Jennifer Butler, welcome back. Actually, you've been here before. Thanks so much for being here.
Thank you. You know, I love empowering women, right?
So yes, absolutely. And you know what, I have to tell you that I just came back from my son's wedding weekend as we're recording, and all weekend I felt strong, confident, on and the least worried about how I look that I've ever felt. And I think in large part it's due to you. You have me selecting, you know, self-selecting my colors and things I look good in. And it's just so freeing to be in that spot where you feel like this is just good. I'm living in my own skin and I like the way it feels.
Well, also, I think for important occasions, you look back at pictures and you say, there I am, you know, just really congruent and harmonious with myself.
It is so true. And you— I'm so excited to talk a little bit about your new book, Dress Your Essence. And I am guessing that most of our listeners, including myself, have never really used the word essence to put to, you know, when I walk into my closet, what is it that I'm looking for. So would you talk a little bit about the definition of essence as you intended and the difference between image and essence?
You know, thank you for that question because I, I love answering that. So I want to just say the subtitle, Dress Your Essence, it says how to find your true personal style, which makes a lot of sense. But the next sentence, and express your beauty as a sacred work of art.
Mm-hmm.
Sacred, I mean, it's if we look at how we're created, and it's kind of so obvious when I say it to you, but it's not something we kind of really think about. So if there were a blank piece of paper and I had to create you, I would somehow have to come up with the color of your hair, your skin, and your eyes. Like, that's essential to you showing up in the world.. And in fact, if, um, if you don't have that or you're dressed in another color, I don't see you. Mm-hmm. I mean, I can look and I see there's a person there, but if you're wearing someone else's skin tone and their hair color and their eye color, then it sends a lot of mixed messages. And the difference between image and essence is in a way, if I could say, this is like soul dressing versus image dressing. Image is when we look outside ourself for the answer. You're looking at every magazine, you're looking at social media, you're looking at all the sales that the stores are having. Um, and you're saying, this is on sale, it's comfortable, I'll buy it. Right? So we want a different criterion to figure out who we are and bring that to the equation. So image is a reaction, and it's what I call an outside reference. Mm-hmm. You're just buying the— by the suggestion of what's around you. So when you look at the essence is you're looking at, in a way, the spiritual energy that you have. Right? So we're body, mind, and spirit.
Mm-hmm.
And the spirit comes alive when you wear your own coloring. Right? Love it.
Right? I absolutely love it. I'm distracted because I think I'm thinking back on a wedding weekend, and I'm wondering, do you know the answer to this? I mean, of course we all get white virgins. Why do they always put brides in white? Because that's not any bride's best color, is it?
Or is it? Well, we match the whites of the eyes. So for some brides, a dress that's been, you know, a pure white if they're a winter, you know, there's kind of an off-white and then there is the ivory. So depending on one's coloring that a person can wear, and sometimes it's better to kind of wear all white. As opposed to cutting the body in half, right? White shirt, dark blue jeans. Yeah, it's better to wear all white and then say your hair color, which is for you a beautiful copper, doing copper accessories.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Yes, you have me. You have me looking for copper. Oh, I have to buy that.
Yes, right.
Jennifer's budget. Yes. Okay.
Got it.
All right. Tell me this because I love this. You have 12 fashion attitudes. Yeah. Okay. First of all, what are they? Cause I love this.
And how do they, are these like archetypes or a little bit archetype, but when I tell you what they are, there are ways that we've made choices that aren't overly successful. You look at the first piece, I'll read them to you and you may say, wow, I dressed this attitude when I was younger, or this is. The attitude that my mother dressed me in, or this is the attitude that I used when I worked in a corporate world. So we have 12 of them. The first is the resigned. So the resigned person probably would never even read the book, right? Because they don't really care and they've given up. The main attitude is they've given up. Things feel really hopeless for them in the way they dress. The second is the unemotional. So Uh, we have a picture of a woman who's a lawyer and she's just wearing a suit and a plain blouse, no jewelry. Everything is very, very severe. So when she relates to clothing, it's okay. I just have to get this done, but I don't really care about it. Got it. Right? The third one is the dutiful one, and it's someone who wears a uniform and they don't vary from that. It becomes sort of the way that they dress.
So, so if I'm capturing you right here, this is not necessarily like a, a doctor in scrubs. This is someone who's kind of assumed their own uniform.
