Short YouTube video segment (by Dr. Tabatha Barber) explaining that autophagy is the body’s natural cellular recycling process which removes intracellular waste by using it as fuel; autophagy typically requires a period of not eating, so frequent eating in modern society limits this cleaning process.

Tell me what you think about fasting, where fasting comes in with this really. Is this the fact that once again our bodies are continuing, we're continually eating here in our society. And what happens when you continually eat is that your body, your cells can fill up with intracellular waste. And as just the fact that we're getting older, the fact that our body is alive, our cells can fill up with this intracellular waste. But the amazing thing is our body has a recycling process where it can get rid of this waste naturally by using it as fuel. And that's called autophagy. But the key with autophagy and the reason why we don't see it as much in our society today is because you have to stop eating for a while for that to happen. But the idea is that your body has to stop getting all this fuel provided to it and then allow it to allow this process to occur to essentially clean out your cells from the inside out.
