A clinician explains how Kybella injections can reduce small fat pockets in the armpit area without surgery. The procedure causes temporary swelling and discomfort, typically needs 1 to 3 sessions, and takes days to weeks to recover. It works only for small areas, not as a liposuction replacement.

Good afternoon. Today we're doing some Kybella injection. Kybella is FDA approved for melting the submental fat that a lot of people get to their neck. It has other uses, however. I have many patients who complain to me about the area between their breast and their arm. And in some of the clothes it's accentuated and it bothers them. They have this little fullness that's there. So we've been using Kybella to treat that fullness and it's working very well to give them the contour that they want without the risk of surgery. Kybella is not a replacement for surgery. It's not a replacement for liposuction. It's used for small, localized areas. You see, the area that we're treating here is a very small area. We could not use this to treat the entire abdomen. That's not the way it should be utilized. But in this case where we have a small pocket of fat that we're trying to melt, this is the perfect way to do it. It's a little uncomfortable. We have used topical numbing and we've applied some ice, but it's tolerable. She'll have a couple of days of discomfort and then she'll start noticing over the next several weeks that the fat will be moving from that area. We are now treating the other side. Sometimes people get just one side is worse than the other. So we're treating the other sides now. Similar, again, similar treatment, similar approach. I'd also say that I prepare patients for needing two or three treatments with this product. If it's a very small amount, if it's a very small amount of fatty deposition, then it could potentially be one treatment. But I prepare the patients for two or three treatments depending on their degree of lipodystrophy. But again, this is very well tolerated burns. Some post op Tylenol or Motrin for discomfort. You expect extra swelling initially and then that starts to resolve. This has been Kybella injection for armpit lipodystroph.
