Rhinoplasty Recovery Time

Dr. Shervin Naderi breaks down rhinoplasty recovery: one week of downtime with a cast and bruising, then back to work with limits. Avoid heavy exercise and glasses on your nose for a month. Most swelling fades by then, but your nose keeps refining for 2 to 5 years.

Good morning. The other question that often comes up is rhinoplasty recovery time. What's the downtime of rhinoplasty? How much time do I need to recover? That's really a complicated question, and it's best answered with a complicated answer. There's multiple stages. The first week patients often wear a small cast or a small piece of tape on the nose and they'll have some bruising and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, lips and forehead. And they usually want to hide out. Not always. Some patients don't care and they go to work, they go to school, they go out, some cultures, depending on the Middle east or California, Miami, certain places, they actually wear this cast with pride as a status of, hey, look at me, I had a rhinoplasty. But most of the time, especially in the Washington, D.C. area, people hide out for the week and that's their downtime. They take a week off from work. The cast comes off after a week. The nose looks very nice, it's improved, but it's nowhere close to being done. It truly is never done. It's going to continue healing and changing for many years and decades to come. But at the one week point, most patients can put some makeup or most patients can actually just go back to work and school and regular activities with a few limitations. I ask my patients to avoid the gym for about a month. So there's no exercise for about a month, but they can certainly go for walks and strolls without any issues. If there is minimal to mild bruising, it's not a big deal. More severe bruising requires some makeup coverage. I tell patients that at the one month point, they really can't tell with the naked eye that there's any swelling. So the downtime truly is about a week to a month max. But the next month, the following month, three months, six months, a year, two years, three years, four years, five years, shrink wrapping takes place, scar tissue starts to dissolve and the nose continues to refine, get smaller. The things you read online about one year being the final result, it's absolutely not true. At two to three to four to five years, the nose continues to shrink. Wrapping get a little bit more defined and refined and smaller. This can be a good thing. It can also bring up some subtle irregularities in edges of cartilage and bone as such due to healing. But overall, the nose will continue to change. For most patients though, one week of downtime, one week of staying low, staying out of the public's eye, and then going back to normal activities with the exception of gym and usually no glasses on the nose for about a month as well. That's essentially it. You enjoy the nose. You start enjoying the benefits of the changes you've undergone, and then you allow the rest of the changes to take place over time. I tell my patients, don't sit there staring at your watch, enjoy the nose. It's going to continue changing. Enjoy it and know that it's going to continue to get smaller over many years to come. That's essentially the recovery or downtime of rhinoplasty.
