A YouTube interview/transcript excerpt featuring Dr. Achina Stein describing her turn to functional medicine and faith-informed psychiatry after personal crises: her son’s acute suicidal episode during puberty and her own history of depression from childhood trauma. The piece frames these experiences as motivating a shift away from conventional medical approaches toward more holistic, root-cause-focused care.

Thankfully, we've been led to a place where we have blinders off and not seeing the usual ways of. And it's hard. It's hard to remember being that way. But I mean, we. We have the same thought processes. And I think people who become functional medicine doctors usually have something happen in their own lives or someone close to them that suffers so much that the medical system fails them and. And then they have to find a way. And that was the case for me when my son became very ill when he hit puberty and he was acutely suicidal overnight and standing on a fifth floor ready to jump from the ledge. And so that was shocking to me because here I am a psychiatrist and his mother, and I did not see it at all. And when I look back on it, there were so many things that I had no idea that they were root causes. I learned. I learned through his experience and then ultimately my own. I myself had depression from living through a traumatic lifestyle in my family growing up. And I also remember that day when I was praying, looking out the window and praying to God, asking for help and getting me out of the situation that I was in, that I had no control over.
