6 Weird Signs You're Burning Visceral Belly Fat

In this 8‑minute YouTube video, fitness coach Eric Roberts draws on his experience with over 25,000 clients to explain six often‑overlooked indicators that the body is shedding visceral belly fat. He begins by describing how a calorie deficit first targets visceral fat, which sits atop the organs and makes the abdomen feel hard like a "basketball." As this fat disappears, the stomach becomes softer and easier to pinch, a sign that sub‑cutaneous fat is now being mobilized. He then links visceral‑fat loss to improved insulin sensitivity, which steadies blood‑sugar levels, eliminates the typical 3 PM energy crash, and curbs intense cravings for sweets and junk food. The reduction in intra‑abdominal pressure also eases acid reflux, heartburn, and overall digestion. A less‑pressured diaphragm leads to deeper breathing, less snoring, and a lower risk of sleep‑apnea, which can be observed by a partner. Finally, Roberts warns viewers not to rely solely on the scale: visceral fat burns faster than sub‑cutaneous fat, so waist measurements, tighter clothing, and progress photos are more reliable markers of success. Throughout, he offers a free calorie‑deficit calculator, promotes an 8‑week paid coaching challenge, and cross‑references a separate video on simultaneous fat loss and muscle gain. The video’s purpose is both educational—clarifying physiological cues of visceral‑fat loss—and promotional, encouraging viewers to enroll in his coaching program for structured accountability.

You're burning visceral belly fat more than you realize. After coaching over 25,000 clients with their fat loss transformation, I've learned 6 weird signs that show up when your body is burning visceral fat. And if you don't know them, you will get discouraged and quit when the entire time you were making progress and you just needed to keep going. Sign number 1 is what messes with most people's heads because you think it's a bad thing, but it's actually the best sign that your visceral belly fat is leaving. When you first start losing weight, your stomach was probably like a basketball. It was hard, it was firm, it was almost like pumped out. This happens because visceral belly fat Sits on top of your organs and pushes out against your stomach. But when you're in a calorie deficit, your body tends to first pull from your visceral belly fat. What does this do? It takes that pumped-up basketball and deflates it, making your stomach go from hard and firm to soft and squishy. You can pinch it easier. It almost feels like loose skin. And it means your visceral belly fat is leaving, and that pinchy fat is called your subcutaneous fat. It's the fat that sits between your skin. If this is happening, do not panic. This is a good thing because over time, as long as you're in a calorie deficit, this subcutaneous fat will get burned too. But it comes after you burn the visceral belly fat. And by the way, if you need to know what your calorie deficit deficit is per day, I have a free calorie calculator. You can click the link in the description of the video below. Now, sign number 2 is something that happens when you're a few weeks in. Most people who have excess visceral belly fat struggle with low energy levels. Why is this? Well, visceral belly fat drains straight into your liver, and this drives something called insulin resistant. What is insulin resistance? Well, your body has a key that allows sugar to get into your cells. When that key stops working so well, sugar then piles up in your blood, and this causes your blood sugar to spike and crash. And this is what causes you to have an energy crash around 3 PM. But when your body is burning the visceral belly fat, your As your insulin sensitivity improves, that key now fits perfectly into your cells and your blood sugar levels are steadier. This means your energy levels are more steadier and consistent throughout the day. So no more 3 PM crashes. So even if the number on the scale isn't showing it yet, or if you can't see a big change in your body yet, this is a sign internally that you're burning visceral belly fat. Now, there's something else that happens as a result of improved insulin sensitivity, and it's a major sign that your belly fat is getting decreased. Whenever I talk to clients who sign up for my online coaching program and I ask them, what's your biggest struggle with food? 3 out of 4 people will say sweets. I just crave junk food and sweets, Eric. And I get it 'cause I'm a sweets guy myself. But there's a reason you crave sweets so much. And it's not your discipline or your willpower. Having a high amount of visceral belly fat is like having a toddler. They require more attention and sometimes they create urgent needs. When you have a lot of visceral belly fat, we just learned that your blood sugar would rise and fall quickly. So when your blood sugar drops quickly, your body