Foot placement during step-ups shifts work between glutes and quads. Single-leg hip thrusts and Romanian deadlifts fix size imbalances between sides. Sumo squats hit inner thighs; box squats engage glutes more.

When you only tap your toes on the ground during step-ups, you are going to work more of your glute. When you have your foot closer in during step-ups, you're going to work more of your quad. And when you move your foot farther away, you're going to work more of your glutes. When you do a single leg hip thrust, you're going to help fix if one side of your glute is smaller than the other. When you do a supported single leg RDL, you're also going to help fix if one side of your glute is smaller than the other. Smaller than the other. And when you do sumo squats, you're working more of your inner thigh than you are your glutes. If you want to work your glutes, do box squats instead. And I hope this helped.
