A short YouTube monologue by David Ghiyam (uploaded by Elay Amitay Halevi) explaining a Kabbalah-based view: souls preselect life circumstances (parents, partners, events) to awaken inner 'baggage' needing transformation. Relationships and painful experiences are presented as prechosen opportunities; free will occurs during moments of pain when one can choose to shift to a higher or lower destiny.

Your soul knows that in order to receive all the goodness it wants in its life, your soulmate prosperity, like peace of mind, all of these energies to come to you, you have to transform or begin the transformation process of this baggage. In order for this to happen, the soul chooses parents that are going to be best to help show and awaken what the baggage is. So it's interesting, you might pick avoidant parents, you might pick parents that will one day get divorced. Some dynamic to help awaken the negativity that's inside the soul that needs to be transformed. It's not that the parents caused the negativity by abandoning you. It's that they were the force and agent to awaken it. Your soul chose that prior to coming. The girl you dated in high school, that boyfriend you have in college, and the ones that hurt you, the ones that abused you, the ones that loved you, all of them were pre chosen by the soul in order to create the perfect reality that you need to transform. And that's where the free will comes in. Free will doesn't come in necessarily. The people you meet, a lot of those are already pre written. Free will comes at the moment of pain, the moment of discomfort, lack and pain. That's when we have the free will to shift to a higher destiny or a lower destiny, which is already pre written as well. But each destiny that you shift higher is better. And each destiny shift lower is a little bit more chaotic and empty. So that's where the free will comes in. So those are, Cabala explains.
