Anthropic is buying its own TPUs from Google and Trainium chips from AWS to avoid getting deprioritized in cloud queues behind competitors like OpenAI. The company sees securing dedicated compute capacity as essential for scaling its models without getting stuck waiting for resources.

Anthropic is trying to lock down all compute sources because if OpenAI shows up, they're going to be at the back of the queue. And so by becoming a first-party citizen in TPU and becoming a first-party citizen at Trainium, as well as getting GPUs via indirect parties from other hyperscalers, Anthropic can have the compute it needs to scale because that's something they have a big disadvantage at.
