Eduardo Briceño: How to get better at the things you care about | TED

In this TED Talk, Eduardo Briceño explains why many people stagnate despite hard work and offers a framework to break that cycle. He distinguishes two complementary states: the learning zone, where the goal is improvement through deliberate practice, and the performance zone, where the goal is optimal execution of mastered skills. Briceño illustrates the learning zone with historical (Demosthenes) and contemporary (Beyoncé) examples, describing how deliberate practice—breaking skills into sub‑components, seeking high‑challenge tasks, obtaining frequent feedback, and using coaches—drives growth. He shows that most people spend too much time in the performance zone, especially in high‑stakes environments like schools and workplaces, which suppresses learning. To shift the balance, he recommends cultivating a growth mindset, identifying purposeful skills to improve, designing low‑stakes practice spaces, reflecting after performance, and lowering stakes for others by modeling vulnerability and feedback‑seeking. The talk concludes with a call to alternate intentionally between zones, creating “low‑stakes islands” that enable continuous, never‑ending improvement.
