7 Strange Signs You're About to Lose Belly Fat

In this 7‑minute coaching video, fitness expert Eric Roberts shares the seven physiological signals that appear when a person is on the verge of losing belly fat. Drawing on his experience with over 25,000 clients, he explains each sign, the underlying biology, and why it should be interpreted as a positive indicator rather than a problem. The signs are: (1) a sudden increase in urination caused by water released from fat cells; (2) a flabbier feel in the abdomen as fat cells deflate before shrinking; (3) feeling unusually cold because the body lowers its core temperature and loses insulating fat; (4) early fat loss in peripheral areas such as hands, feet, and head due to better blood flow; (5) a leaner face appearing before the stomach because facial skin is thin and vascular; (6) a drop in non‑exercise activity (NEAT) that feels like laziness, reflecting the body’s conservation mode; and (7) a metallic or “raunchy” breath, indicating that most fat is expelled as carbon dioxide. Throughout, Roberts uses analogies (water balloons, grapes, house insulation, balloons, pizza, phone battery, fireplace) and cites client examples (James, Holly) to illustrate each point. He concludes with a call to action, offering a free calorie calculator, online coaching services, and a link to a related video on how long belly‑fat loss takes.

You're about to lose your belly fat sooner than you think. After coaching over 25,000 clients, I've noticed 7 weird signs that show up right before your belly fat disappears. If you don't know them and you miss them, you'll quit 3 weeks before it actually happens. So here's all 7. Sign number 1 is what most people brush off because it feels random, but it's actually the first thing that happens When body fat is leaving your body, you'll be in a calorie deficit for 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and out of nowhere, you just start peeing constantly. 5, 6, 7 times a day, getting up twice a night to go pee. And you think it's something wrong with your bladder. Maybe you're drinking too much coffee, too much water. But here's what's actually happening. Fat cells aren't just fat. They're tiny water tanks. Because every fat cell stores water along with the fat. So when your body burns the fat out of that cell, the water has nowhere to go. So eventually it'll dump into your bloodstream and then out through your bladder. Think of your fat cell like a water balloon. When they're full, the water is locked inside. But the second you poke a hole, the water comes pouring out. And that is the peeing. That's water that's leaving the fat cell that just And this happened to one of our online coaching clients, James, who, as you can tell, has lost a ton of his belly fat. So if you find yourself peeing more than normal in your calorie deficit, don't change a thing. It's not a bad thing. And that's one of the first signs you're on the right track to losing your belly fat. But the second sign, it's even stranger because right after the excess peeing starts to kick in, your fat is going to feel different. And this is where most people panic. Maybe you're a month or two into your calorie deficit, and the scale might be moving, but you grab your stomach and it feels more flabby than before. And so your brain goes, "Wait, am I getting worse? Am I actually gaining fat, not losing it?" Before you freak out, this connects back to sign number one because when your fat cells release the water, the cells don't just disappear; they deflate first. Think of the empty. Water balloon. It's still there, it's just floppy. That's what you're feeling. You can think of it like a grape turning into a raisin. The grape is plump and firm before it shrinks down into a raisin. It gets soft and wrinkled first. The water has to leave before the fruit gets smaller. Your fat cells do the exact same thing. If it's plump and firmed, That means the fat is locked in. If it's soft and squishy, that means the water is gone. And this happens to almost all of the clients that we coach who are focused on losing their belly fat. And softer fat isn't worse fat, it's emptier fat. So you don't need to panic or freak out when your belly feels weird. That is the fat cell deflating before it disappears. And now sign 3 is one that almost nobody connects to fat loss. But once I explain it, you're gonna realize it's been happening to you for weeks. And this is when you used to be fine chilling indoors with a tank top, a t-shirt, and now all of a sudden you're cold as shit. And you might blame your age, the weather, your thyroid, lack of sleep, whatever it is. But what's actually happening is 2 things at once. One, your body is in a calorie deficit, which by the way, you've heard me say this calorie deficit. If you need to know how many calories you should be eating per day to lose fat, there'll be a free calorie calculator in the link below of this video that you can use. When you're in the calorie deficit, your body lowers its internal body temperature to try and save calorie burn for the day. And second, when fat is leaving your body, you are losing your body's insulation. So the inside of your body is running cooler and the outside is getting in easier. Think of your body like a house in the winter. If you turn the thermostat down to save money on heating and you ripped out some of the insulation in the walls, of course you would be cold. The heat is lower and the cold is getting in easier. And this was happening to our client Holly in just her first few weeks of coaching. You can see her body fat in her stomach was going down rapidly, and she was like, I'm cold all the time, and we told her that's a sign your body is in a calorie deficit. So if this is happening to you, it's actually a good sign, not a