Episode 15 — The Turning Point of Transformation | Awakening the Spiritual Mind

In this episode of Awakening the Spiritual Mind, host Elizabeth Carrio guides listeners from the conclusion of Part 3 of her book—focused on integration and the Alchemist’s Path—into the opening of Part 4, “Return with Fire.” The discussion reframes the ego not as an enemy but as a compass that, when held with compassionate awareness, allows trapped energy to be reclaimed and redirected toward creative, intentional living. Emphasis is placed on the role of attention in directing energy, the importance of pausing to notice patterns, and the practice of tending the inner “fire” rather than extinguishing it. Carrie then introduces Part 4, describing transformation as a conscious re‑entry into the world where inner alignment becomes visible through ethical responsibility, spiritual intelligence, and embodied action. Fire is portrayed as functional clarity that illuminates choices, fuels presence, and contributes to a collective “quiet revolution.” Listeners are invited to journal on three prompts about their inner vitality, invitations to return reshaped, and how their fire can clarify decisions. The episode sets the stage for future exploration of how spiritual intelligence guides outer impact.

Welcome back to Awakening the Spiritual Mind. My name is Elizabeth Carrio, your host. If you have been following the journey so far, you know that part 3 has been all about integration, moving from insight to embodiment, from knowing into being. I'd like to begin by reading the closing passage of part 3 of the book.
Conclusion. Step 2: The Alchemist's Path. True transformation does not begin with a war against the ego. It begins with understanding, an attitude of curiosity, patience, and presence. The goal is not to eliminate your patterns but to hold them in compassionate awareness long enough for something new to emerge, something truer, Quieter and deeper. This is the essence of inner alchemy— choosing presence over impulse, reclaiming energy once trapped in old loops, and making conscious choices instead of reacting automatically. As you continue this journey, remember, the ego is not your enemy, the nervous system is not your obstacle— it is your compass— and energy always follows attention. That is why it matters where and how you place your attention. Let this chapter serve as a threshold, an invitation to step out of autopilot and into conscious intention. It is a call to lead from presence rather than protection, and to redirect the energy once bound in survival strategies toward creative, intentional living. You are not here to suppress your emotions. You are here to understand what your body already knows. You are here to become an active collaborator in your own unfolding rather than a passive puppet of outdated psychological programs. Yet this transformation is not meant to remain confined to your inner world. In the next part, we will explore how internal alignment leads to external action, how presence matures into ethical responsibility. And how inner freedom translates into outer impact. Because integration does not happen in isolation. It takes root in relationship, in engagement, and in participation with the world around you. You do not awaken for your own sake alone. You awaken in order to act differently, to respond more wisely, and to bring coherence between your inner truth and your outer life. We do not merely liberate ourselves. We begin to move through the world with integrity, listening more deeply, loving more courageously, and serving more consciously. And that too is part of the path.
What this passage reminds us is simple but radical: the ego is not the enemy. Think of your inner work up to now as tending a fire. At first, you only notice the smoke— the stress, the reactions, the beliefs that keep looping. And then you start to see the flames— your patterns, your nervous system, your protective ego. The temptation is to try to extinguish it all. But transformation is not about putting the fire out. It's about learning to tend it. When you hold your patterns with compassion, you start to reclaim energy that was once trapped in defense. You redirect it into creativity, into presence, and conscious action. This is the alchemist's path. Instead of pushing emotions away, you listen to what they are pointing to. Instead of seeing your nervous system as fragile, you recognized it as your compass. Instead of judging your ego for showing up, you notice what it is protecting, and you thank it before gently choosing another response. Pause for a moment and think of one situation this week Where you reacted quickly, maybe defensively, maybe with people pleasing, maybe by shutting down. What would have shifted if you had taken just one extra breath, one extra moment to say, I notice this is happening and I still get to choose? That pause, That's the beginning of alchemy. Let's now step into the next movement of the journey, part 4, Return with Fire.
