I'm Scared To Start My Dream

Eric Partaker breaks down the three fears that stop people from starting: failure, not knowing enough, and risk. He walks through how to reframe failure as growth, identify what you need to learn, and list your actual risks to lower them.
Being scared to start your dream is a good thing. It means that you're pushing yourself in the right direction. But unless you learn how to overcome those fears, that dream of yours will remain simply a dream. Today, I'm going to show you exactly how to overcome those fears so that you can start that dream of yours and achieve your goals.
Hi, my name is Eric Partaker and I've been recognized as an award winning entrepreneur and as well as the CEO of the year. I'm also the author of two best selling books including the Three Alarms and I totally get what it feels like to be scared to start a dream. I've started several businesses throughout my career and it wasn't like, you know, I just did it, you know, willy nilly and didn't care about, you know, anything, was oblivious to fear. No, I definitely had those fears and it took a while to overcome them. And I just want you to just be rest assured that the fears that you're experiencing with regard to starting your dream, you can overcome them. You just need to identify what they are and practice some simple techniques which we're going to get into now to help you overcome those fears and start your dream. The number one fear that holds people back from starting their dream is that they're afraid to fail. And that's just not how the world works. First of all, because if you go through life not expecting to have any kind of failures, you'll never get anywhere. It's like if you were a kid and if you're going to join a sports team, but only if the coach promise to you that there's no chance that you're going to lose a game. We're going to win every single game all the way up through the championship and it's going to be like that every single season. That's just not how the world works. So you have to just embrace failure as yes, failure will happen as part of this journey, as part of starting this dream. It doesn't necessarily mean that the whole thing is going to fail, but that you should just be recognizing that along that journey there will be wins and losses. And it's part of the journey. It's more important that you're able to bounce back up quickly when things don't go your way. Rather than avoiding the knockdowns entirely, the number two fear that gets in the way of people starting their dreams is they fear that they don't know enough, that they don't have enough knowledge. Well, what do we do with this fear? Well, we increase our knowledge, right? So we identify what are the skills that we need to be learning, what's the knowledge that we need to be acquiring, how do we acquire that? Is it through a person, is it through a course, is it through a book? And then where are we building that within our schedules? We need to actually have scheduled within our calendar the time that is there for our expertise building, for our knowledge acquisition, for our learning. You need to schedule your learning. So the way to deal with that fear of not knowing enough is to tackle it by determining, well, what is it that you need to know? And, and then making that appear, scheduling that within your calendar so that that learning actually happens. The number three reason that often holds people back from starting a dream is that they're just afraid of taking risks. They're afraid, well, you know, what if I lose money, or what if.
People laugh at me or they don't think as highly of me anymore? And look, with starting anything, there's always going to be a degree of risk, but with risk comes reward. That's just how it works. So you can't expect anything to be risk free. And as a matter of fact, anybody ever comes to you and says, look, I got this, guaranteed you can't lose, risk free idea. That's right. There a red flag that something is not right with whatever that they're proposing. So when it comes to starting a dream, and if you're scared about the risks involved, then you need to just step back and ask yourself, okay, well, what are the risks? What are each of them? List them out and ask yourself, what's the best way that I could insulate myself against each of those risks? How could I lower the probability of that risk happening?
If the risk involves that you need additional financing or you might run out of cash, well, what's the best way to mitigate that risk? Could you be spending less money? Could you be accelerating revenue or sales somehow from, you know, the business or whatever it is that you're trying to build? Another common reason why people are too scared to start their dreams is because they fear that they're not good enough. Now this could relate to the previous point that I made about fearing that you don't have the knowledge or expertise required. But we already talked about what you should be doing there. Identify what it is that you need to be learning, the skills you need to acquire, and make sure it's scheduled into your calendar. But this could be simply that you just feel that maybe you don't deserve to start the dream, that you don't feel that you're capable of doing it like you're just not there. Maybe intellectually or bravery wise or courage wise, but we're all born in the same way. A clean slate. And so any conditioning that you've built up that makes you who you are today can also be undone. You can start to think in new ways. You can start to build a new you. You absolutely have what it takes to go after and start your dreams. But it starts here in the mind, and you need to believe it. And so what I would encourage you to do to help overcome this fear is just start writing a new story on a daily basis. Just take 10 minutes and write out who is the person that could be achieving these dreams. How does that person act and behave? How does that person show up and look in the world? And just use that as a journaling exercise to write out on a daily basis that new version of you who is capable of achieving these things? Who is capable of starting this dream? So you 100% have what it takes to overcome your fears and start your dreams. And it starts with becoming more courageous, which is why I think you're going to enjoy my next video right here, which is all about how to become more courageous.