Is that right? Yes. Yeah. Okay. And beauty as a, as a creative expression is not there for them. Right. Okay. Then the, the fourth one we're talking about is the rebel. And so this is a person that says, okay, this is what's going on. I'm going to do the opposite. Right. So they wear, you know, there's an important formal wear and they wear jeans. Right. So, yeah, it's, but a lot of—
we just say most men are this or no.
Oh, okay. Right. The next one is last in line. And this is very important for women because everybody in the family is more important to them. They get everybody else dressed and then all of a sudden, oh, well, now there's me. And so emotionally, they feel like they're not as important as everybody else. Mm-hmm. And a lot of mothers, right, can relate to that. Right. The next one is modest. And this could be through, you know, your religious background. But basically, clothes are all about covering up and you should be hidden. Because wearing clothes in a certain way or expressing yourself in clothing is, is just not valued, actually.
Hmm.
Okay. The seventh is a conformist. So the conformist kind of looks around and says, okay, this is what everybody else is doing, so I'll conform to that.
Seventh grade.
Yeah. Okay. Okay.
Very good.
Very good. The invisible one is really about dressing to protect. So oftentimes everything is more, um, oversized, you know, the tent dressing. And it's, it's not that that's not a choice, but when it's your only choice and you only are in this one lane, then it can feel limiting. The ninth one is armored. And I relate to this one. So I always, I do wear a lot of belts because they work for my figure type. But the armored is wearing everything kind of tight and, you know, the leather jacket and your arms are folded and the attitude is, you know, don't bother me. Don't approach. The sublimated one is the one I can own because I worked in the fashion industry for 10 years so that I sublimated myself to be whatever was happening around me in fashion. Wow. I totally lost who I was. Interesting. No authentic expression alive. And, and I didn't know how to find it.
Does this, does this tend to happen at an age in our lives more than another?
Different times of transition. So let's say you are going into the job market or you're leaving or you're leaving a relationship or your children have grown up. There's something where you're saying, gee, I want to change. And so we kind of are experimenting with these different things. But it's just to say, wow, I didn't realize this sublimated until I read this. I said, oh my gosh, that's why I am probably doing this work, right? Because I had so lost myself and that I was really committed to finding a way. And then we have two more. The one is the status quo, and this is someone who they choose to kind of tone it down. Like, I don't want to be too much. I don't want to be too matchy-matchy. You know, I'm just going to look at again what's around me. I don't have to conform necessarily, but I want to make sure that I kind of fit in. I don't want to take risks. Hmm. Mm-hmm. And then the last one is the forever teen. And we can all— some people can relate when you're just a really You want to feel young, and so you dress in a way that's a little bit too young for you. So it's in our seminars, what we've been doing is kind of tracing either different moments in our life when we can relate to it or realize in a way that's how we were raised. Like in many families, right, the mother made all the children more important. But then all of a sudden, how do we transform transform the importance of beauty in our life? How does it get transferred from one generation to another? So it's very, um, kind of an extensive way of looking at our life and how we've made our choices. And when I owned a Sublimated is when I said, okay, I've got to figure out who I am. I don't want to waste more money. I don't want to have all these clothes hanging in my closet that I'm not wearing.
And so even while you were consciously doing that, you were gathering these clothes as a sublimated, you know, attitude, you would still potentially walk into your closet and not have anything to wear.
Yeah, that was the feeling. Or when I put something on, I felt like I always looked good. I looked like I had it together, but I didn't feel that I was me because I was living in the image place. Yeah. And I didn't know that there was such thing as an essential being. When I went into spiritual psychology in 2010, the first thing they said, you're a spiritual being having a human experience. I had it the other round. I knew I was a human being trying to be spiritual. Mm-hmm. Trying to do the good thing in the world. And, and so when I realized, oh, I've already kind of arrived with myself and everything that's happening in my life are these experiences of healing, right? Or opportunity to realize my, you know, the soul of who I am. So we, in, in spiritual psychology, which is in a way why I wrote the book, I finally realized, um, I started dressing women and I realized that they looked beautiful, but they really didn't get it because they were filled with their self-criticism. Instead of realizing, gee, I'm whole and complete at any given moment. You know, wait a little bit more. I may not be happy with my hair, but that's really an ego opinion. You know, the soul is saying, listen, I love you unconditionally. I understand that you're not feeling great today. But if we look at our higher power, which is unconditional love, understanding forgiveness, understanding that I am a work of art, as each of us is. Then it raises our consciousness in the way that we dress. And it shifts us from negativity to saying there is hope. You know, and I look and I talk a lot about levels of perception. So the first level is where you are image-based, right? And you're leading a meeting and you're going to go get your, you know, navy or black suit and white shirt. There you are. The strategy-based is when you realize, wow, I'm going to be in front of 2,000 people. I want to wear something that's effective. I want to be an effective communicator. Then the essence-based is when you realize, wow, that I am a soul and I'm going to dress my soul through wearing my own coloring. I'm going to have this self-ownership, self-responsibility. My hair is the perfect color for me. My eyes are beautiful. My skin tone is fantastic. I'm a work of art. I'm a walking celebration in my life. So that's encouraging, right, to have that frame of reference. That's why I wrote the book, because I felt there was too much where people were being overly critical of themselves. And I was saying, I wonder what percentage of critical self-talk has to do with the physical. I bet it's a lot. Yeah. Oh yeah. There's no ideal of perfection. It's all made up. You know, the soul wouldn't make up, oh, well, this person is prettier than that person. Oh, the soul is that you are beautiful in your own right, in your own uniqueness. And so when you focus on that, I mean, I think you seem to have enjoyed your colors, right?
