Eric Roberts breaks down why calories aren't all equal: your body burns 0-3 calories digesting fat, 5-10 from carbs, and 20-30 from protein per 100 calories eaten. Protein demands the most energy to process, so eating more of it actually increases how many calories you burn overall.

Losing weight isn't just about calories in and calories out, and here's why. Your body burns a certain amount of calories digesting the food you eat. The number of calories burned depends on whether you eat protein, carbohydrates, or if you eat dietary fat. For example, for every 100 calories of dietary fat you eat, your body burns 0 to 3 calories, so not very much. But for For every 100 calories of carbohydrates, your body burns about 5 to 10 calories. So still not that much, but this is where it gets pretty crazy. For every 100 calories of protein that you eat, your body is going to burn 20 to 30 of those 100 calories. So it's almost like those 20 to 30 calories don't even count. So yes, calories in, calories out is true, but that's why eating more protein is going to help you burn more calories, which will make sure the calories coming in is then going to have more calories going out, leading to you losing weight.
