Why YOUR trading objectives are so critical to your stock trading success

A short YouTube talk by Adrian Reid arguing that traders should design trading systems to match their personal freedom and life objectives. Reid recounts his experience achieving location- and time-freedom by using systems that require only 20–30 minutes/day, and promotes the Trader Success System as a framework to build a portfolio of strategies aligned with one’s desired lifestyle and personality.

So, Adrian here again from enlightened stock Trading. Let me ask you this. What does freedom mean to you? What would your life be like? How would you feel if you could be totally free?
Now, the reason a lot of people get into trading is to achieve that freedom. And right now I'm cruising around the island of Kauai on a boat. We're going snorkeling. We just saw a bunch of dolphins and a bunch of sea turtles and cruising around like this in the middle of the week without worrying about money, without worrying about getting to work, without worrying about how much annual leave I've got. To me, that's freedom. Now, I can sort of show you a little bit around where I'm at the captain's up there. And this is just the most amazing day ever. And this is what freedom is all about for me. And what's interesting is a lot of people get into trading to try and get that freedom, and yet the vast majority of traders are trading in a way that does not allow them to be free. I mean, there's a couple of things that you need in order to be free. What are they? Well, the first thing is you need a profitable method. You need to be able to make money. And the second thing you need is you need the confidence in your system, the confidence to follow it. But the third thing is probably more subtle and most people miss it. The third thing that you need to do is you need to design your trading method to give you the type of freedom, the type of life that you actually want. Now, if you want to sit in front of the computer all day with your six or nine monitors, staring at tick charts, moving up and down, making your trading decisions in a really high stress sort of way, that's great if that is actually what you want. But for me, that is not what freedom is about. And that is not why I got into trading. I got into trading to be absolutely free. Free in terms of my time, free in terms of my location, where I had to be, and free in terms of my mindset, free of stress, free of worry about what's going to happen. And so when I design my trading strategies for me, for my own portfolio, for my money, I always design them with those objectives in mind. And a lot of traders sit down and the first question they ask is, what system should I use? Or what indicator is profitable? But that's a really poor place to start, because if you start with that, chances are you're going to end up with a trading strategy that doesn't fit the sort of life that you want. So when I first designed my trading systems 15 years ago, I designed them with a very specific objective in mind. And it wasn't about freedom, it was about time. Now, I designed my trading systems because I was working really, really hard, really long hours, and traveling a lot. And so my main objective was to design systems that I had the time to follow. And so that meant 20, 30 minutes a day, maximum. That's all I could do. And I didn't have the time or the ability to look at my trades during the day. I could basically place my orders at the open, and that's it. And so that's how I designed my trading systems. Now, what's interesting is that turned out really for me because when I left the corporate world in 2012, in 2012, I made more money trading 20, 30 minutes a day than I did working 14 hours a day in my day job. And so I left the corporate world. But that was the point where I really got freedom in life. And at that point, I really didn't see any reason to change the way I was trading because my trading was giving me the freedom that I now wanted. 20 to 30 minutes a day, that's all it was taking. And yet I see all of these traders who are using short term systems, day trading, trading five, ten times a day, monitoring their positions during the day, because that's what their rules require them to do. So what I want to do here is challenge you to think more deeply about your trading objectives and design your trading strategy, your portfolio of trading systems to fit those objectives and give you the life of freedom that you want. Because traders, let's face it, get into trading for freedom, and yet most don't consciously design their trading system portfolio that way. And that's exactly what what the Trader Success System is all about. Designing a portfolio of trading systems that's profitable, that gives you the life that you want, that fits your objectives, and make sure it fits your personality so that it's comfortable and easy for you to trade consistently and profitably.