problem. But sign number 4 is when fat loss starts showing up in places that you didn't even realize. Most people will stand in the mirror and check one place, your stomach, even if other parts of your body are changing. You don't realize it because you glance down, your stomach looks the same, and you assume the plan isn't working. And what you don't know is your hands, your feet, your head all have small fat stores, and those fat stores have way easier and better blood flow than your belly fat. Better blood flow means easier access for your body to burn fat. So your body picks The easier parts first. So your fingers, your feet, your head will lose fat before your belly. Think of it like one of those long inflatable animal balloons. When you let the air out of those balloons, the skinny ends will deflate first and the fat middle part will hold its shape the longest. Your belly is the middle. This is not random. This is physics. And so if you notice your rings are fitting looser, your hats are fitting different, your shoes are fitting looser, maybe even you start to notice your toes are starting to hurt because now they're kind of rubbing up against the shoe a bit differently. That's a sign your belly is on the way next. It's just the order that which this happens is frustrating. Which leads us straight into sign number 5. And this one kind of makes people angry. Because what will happen is you'll start to look leaner, people are going to start giving you compliments. But there's just one problem: your face is getting tighter, you're noticing your jawline a bit more. When people see you in regular clothes, they tell you you're looking different. And so you're kind of thanking people for the compliments, and you kind of feel better. But again, when you take your shirt off and look in the mirror, you still see this belly. And that's because your face also has thin skin and better blood flow, so even a small amount of fat loss there can show up pretty drastically. Your belly has thicker skin and worse blood flow, so the same amount of fat loss might barely visually register. Think of it like a thin crust pizza versus a deep dish pizza. If you take one bite out of the thin crust pizza, it looks like the thing is almost gone. Whereas if you take a bite out of the deep dish pizza, it still looks like holy shit, there's a lot of pizza left here. Your face is the thin crust, your belly is the deep dish. So if your face is leaning out before your stomach starts to change, don't freak out, don't get upset. This is normal, and it's a sign your belly fat is on the way next. And now sign number 6 is actually what confuses a lot of people because it doesn't look like a sign at all. It looks like a problem, and you might might be getting through your workouts, you might be, you know, trying to hit your steps the best you can. But outside of that, you just feel like you're lazy, you feel like you're moving less, you don't want to get up off of the couch as much, go get the mail, take the extra walk with your dog at night, and you're calling yourself lazy, you're frustrated, you feel like this motivation is leaving. But what's happening is your body is going into conservation mode. And there's a term for it. It's called your NEAT, your non-exercise activity thermogenesis. And this just means how much your body moves when you're not doing a dedicated workout. In a calorie deficit, your body automatically drops your NEAT to try and save calories. You don't decide to do this or not. This is just physics. And so it feels like laziness, but think of it like if your phone battery was on 20% What happens? It starts to dim the screen more, the apps start to slow down a bit, and you go into low power mode. And I notice this every time I go into a calorie deficit to lose fat, and I have to force myself to go get the extra walks, to take my extra daily steps, to push myself hard in my workouts. So if you're feeling a little bit lazier, don't beat yourself up and don't feel guilty. It's normal. And again, it's a sign that you're on the right track. Just don't actually get too lazy or you won't see progress. And this next sign, I can almost guarantee you, you've never heard of before, but once you understand it, you're going to look at fat loss almost completely different. Do you know how your body actually burns fat and what it does with the fat when you burn it? Most people guess you might sweat it out, you might poop it out, you might pee it out. And all of those are mostly wrong because for every 10 pounds of fat that you lose, roughly 8.5 pounds leaves your body as carbon dioxide, AKA you breathe it out. The other pound and a half, that will leave as sweat, pee, tears because of the water that we talked about earlier. So you don't melt fat for the most part, you breathe it out. And This is why if your breath has been a little raunchy, if it even almost has like a metallic, slightly weird taste, texture, or smell to it, that's the byproduct of fat leaving your lungs. Think of fat like firewood. When wood burns in a fireplace, where does it actually go? It doesn't just disappear. It leaves as smoke and steam going up the chimney. So if your breath has been a little off, even though you're brushing your teeth and chewing gum, again, this is a sign That fat is leaving your body, and eventually that fat will be pulled from your stomach. So just take a bunch of big deep breaths and exhales and you'll lose fat faster. You won't, but you get the point. And if you heard any of these and you were like, wow, I didn't know this at all, this guy Eric must know what he's talking about, and you want my help guiding you through your fat loss journey step by step, taking out all the guesswork and holding you accountable, This is what we do with our online coaching clients.
