Anthropic's focus on perfecting Claude's command-line interface may be a dead-end, one panelist argues, while OpenAI is building toward an app-centric platform with voice and multimodal features. The debate touches on whether apps or CLIs represent the future of AI agents, and whether hardware and operating systems will matter at all.

Anthropic with Claude Code, they, they did well with the CLI. And so they just kept making the CLI experience amazing. But the CLI experience is not the end-all be-all of agent orchestration. And therefore they've really cooked themselves into sort of like an innovator's dilemma where they keep making the CLI better. But OpenAI, they have the, they have the true vision of where, what the true agent orchestration platform of the future is, where you'll be able to integrate voice and you'll be able to integrate, you know, multimodality and you'll be able to integrate all these other things into the app. And the app is so much better than the CLI. And the real point where you should develop, uh, and, and, and users should be using it in the use case should be on the app, not on the CLI, because the CLI is a dead end. Uh, and it is a foregone relic of H1-26 and H2-25.
Do you mean the, the, the app forever, or do you mean their device? Because they're, they're talking about releasing a consumer device next year too. You think that's bunk? Yeah.
I have a question then. Why does the Codex app suck? Yeah, I was going to say. So, so, so like, look, look, look.
Long-term planning, long-term planning.
Dylan, I think you— Mao Zedong had to do the Great Leap Forward, okay? Dylan, in my opinion, I think you are thinking too small because in the perfect true maxi world, the operating system doesn't need to exist.