Yes. Oh, so much so. Yes. And I realized that around me, what I was looking at outwardly, I had them. I had surrounded myself. My home was more a reflection of my colors than my closet was. Yeah, it was very interesting. And then the realization that I personally began to get more compliments after I was wearing my colors. My closet got compliments before that. Like, I like that sweater, you know what I mean?
I wasn't—
but it wasn't— they weren't seeing me. Yeah, it was interesting.
Yes. So that's why the book is talking about dress your essence. So we cover in the book the 4 vision boards, and the 4 vision boards were created by a whole group of people. So we got all my springs together. So when we're, when you look at like, where's the higher power? The higher power is in Mother Nature. She's the greatest artist and she lives in her life process with 4 key elements. The spring, and I'm gonna just hold this up so you can see it. Yeah. Spring is lit by the sunlight. So when I hold this up, I can see, oh, this is beautiful, but it doesn't match me. So we've never had these published before. Wow. Published in the book and people can hold them up to themselves and their friends and figure out, okay, I feel like, like I am a spring possibly. Yeah. And then the divine light of summer is the twilight and the twilight, which you are, is allowing the earth to live in a state of grace. So I hold that up and for you and it's perfect. And for me, it's still too dull, right? There's no energy. So the, so the methodology is to say, when I hold this outfit up to me in the mirror, Do I look more alive? Do I see my face? Right. Or is the outfit preceding me? Oh, yeah. I'm seeing the outfit and not myself. Yeah. There's this commitment to be yourself, right? You have to vote for yourself. So there's the autumn, and the autumn is all about the firelight. And again, when you hold them up, I can see that 3 of them don't match up to me. I live is, is in the winter family, which is the moonlight energy. Now you see my face. So because these are now published, people have a real way to guess at, you know, what they are. And then also there's a free online quiz. And then there's a, what, the Saturday every month we give a webinar. So we talk about this because this is really You know, when you look at humanity and its consciousness, this is life-changing. Mm-hmm. Because when you have an attunement to who you are and you really trust, you have an inner confidence that's unshakable. There's something that happens. People can project on you and you can realize they're just sharing, they're having a sharing moment of themselves that's coming toward you. What they're saying in a way has nothing to do with you. The whole way of understanding yourself that most people really want, they wanna have, Yeah. You wouldn't realize that it would come through clothing and what we wear. But because you're the only one that's you, this is the lifetime you're alive. The only way I see you is through your pigment. Then the way we're created has a whole level of significance that we hadn't realized before.
What about someone who's listening who feels like, but for work to be appropriate, I need to be in navy or I need to be in black, and that's what's acceptable. How do I bring out my color if that's actually not in my palette?
I think what you can do is bring it out with the accessories. So if a man's not wearing a jacket, he might be wearing a pocket square. He has his belt and shoes. So let's say he has brown hair. Brown is a very beautiful accessory, right, with black or navy. Because I work with a lot of people in all kinds of professions and they find a way, let's say for you, let's say you need to wear olive, for example, but you could wear olive with copper accessories. Okay. Right. So hair color is really key. The hair color is one of the main way you buy your jewelry. Or your watch or your belt and shoes, because the hair color is what is foundational in your life.
Okay, well, let's talk about that, because you and I both know we could change our hair color 5 times this week if we wanted to. What happens if— what happens if I say, you know, I don't just have a hot spot, I have a hothead, and I could go gray at any moment?
