How Toxins are Disrupting your Sex, Stress and Thyroid Hormones
2 Apr 2024 · 36 min
In this Flipping 50 episode, host Debra Atkinson interviews naturopathic doctor and heavy‑metal detox expert Wendy Myers about how environmental toxins, especially heavy metals, interfere with thyroid, sex and stress hormones in mid‑life women. The conversation begins with a brief promotion for Blue Sky CBD sleep gels, then shifts to Myers’ personal health crisis at age 37 that led her to discover high levels of mercury, cesium, thallium, arsenic and uranium despite a seemingly healthy lifestyle. She explains why conventional blood tests miss most metals and advocates hair mineral analysis (HTMA) as the most practical screening tool, noting that lead still requires a blood test. Myers describes how metals disrupt hormone production – mercury impairs thyroid hormone synthesis and conversion, while a range of metals inhibit hydroxylase enzymes needed for estrogen, testosterone and DHEA synthesis. She stresses that many menopausal and post‑menopausal women are prescribed thyroid medication or hormone replacement without addressing underlying metal toxicity. Practical, low‑cost detox strategies are outlined: ample hydration, sea‑salt (rich in trace minerals), magnesium, calcium, zinc, copper, and dietary sources like beef liver and bee pollen. More intensive interventions include binders (charcoal, modified citrus pectin, zeolites, C60), infrared saunas, and ionic foot baths, with a cited 25‑year study linking regular sauna use to a 40 % reduction in all‑cause mortality. Myers discusses iodine’s dual role – essential for thyroid hormone production and protection against radioactive iodine uptake – and advises cautious titration to avoid hyper‑thyroid symptoms. She also mentions muscle‑testing and bioenergetic testing to personalize supplement choices. Listeners are directed to her free docuseries “Heavy” (theheavymovie.com) and a detox checklist, and encouraged to follow her on social media @myersdetox. The episode aims to educate women 45‑70 about hidden toxin exposure, how to test, interpret results, and implement both simple and advanced detox protocols to restore hormonal balance.

Real quick, before we dive into this episode, I have a little sleep secret I want to tell you about. Look, sleep is crucial for your fitness, but it's crucial for just plain old everyday life and function.
And I find I sleep great unless I have a migraine.
And I've had more than my fair share since perimenopause all the way through postmenopause. My secret weapon was Blue Sky CBD sleep gels. Each gel contains 25 milligrams of CBD and 25 milligrams CBN for deep restorative sleep. Something about it helps to reduce inflammation, which I believe for me was key in helping me get to sleep. But the biggest thing is so many of the over-the-counter solutions, whether for sleep or migraines, can ruin gut health, and liver health. Neither one of those did I want to be problematic for me. So this option is recommended by healthcare providers worldwide and backed by thousands of happy customers, many of whom come from our Flipping 50 community. There is zero THC, so it's non-habit-forming. It's made by a trusted family-owned company that we all can feel good about. Third-party tested for purity and potency. Dr. Wendy Myers, thank you so much for being here.
Yes, thank you so much for having me.
We could just totally be transparent. What got you here? Why are you in health? Why in this field? Why do you talk about detox? How is it important to you personally?
Yes. Well, when I was 37, I started having some health issues and just really not feeling well. Brain fog, bouts of anger, not able to lose weight, and I just not sleeping very well. I thought, oh my God, what is going on with me? And I didn't have any major health issues, but I just wanted to go figure out what was going on with me. And so I went to my functional medical doctor and did all these tests. I like, figure out what's wrong, dude, test me for everything. And she found out I had the hormone levels of a menopausal woman, which I was thrilled to hear at 37 years old. And, you know, like, what could be worse? Yes. And so, and I thought, well, that must be bad because my hormone levels were really low. And so they wanted to put me on thyroid hormones, which I did. And they wanted to put me on testosterone creams and estrogen replacement therapy and progesterone and all this stuff. And I just thought it just didn't really resonate with me because I just thought, well, isn't that for menopausal women? And am I going to have to do this for life? You know, like, it just didn't make sense to me. I thought, well, what about just restoring my body's ability to make hormones? It did it before. Like, why isn't it doing it now? And so that— so I went on Dr. Google and trying to figure out what causes adrenal fatigue and asking other questions. Yeah, so I did some heavy metals testing. I found out I had all these heavy metals. I had mercury, I had cesium, thallium, arsenic, and uranium. And I was like, where the heck did these come from? And that started me on this journey of learning about heavy metals. And now I have my website that's all about heavy metals and toxins. I got really into it because I felt like I was doing everything right. I was eating an organic diet, eating mostly everything at home from the farmer's market. Taking a huge gigantic bag of really high quality, very expensive supplements. I was exercising. I wasn't stressed. I just thought like, what more could I do for my health? And how did I get these heavy metals when I have such a healthy lifestyle? And so I think a lot of people, they are not thinking about heavy metals. They just think that they have a healthy lifestyle and they're healthy. And but they don't realize that they have kind of maybe subclinical symptoms like fatigue and brain fog and mood swings, hormonal imbalance, trouble losing that muffin top, or they're obese, or they, they have other health issues going on, no libido, or subtle signs their body is telling them that it's not working properly. And everyone has heavy metals, especially if they have complex illness. And this needs to be on people's radar to address any symptom that people have, because these heavy metals are interfering in every different organ system in our body.
