Dr. Tabatha Barber proposes a 40-day alcohol-free experiment designed to reveal why you drink. Each slip becomes a learning moment: you might discover you drink when lonely, stressed, or seeking connection. The break also reduces inflammation and lets your prefrontal cortex re-engage for clearer thinking.

'What if I can't do this?' And as much as it's a 40-day fast, I'm like, gals, this is actually a, not about alcohol. I'm obviously in the Bible, every time it's mentioned it's, um, a time of testing. And also, I, I wanted it to feel doable, right? I wanted it to feel like this is a, a self-compassion-led experiment where you get to try to do this for 40 days and see what happens. And, um, I like to say it's a no-fail plan because if you do have a drink after 5 or 6 days or whatever it is, keep going because the book, the book is written so that you can learn from those, what I call growth points. Why did you drink that night? Is it because you were lonely? Is it because, you know, you thought you deserve something? Did you need a break? Did you— were you looking for connection? And so we can learn why we're going to alcohol while kind of going on this 40-day experiment.
I just love that you're, you're teaching it as a lifestyle but it, it's okay, like, to fail is basically what you're saying. Like, it's okay that you had that drink because now you're going to figure out why you had it. Because if you're just drinking every day, sometimes it's hard to get to the why.
Because it's decreasing your inflammation in your body, it's awakening up your brain, you're getting back into that prefrontal cortex where you can actually have some critical thinking and you're not stuck in survival mode, right? Like, everything starts to shift and you're functioning the way you were designed to function.