What if I do? Well, if you do go gray, you know, the palette does change. Okay. Okay. There's what, what is consistent for each person is what we call the secret triad. So I'm, I'm trained to paint your colors. So let's say you said to me, okay, I, I don't know what to do about my hair. So if I started with your skin tone and your eye color and paint them together, I get the right hair color for you. That's how integrated you already are. And that's when people study with me, they learn to paint their own coloring. That's how courses that we teach. So then we end up with the right hair color and then you start buying your accessories. If you, if you don't like it, there's different values of the hair colors. Let's say someone is dark blonde, right? And there's a dark blonde, there's a medium blonde, and there's light. You know how someone has blonde hair that's many shades? Yes. And we give them the very darkest value, the medium, and the light. So if they want to buy a pair of shoes or flats or a boot, they can, they can practice with the different values. Then they wear their gold jewelry. They usually, you repeat in threes. So if we start at the top of the body, let's say we're taking your hair color, which is a beautiful copper. So you're going to buy, it can be a hat, earrings, scarf, choker. Longer necklace, belt, bracelet, gloves. I'll take any of these. That could be in your hair color. But the thing is, nature has not made a mistake with you. You're already in balance. That's it. Yourself. That you focus on your own beauty. And when you wear your own color, um, then you become your own celebration. It's just very People love it. I mean, I worked with over 7,000 people and they've all, you know, made the shift and are happier because of it. I also want to say in terms of the background of this, it came from the very ancient knowledge of Egypt. In Egypt, they understood vibrational energy. Really? Right. And the vibrational energy at some point creates you. I call it your own harmonic convergence, right? So that you show up in the world And then you acknowledge Mother Nature. Thank you so much for creating me as I am. I'm committed to living in my own coloring, right? To celebrate my creation that we partnered, right? We didn't just— I mean, I guess we could think here we were thrown here by mistake. I'd rather have the other story.
I love it. How far does this go? I know, I know in our previous podcast, and we're gonna put that in the show notes by the way, cuz I want you to hear every little drop of genius that Jennifer has. We talked a little bit about how it can show up in your environment. You may have, you may have self-selected little things or bits of color that you love and that's why you love them. And that was true for me. What about, what about geography? Like where we end up living, does this have anything to do with our coloring and our season?
Well, in terms of the— if we look at the archetype of our culture, obviously California is mainly the blonde spring, right? The eternal youthful. That's— that is the sunlight. That's the spring. I would say in terms of culture, more England and Scotland where we have the beautiful mist, right? That's the summer. Because, you know, the sun fades color. Oh, we think of Italy would be autumn and New York would be winter. So just to give people kind of frame of reference. I also encourage people like, what is your heritage? Like, I'm half Swedish, so I love looking at Swedish fashion and Swedish furniture. And what would I honor within myself from that culture? So there's many ways that we can dress, but I'm committed that no matter what I do, I'm still using my own coloring. Yeah, right.
Yeah.
And dress boho chic one minute and classic tailored and preppy. I have all those looks, but I don't go outside my own, um, identification. It's a self-identification to a color, creating harmony and balance in your universe. So I think that's something to aspire to.
I do too. And I'm wondering about children. You can be a 50-year-old woman and have a 5-year-old today. I mean, it is 2024, 25, but a lot of us are more in the gift-giving for grandchildren or watching people raise children. How much does it potentially build confidence in children to be dressed or given a certain type clothing that reflects their color versus doesn't.
Yeah, very important. And I want to digress for a minute. So my teacher, Suzanne Kegill, who created this work, she started in the 1940s. I met her in the 1980s. She worked a lot with Virginia Satir, and Virginia Satir created family therapy. Oh my gosh. What's important about family therapy? Is that each child had their own coloring that created them in their own physical form. And they had those colors in their bedroom and they wore their own coloring so that the mother and father didn't project their own colors on their children. And the children had this confidence very, very early in life because the colors helped identify them. I mean, we could say at the level of personality, but I would go beyond that. They knew their own inner light, right? And they could trust that in the world. So I've worked with a lot of children. I got a picture recently of, you know, I just graduated from 3rd grade and this is what I wore. I got a picture of a young man. This is what I wore to the prom. I wore my royal blue, you know, and they're very good because they don't have the, the, um, concern that we elders do, right? We are tied in sometimes to being overly appropriate, and it gets in the way of our self-expression. Well, when I do young children, they're really great. I can say, okay, these two colors, which one's a better match? And they know right away. They know right away.
Very, very cool. I love that so much. Oh my gosh.
