Dr. Tabatha Barber explains clean fasting: only water, black coffee, or plain tea during the fast. Avoid anything sweet or flavored, even zero-calorie options, because they trigger the cephalic phase insulin response and spike insulin. The term was coined in her Facebook community around 2017.

Break down the clean fast for people. Okay. That's your jam, right? Well, yeah, the clean fast is. Came from me. You know, the wording of the clean fast. We. We created that wording in somewhere in 2017 in my Facebook community. We wanted a way to differentiate. We're like, no, you need to fast with just plain water, plain black coffee, plain tea, plain sparkling water. We don't want any kind of sweet flavors. Even if there's zero calorie. We don't want any food flavors. You know, the goal is keeping insulin low. We want to avoid the cephalic phase insulin response. So we were like, no, we want to fast clean. And then we just started using the phrase fast clean, and it stuck. And it's really kind of funny because every time, you know, somebody now says dirty fast, I know you've probably seen that in the fasting community. That's the unintended consequence. I don't like that wording at all, because I believe you're either fasting clean or you're not really fasting.
