Dr. John A. King redefines success for people rebuilding after trauma or military service. He argues that chasing money, status, and relationships often leaves you empty, especially when your capabilities have changed. Real success, he says, is the passionate pursuit of any worthwhile goal.

Be it someone retiring from the military or from law enforcement or being struck with a realization of trauma or a trauma event. Often those things and those times in our lives mean that we need to stop, reflect, and ask ourselves the question for the next stage of our life of what is success. You see, you may not be able to do the things that you were doing before. You may not have those opportunities, or you may not have an inkling, a desire, a passion, or even the ability to do them. So then what is success? If we look around us, it's all tied into relationship, money, and status, but truly those things on a deep personal level don't really bring us satisfaction. I redefined success for myself in the following ways: that success for me was the passionate pursuit of a worthwhile goal. As long as I as a man was actively engaged in something that I thought was valuable and important, then I could see myself as successful.