And the book, I—
you held that up and I had no idea how big it is. This is like coffee table book. This is what I would call that. This is a keeper. So excellent. So to everybody, this is Dress Your Essence by Jennifer Butler. I want to ask again, so the 3 action steps that we could do right away for listeners to begin dressing in our essence, what would they be?
Well, we want to match your hair, skin, and eyes. So the fun exercise you could do, let's say if it's you, and I would say, do you have anything copper? And you go around your house. I can't believe it. I have these copper, I have this copper tray. I have copper candlesticks. I didn't even realize, right? I have a copper bowl. So you can look at your house, but also with the wardrobe. If you say, today I'm going to look at matching my hair color. I'm going to look at the shoes. I'm going to bring out my brown shoes to see if they match the brown of my hair. My eyes are blue. I'm going to see if I have a beautiful blue shirt or a blue scarf. So the key is that you look in the mirror and you hold these things up in the mirror right to your face and you say, do these match me? And remember, the hair is the foundation. Skin tone is self-love and intimacy. So as, as a woman, you can start looking at your makeup and your blush..
Right.
And then your eyes, we do the lights of the eyes. So it's good to go to the daylight with a mirror and kind of what is the light shining? So my eyes look brown, but the inner light is amber. So it's, we're really fascinating creatures. You gotta be committed to self-de development. Mm-hmm. You wanna have an attitude of just saying, you know, I'm worth it. I'm worth it to figure out. While I'm alive this lifetime, I'm worth it to be an authentic human being. And I want to take that journey. In part, I realize now after today that part of that is the way that I dress. You can look at handbags, you know, all your home furnishings, your car. But the key is to take it out and hold it up to you and match it up. You have to see it in a mirror so the body physically can have the relationship of whatever you're holding up. Hmm.
I love that. Oh my gosh. Okay. Tell us a little bit about the quiz. You also have a masterclass kind of in companionship with this book. How does somebody get involved and where will they find these?
When they get the book, when they contact us, we have a masterclass through Eventbrite. So anybody who's bought the book, the masterclass is free. Excellent. In the morning, I kind of discussed the philosophy and people break into groups and we ask questions like, you know, how, how was beauty important growing up? How important is it to you now? What do you consider to be beauty? Someone said, oh, the beauty of my garden, or I love artwork. And then some people said, you know, I really want to look nice. You know, clothing is important to me. And then in the afternoon, a lot of people sent in amazing pictures where they put outfits together and I gave them feedback. You know, this is what I want to wear for Thanksgiving. I'm going on a date. What do you think of this outfit? So I try to give them the practical application. In January, we are going to start a 10-week course, but the masterclass is free. And then after that, people want to say if they want to spend more time with us, then they would invest in the masterclass. You can go online at JenniferButlerColor.com and there is a free quiz. And you, you take the quiz. There's probably several questions like if you were to be a work of art, you know, if you were, do you consider yourself to be really outgoing or do you have a more gracious personality? Are you kind of focused on leadership or are you more of an abstract thinker? So they all belong to the seasons. And at the end, we give you a season. The important thing is You know, we are not our personality. We're beyond that. And so if you answer it from your temperament or personality, sometimes that's the opposite of your essence. So you have to just say, okay, I'm committed to taking this quiz from my real self. Right. And we are committed to doing that. Not how I think I should act in the world, not who I think I should be, but just for my own self. And when you answer the question from that place, you're answering it more from the inside. That's the soul of you, right?
That is so good. Does it help if somebody says, answer this as if you were a child?
That's a beautiful way. Okay. From your innocence.
Yes.
Yeah. Okay. Also, what's fun is to have other people take the quiz for you. What do they, what would they— Oh yeah. So they can do that for themselves, but then they take it for you as well. And you might say, well, I think I'm a spring. And they say, no, no, no. You know, I've known you 25 years. I don't think that's, I think that's how you act in the world, but I think you're really a summer. And you know, it's, it's fun. It really, we're dealing with the human psyche here. Yes. The gestalt of being alive on the planet Earth. Right. The big question.
So, so wonderful to talk to you again. Congratulations again on the book, the new book, Dressing Our— or what is the title? Sorry, Dress Your Essence. Fantastic. And, and you can see it all if you're watching video. If you can't, it is a coffee table book which would probably inspire lots of great conversations if that's where it was in your house. So just saying. Also, It is probably a great gift-giving idea. So just want to plant that seed for, for anybody, for any season, not necessarily the holidays.
Jennifer, thanks again for being here. Wonderful, wonderful to be with you and see you again.
