Flight Lieutenant Johnny Howe of RAF 229 Squadron pilots a Eurofighter Typhoon through a live airshow demonstration at Coningsby. The jet hits 600 mph and pulls up to 9 Gs, executing maneuvers like a half-Cuban roll and a pin-radius turn while staying subsonic to avoid a sonic boom.
It's my great pleasure to introduce the first of 2 displays for you today. Flight Lieutenant Johnny Howe putting the Eurofighter Typhoon through its paces. And as you can already hear, the sound of the jet stream now. During the display, Johnny is going to be between speeds of about 120 miles an hour and 600 miles an hour. He'll be pulling up to 9G. That means his body is going to weigh 9 times what it normally weighs, and up to -3G, demonstrating the incredible thrust and agility of the Eurofighter Typhoon. 3, 2, 1, go! Hey, Johnny's coming in for his slow-speed pass. At this point, the aeroplane will be doing about 110 knots. Johnny will effectively have the stick back in his lap, and he will just be balancing the lift using the engines. Johnny designed the sequence himself. The Typhoon display is part of 229 Squadron. And in a second, you're gonna see Johnny light the afterburners and he'll pull you up into a 70-degree nose-up attitude before performing a half Cuban into a high-speed run where we're gonna see him at about 6,500 feet.

Here's ahead, Johnny Cowens for his high-speed pass. He's got to be a little bit careful here that he doesn't go supersonic. If he did that, he'd make a very loud boom and he would hurt everybody's ears. So you'll see him in full afterburner, and then towards the end of the runway, you'll see him deselect that back to idle. Okay, Johnny's now going to line up for what we call an outside turn. It's effectively a turn but the wrong way round. This is about minus three G, extremely uncomfortable.

Coming in now for his pin radius turn. What Jody will do here, he'll keep the speed quite low, and then when he reaches datum, he'll just light the afterburners and do an extremely tight turn. Okay, on crowd power roll then. Johnny's going to turn back out on the quarterfinal.