Part 4, Return with Fire. You have descended into yourself. You have walked the terrain of your inner world, traced the contours of your beliefs, Confronted old wounds, and reclaimed hidden wisdom. You have met the alchemist within. But your journey did not stop there. In the previous part, we also looked outward, at the structures that shape human experience, the collective stories we inherit, and the cultural cycles that define our times. You began to see not only who you are, but where you are, as a soul embedded in a larger field of meaning. Transformation, after all, is not only personal, it is contextual. And the deeper your inner clarity, the more sharply you perceive the outer world and your role within it. Now the time has come to return, not as the person you were, but as someone reshaped by fire. Clearer, deeper, alight with meaning. This is not a retreat from the world. It is a re-entry, a conscious return to complexity with presence, a decision to bring what you have touched in silence into the movement of daily life, to act without collapsing, to choose without repeating, to speak, to serve, to create without betraying your truth. You do not need to become a healer, a guide, or a public figure to live with purpose. You only need to live in alignment with your values, your voice, and your vision. I call this part Return with Fire because true transformation is not complete until it becomes visible. The fire you carry now is not decorative; it is functional. It clarifies your path. It illuminates your choices. It warms the spaces you enter. It burns away illusion and calls forth right action. And this fire matters beyond your personal evolution. Because every act of integrity, every step taken in coherence, is part of something larger— a reawakening of soul in a fragmented world. A quiet revolution, one conscious life at a time. In the chapters ahead, we will explore How to cultivate and embody spiritual intelligence, the capacity to live from soul in the midst of ordinary life. Align your mind, heart, and body into coherent presence. Lead, relate, and create from your essence, not from fear, habit, or performance. Honor the sacred without leaving the ground. We will also draw on insights from transpersonal psychology, a field that bridges inner and outer, personal and collective, psychological and spiritual. Because integration is not measured in insight, it is measured in embodiment, in how you speak, how you decide, how you hold complexity, in your ability to move through the world with your fire. And not get burned. Let us begin. The path continues, this time with your inner flame lighting the way.
What does it really mean to return with fire? It means you don't stay forever in introspection. You don't linger endlessly in analysis or healing work. At some point, The insights you have gathered inside have to move outward into words, choices, and embodied presence. Integration is not complete until it becomes visible, until it shapes how you speak to your partner, how you handle conflict at work, how you care for your body, how you show up in your community. Maybe that looks like saying no when your own belief loop would have made you say yes, even if your voice shakes. Maybe it means choosing silence before replying to a critical email, giving yourself the dignity of one more breath before reacting. Maybe it shows up as bringing a little more empathy into a difficult conversation, Or moving through your day with more awareness of your body, your breath, and your presence. Fire here is not aggression. It is not about intensity for its own sake. Fire is clarity. It's coherence. It's the light that burns away illusion and leaves only what matters. Fire doesn't need to shout to be powerful. It simply radiates. And here's the paradox: this fire is deeply personal. It is your unique flame. And yet, it's never only about you. Every time you act from inner alignment rather than old conditioning, you add one more spark to a large fire, a fire of integrity, a fire of awakening. Think of it this way: Your presence changes the atmosphere around you. The way you walk into a room, the tone of your voice, the quality of your listening— these are not small things. They create ripples, and those ripples become part of the collective field. So to return with fire is to understand that your inner work is not Private treasure you keep hidden. It's a gift you carry back into the world, a quiet revolution that unfolds not through grand gestures but through consistent, soul-led actions, one conscious choice at a time. That's why part 4 of his journey takes us directly into the world. It asks, how does your fire move? How do you embody it in your relationships, your leadership, your creativity, or your service? How do you keep your inner flame alive when the world around you pulls you back into distraction or fear? Because in the end, awakening is not about retreating from life. It is about re-entering life differently. With more integrity, with more presence, and with your fire intact. So now, in your awakening journal, take a few moments to write: What inside feels more alive in me? Where in my life am I being invited to return, not as I was, but as someone reshaped by presence? How might Might inner fire clarify even one decision this week? Take some time to answer to these 3 questions. In the next episode, we step into the art of learning how spiritual intelligence guides not only inner alignment but outer impact. Until next time, carry your fire with you. Thank you for listening to Awakening the Spiritual Mind.
