Best Skin Care Products

Short video/transcript of Dr. Shervin Naderi explaining the importance of medical-grade skincare alongside plastic surgery. He recommends Dr. Obagi’s ZO line (Zein Obagi/ZO) and outlines a three-step skincare process—prep (mechanical exfoliation), stimulate/chemical exfoliation (collagen stimulation, retinoids/glycolics), and protect (daily defense/sunscreen)—plus optional in-office laser treatments. He emphasizes patient adherence to at-home care for transformative results.

Hi. I want to talk to you about something that most plastic surgeons don't really bring up. Typically, people come to us, facial plastics, plastic surgeons that want rhinoplasty, they want breast augmentation, tummy tuck, want a facelift. They're looking for Botox and fillers and they associate skincare with dermatologists. The problem is most dermatologists, you look at their practice, they're so busy, they're seeing 60, 70, 80 patients a day. They've got a six month wait period. And they see them, they see you for, you know, five, 10 minutes. And typically everybody gives you a product. Maybe it's a trilema prescription, maybe it's some red retinue. Skin care is really important. Whatever I do, whatever Dr. Kulag does, whatever Dr. Andersen does, whatever we do as plastic and facial plastic surgeons, the icing on the cake is the skin. So if I'm putting some Botox and fillers, building cheeks up, creating a beautiful nose, but the skin is being ignored. There's freckles and sunspots and sun damage and rosacea and acne scars. We're missing the point. It's about beauty. It's not about chasing lines. You know that. I don't like to chase little lines. I like to look at the beauty of the face. So skincare, well, we've had multiple different skincare line options in the past. We've had things from Obagi, Neocuta, Skin, Medica, Skinceuticals. You name it, we've had it. And through the last 15 years or so, what really has turned out to be the best product out there, the thing that's really transformed the skin, is Dr. Obagi's newest line, which is zo. Some people call it Zoe, but basically it's Zane Obagi Zo. So what's different about this line? Well, it's two things. It's Obagi's principle of how do you take care of skin? And also the products. The principle is clear. There is no magic answer. There's no one tube, one cream, one ointment. There's nothing like that. You go to Nordstrom, you go to Macy's, you go to Target, you buy a jar, you smell it, you touch it, you feel it, you put it on your face, your girlfriend tells you about it. There's no silver bullet. It's a process. And the process is clear. There's three lines, three tiers to the process. And the first tier is you've got to prep the skin. And Zainabagi is one of the dermatologists. That truly gets amazing results. And so we've adopted a system. We basically preach it to our patients. We see these changes and transformations. So how do you prep the skin? Well, the prepping itself is two to three steps. You do it morning and night. You have to mechanically exfoliate the skin. You're cleansing it, you're scrubbing it and then you're using pads to take the oil off. That gets it physically exfoliated, takes the dead skin off, but also gets it ready for step two. What's step two? Well, step two is stimulating and chemically exfoliating and stimulating collagen production. It's not about a tube of Retin A. Many people have been on Retin A years and years and years. You build resistance. You can't just be using non retina indefinitely. Many people are afraid of step two because that's the step that actually gets the skin to shed off. They're worried about peeling, they're worried about redness. Well, that's how it works. You can't be afraid of redness and peeling and keep the dead skin, the dull skin, the mottled skin on your face. Shed it, let it come out. Two to three months later, you have fantastic skin. So how do we do that? It's multiple steps. It has to be changed. Retin A, retinol glycolics, those are the things that do step two. And then ultimately there's step three. Protected. Whatever you've built now, you got to protect. And that's where things like daily defense and sunscreen come in. So this is an approach. Now you can add lasers. We have lasers, we have erbium laser, we have CO2 laser, we have BBL broadband light, we have acne lasers. We have a variety of options. But the most important thing is what you do at home. If you just rely on going into a spa and getting a chemical peel, well, let's say going to a dentist and saying, I'm not brushing my teeth, I want you to bleach me, doesn't work. You have to do your part at home. And out of all the skincare lines, if you want to transfer the skin, not just cover it, not just moisturize it, not just pack on some moisture on it, but actually transform it. Zio is the way to go. If you want to come in, come in, sit down with me, sit down with my skincare specialist, we'll talk about it. But I don't want you to leave anything on the table. I don't want you to walk out of here with, you know, maybe a nicer nose, maybe some nicer cheeks. But miss the icing on the cake, that's the skin. So I look forward to having that conversation with you.
