Post-op Instructions Gynecomastia

Hi, I'm Dr. Erica Anderson and I'm the body specialist at the Nadiri center. And I wanted to go through the post operative care after gynecomastia or male chest contouring surgery. So if you're looking at this video, you've had your surgery done and you're in your compressive garment that we discussed preoperatively. And what I want to prepare you for is the next couple of days and being home. So, so you have your medications filled and I would tell you that it's uncomfortable for the first couple of days. So during those first few days, make sure you're taking your pain medications as needed. If you feel like you don't need it, then feel free to forego that or even transition to a non steroidal like Aleve, Motrin or Advil. Particularly if you're going back to work right away, some of those drugs are gonna be better for you. You can always use your narcotic at night. If you are taking your narcotic, make sure you're taking a laxative to prevent constipation. Your incisions are covered with brown tape. Typically for the chest contouring surgery, there's only two incisions and they're located lateral on the chest. And again it's covered by the brown tape. And then you'll have a waterproof dressing over top of that and then your compressive garment. So that's typically your Under Armour, that's really tight, or Spanx makes a version, or whatever works under your clothes or that you're most convenient or most comfortable wearing. You can eat what you like. Your activity is completely as tolerated. I have many of my patients that go back to working out the next day or the day after. There are no restrictions on your activity. As long as you're wearing your compressive garment, you can exercise or do really anything that you might want. I would tell you that the chest exercises tend to be a little bit more uncomfortable in the early days or anything over your head, but there really are no restrictions. You can shower, everything's waterproof. So go ahead and take your compressive garment off, take a shower and then resume your compression wear. If you need to take a break from your compression, just do that overnight. So spend your night, you can sleep without your garment on, and then when you wake up in the next morning, be sure to put it right back on. The pain is worst in the first few days, but after that, usually our patients resume their normal activities, are very happy with their contour and their decision to have surgery here with us. The swelling can last up to three months so even though you might see some residual of that swelling that's there rest assured that that will continue to improve over time but hopefully that you're already happy with your your new outcome. The things that I worry about early on is just bleeding and this is a very very rare complication but let's say for example one side of the chest seemed to get much larger than the other in the few first days after after surgery. That's something that I would want to know about and hear about from you so I'd want you to contact the office and if you have any questions follow up from surgery. We'd love to hear from you.
