In this instructional video, Eric Roberts explains why people often feel discouraged during fat‑loss journeys because visible results lag behind the effort they put in. He introduces the effort‑reward loop, describing how the brain expects quick feedback and why this leads to early quitting. Roberts clarifies that fat loss shows up on the scale only after 7–14 days and that the body loses fat in layers determined by genetics, so the most disliked areas (stomach, love handles) are often the last to change. Using a toilet‑paper metaphor, he illustrates how each day of staying on target is a tiny sheet that only becomes noticeable after many sheets are removed, emphasizing cumulative progress. He provides realistic expectations: healthy, sustainable loss is 0.5–1% of total body weight per week (≈1–2 lb for a 200‑lb person). Faster loss risks muscle loss and rebound weight gain. Roberts stresses that fat loss is fundamentally about habit formation—meal‑prepping, planning, saying no to social pressure—and that habits develop gradually, like progressive overload in the gym. He normalizes setbacks, comparing them to missing a single savings deposit, and advises focusing on getting back on track rather than perfection. Throughout, he promotes a free 25‑day fat‑loss program for viewers seeking structured support.

If you've ever thought fat loss wasn't working after a couple of weeks, you're not alone. I'm going to show you how long it takes to actually see real results and how to avoid quitting right before it happens. I've helped over 17,000 people in this exact phase, and by the end of this video, you'll understand how long it will take to get to your goal body. Okay, so we need to understand why you think you should be losing fat faster. There is something called the effort-reward loop. Your brain expects to see results when you put in effort, and when it doesn't, it says, well, why even bother? That's why most people quit before the scale or your body starts to reflect the work. But fat loss is the opposite. What you do this week, you won't see it on the scale until 7 to 14 days later. So when you feel like, I've been perfect this week but the scale hasn't moved, or I don't look different. Yeah, that's how fat loss works. This is one of the biggest pieces of advice I give people in my 25-day free fat loss program, which you can download in the description below if you'd like. And here's the part that messes with everyone: even when fat loss is happening, your body won't show it where you want it the most. Let me tell you about one of my clients, Amanda. She was 3 weeks into her plan, eating right, getting her workouts in, but she kept saying, why is my stomach still the same? What she didn't realize is fat loss comes off in layers. Your body's genetics determine when and where you lose fat from first, and usually the places you hate the most— your stomach, your arm fat, your love handles, your thighs— those are usually the last areas that you lose fat from. But that doesn't mean it's not working. Amanda had already lost inches from her back, her legs, her face looked different. She just didn't notice it because she was only staring at the one area she hated the most. If you only measure progress by how your worst area looks, you ignore all of the changes that are happening everywhere else. Your body is losing fat, you're just zoomed in on the one area that changes last. And here's where it gets even tougher. There's a reason you don't notice progress right away, and I'm going to use this roll of toilet paper to change the way you think about losing fat forever. This roll represents how much fat you have to lose, and each sheet that I pull off represents one successful day you have hit your calories and stuck to your plan. If I rip off one sheet Does the roll look any different? What if I ripped off 7 sheets? Does the roll look any different? It's not until you start to combine multiple days, weeks, and months of successfully sticking to your plan that you even start to notice a difference. But even though you don't see a difference right away, that doesn't mean that progress isn't happening. You just need to stick with it long enough and don't quit before you start to see a difference. That being said, how long will it take to see progress? If your expectations are off for how long it's going to take, this is one of the biggest reasons people quit before they reach their goal body, because you get discouraged and you think you're not doing good enough, so you quit. The truth is, healthy sustainable fat loss where you actually keep the results and don't lose muscle usually comes out to 0.5 to 1% of your total body weight per week. So if you weigh 200 pounds, you're looking at 1 to 2 pounds of fat loss per week. Not 5, not 7, only 1 or 2. And if you're trying to go faster than that, it's going to be incredibly hard to stick with consistently, and you might end up losing muscle mass along the way, which means, yeah, your will go down, but you won't look the way you want to look, and you'll end up like that skinny fat. And that's not what you're here for. And I know this doesn't sound super fast, but look at it like this: if you lost 1 to 2 pounds per week for 6 months straight, you would lose anywhere from 24 to 48 pounds, which might be more than some of you watching this even want to lose. But most people quit before they ever get there because they don't understand how long It actually takes. And this is why we coach our clients on don't chase speed, chase consistency, because the people who lose fat the fastest usually end up gaining it back the fastest as well. And here's something that most people don't talk about enough. Fat loss isn't just about the scale or how you look. It's about changing your habits. And that doesn't happen Overnight. When you're losing fat, you're not just learning how to eat or how to work out. You're learning how to meal prep, plan ahead for the week, say no to social pressure, and somehow stay consistent when life gets busy. That stuff takes reps, just like in the gym. You don't go from lifting 10 pounds on bicep curls one week to 100 pounds on bicep curls the next week. You build up how much weight you lift Set by set, week by week. Habit changes work the same way. You have to be okay with being a beginner at first before you truly solidify a habit change. And if you need help with changing your habits, I mentioned earlier I have a free 25-day fat loss program in the description of this video if you want to check it out. And while we're on the topic of habit changes, let's talk about something else that might add a little bit of time to your journey? Setbacks. Setbacks will happen. You're going to have off days. You're going to mess up on your diet from time to time, and you might even backtrack a little bit. But here's the truth. One bad meal doesn't ruin your progress. One missed workout doesn't undo weeks of consistency, just like one perfect meal or one perfect week doesn't bring you all the progress you want. You wish it did, but that's not how this works. A setback doesn't mean that you failed. It's a normal part of losing fat. Think about it like this. Imagine you were saving money. If every week you were taking $100 from your paycheck and putting it into your savings, but one week something happened where you weren't able to save $100 that week, would you just take all of the money in your savings that you had saved up and throw it away? No. The money would still be there and you would just get back to putting in the $100 every week after that. Fat loss progress isn't about never slipping up. It's about always just getting right back on track. The people who get to their goal body, they're not perfect. They just don't quit. Fat loss always takes longer than you want, but it's not because of the amount of calories you burn or the amount of calories you eat. It's about rewiring habits, understanding realistic expectations, And learning how to keep going even when you aren't perfect. The scale will stall, your progress won't always be visible, and you'll have weeks where you'll feel like nothing is working. And that's normal. If you can accept that and keep going anyway, you will reach your goal body.