sends signals that you need sugar now. And what is quick sources of sugar? Well, candy, sweets, junk food. So your body will crave that. But when you lose visceral belly fat, it's like that toddler growing up into an adult. You still have to manage them, but there's less urgent needs. They are more controlled. And it's the same with losing visceral belly fat. Your blood sugar is controlled and you stop having these urgent, high-craving needs for sweets and junk food, which is a clear sign. Even if you feel like nothing is happening, you're getting rid of your visceral belly fat and you need to keep going. But this next sign is something you might be experiencing, and it's going to make your life a hell of a lot better. When people have a lot of visceral belly fat. It creates a lot of pressure inside of their belly. What does this do? Well, think about it like if you were to stand up in a sauna. If you're in a hot sauna, what happens if you stand up? The heat is more intense because heat rises. One of the main things I learned from school— I didn't listen much, but that's what I learned. And when you stand up, you can almost feel the pressure the higher up it goes. It's almost like harder to breathe. And that's what visceral belly fat does inside side of your stomach. Because remember, we said it's hard and it sits on top of your organ, so it raises pressure up and it also pushes stomach acid up. What does this lead to? Increased acid reflux and heartburn. So if you're losing visceral belly fat, you may be experiencing less acid reflux, heartburn, and improved digestion. Sure, making dietary changes may also help this, But the less visceral fat, the less pressure there is, and you will feel less discomfort after eating. And now this next sign you personally may or may not be able to notice, but somebody else absolutely is. So we just learned that visceral belly fat pushes up pressure in your stomach, but that doesn't just affect your digestive system. This also affects your lungs and your diaphragm. Think of it like putting a heavy fur coat on top of your car engine when it's running. It still might run, but there's going to be added pressure on it, and it may start to make some funny noises and cause issues. And this is what happens to your lungs and your diaphragm with a high amount of visceral belly fat. It pushes up on your diaphragm and it shrinks your lung volume, especially when you're lying down, which Which could lead to snoring and sleep apnea. Plus, if you have extra fat around your neck as well, this could also make it more challenging. Now, losing weight in general will help with this, but losing visceral belly fat specifically will help your lungs and your diaphragm breathe easier, like taking the fur coat off of the engine. So if your partner or partners are noticing you're snoring less, this is a sign that your visceral belly fat is shrinking. And this next sign is what messes with most people's heads, and it causes most people to get discouraged and quit. And I really don't want that to be you. When you're losing weight, what's the first thing you want to see? That damn scale go down. And I get it, but this is the biggest trap that you can fall into. And if you don't understand why, it will sabotage your entire fat loss journey. Visceral belly fat is more metabolically active than your subcutaneous fat. Remember, the subcutaneous fat is the fat under your skin. And you can just think of this like snow on a highway versus snow in a parking lot. When it snows, the snow on the main highways get plowed first and you can use the highway. But the snow in a parking lot, what happens? It will get plowed, but then just put into this one big pile in the corner or the middle sometimes for some reason. of a parking lot. So the snow on the highway goes first and that big snowbank goes last. It might not have snowed for 2 weeks, but that huge snowbank is still there. In a calorie deficit, visceral belly fat will come off first and faster, like the snow on the highway. But your other subcutaneous fat, not just in your belly but your entire body, usually comes off after that. And especially if you're lifting weights and building muscle, what does this result in? Well, it results in the scale not going down a ton at first, but your waist measurement might be shrinking, your stomach might be coming closer into your body, your jeans and your pants might be fitting better without the number on the scale going down that much. This does not mean you're doing anything wrong. In fact, it means you're doing everything right. And for our online coaching clients, More so than their weight. We look at their waist measurement and their progress pictures. If those 2 things are showing positive change, we're so less worried about the number on the scale because we know they're on the right track. So, if any of these are happening to you, you are on the right track.
