Dr. Thomas J. Powell identifies three reasons fundraising stalls: your story doesn't match what investors want to hear, you're pitching the wrong type of investor, or your data room has gaps and contradictions. Timing can also kill a deal even when everything else lines up.

Well, heading off to D.C. and the team was asking me about what happens when capital raising stalls and with the shutdown of the government, it definitely makes me think of that because capital comes from all sorts of places. First, if you're raising private capital or looking at institutional capital, it is generally that something has gone wrong and there's a disconnect between the story and the investors. The second thing is usually tied to a misalignment with the actual investors that are being targeted. So if the right investors have been targeted and you have the right story and those investors are aligning with it, then it may only simply be a timing issue. And then the third is one that is oftentimes left behind, which is the misalignment in the data in the data room. We've talked about how important that data room is. It's not that it needs to be a perfect data room of all the details. It needs to be complete and it can't have conflicting information. So if you'd like to learn more, join us here at the Founders Office, Founders Stash Office. You can run your deck through it and get feedback immediately. We're also doing an event up in Lake Tahoe at the end of the month and we'd love to have you join us. Have a great day.
