Google's top TPU engineers have left, delaying TPUv8 development. The chip faces tough competition from Nvidia's Rubin accelerator, which Nvidia claims outperforms it. In AI hardware, being significantly better than rivals directly translates to higher profits.
Google's, a lot of their best TPU engineers have left. And so that what that's done is, you know, chip timelines are so long that didn't affect TPUv7. That's affecting TPUv8. At the same time, Google's trying to diversify their supply chain, get from not just Broadcom, but also MediaTek. And so Google's got a real challenge on TPUv8 in that it's good, it's an improvement. But then when you go look at what Nvidia's doing with Rubin, Rubin is so much better because Nvidia's just pedal to the floor. We have to be the best and we have to be way, way, way better than everything because how much better I am than everyone else is my margin.