And I want to come back and ask you that again. I think because it's not the first place that most people would go. I mean, first they're going to blame themselves for, I'm not exercising enough, maybe I didn't get enough protein, or I'm just not getting enough sleep, or there's a lot of stress. And they're finding reasons that, oh, this would be normal for me, but they're not necessarily going to go to do a heavy metals test. So 14 years ago, you were working with a functional doctor already. You were already pretty well tuned in, because I would have to say that the majority of my listeners were not there 14 years ago. We're just— it's newer to us.
Yeah, yeah. I've always been into health and eating healthy and exercising and all that stuff, but heavy metals were not on my radar at all.
How does somebody know I should test this?
Well, if you're breathing, you know, you should get a heavy metal test.
Okay then.
Yes, because we breathe in 11,000 liters per day of air. And air pollution is the number one way that toxins enter our body. You know, you have all that particulate matter from tires, from brakes, from manufacturing, and the stuff they're spraying in the skies, or spraying like something like 500 tons of aluminum and other particles on the planet to control the weather, the geoengineering. And there's just so many other sources, not to mention our water and our food. You know, there's tons of medications and hormones and other chemicals in our water supply. And even if you're drinking filtered water, you're showering in that municipal water. And so even if you eat organic food, you know, there's been research 7 to 25% of organic food is cross-contaminated with pesticides. The conventional crops are growing right next to organic crops. So you can kind of drive yourself nuts thinking about this stuff, but it's good to be informed and knowledge is power. But you need to really be thinking about a daily detox type of program, adding detoxification to your health regimen, just like you do exercise or diet. Diet or, you know, drinking water and other things that you're doing for your health. Detoxification is just as important and the results will do speak for themselves, but it all starts with a chemicals or heavy metals test to kind of give you that information that you need to act on that. Because you're not going to go do all this stuff, infrared saunas and detox supplements, other, other things that you may choose to do. If you don't really have that motivation. And testing can give you that motivation that, oh, I need to do something about this, especially when you learn what metals you have and what they can be doing to your body and contributing to the health issues that you know that you have.
There's so much to unpack here. So first of all, for somebody who does want to test, is this, uh, like a tough thing to do? Tell me what's entailed, and will it hurt? And how soon do I have results?
No, it's super easy. The, the best heavy metals test I like people to do is called a hair mineral analysis, or an HTMA is what you can search for on the internet. They're less than $100. You can do them at home. They just take a little bit of hair. They don't hurt, no blood draw. You get results in a few weeks. The lab's a little slow, but it takes a few weeks to get your results. But that is really the easiest, and for me, I think the most accurate heavy metals test. Maybe not for lead, For lead, usually a blood test is the old standby for that one. But for all— for most metals, you'll see them on a hair mineral analysis. But there's no perfect heavy metals test, but the hair mineral analysis gives us a roadmap. It shows us your mineral deficiencies and toxicity, which we can have, and it gives us a roadmap to create like a detox program. And you can figure out what you— what metals you have and then what supplements you need to take to remove those specifically So good.
Okay, so question here on— we're educating this audience a lot, so many of them have heard, some maybe you're hearing for the first time, but when they do tests or lab tests, first of all, you got to make sure you have the right kind of test. But in this case, you're giving us what to take. When we get back the labs, if we were looking at it, are we just gonna see there's norms and you're in the norm, or are we going to see these are optimal levels and you're not optimal, or you are optimal, or do we need someone to go go through this with us so we know for sure what we're seeing.
You usually need someone to go through it because one, when you're looking at it, it's very familiar to me, but to someone that doesn't read labs, it's going to be like Greek to them. Plus, there's a lot of hidden information that it's taken me a long time to figure out, training with doctors from all over the world on how to read these things. And it's not always what meets the eye, but usually people will have— they'll have metals like they'll have high levels of mercury or uranium or cesium or arsenic or other metals that it's obvious you have those metal toxicities. But when people have no metals coming out, they don't have the energy, their nutrients, and they maybe genetic roadblocks to detoxification, that's really problematic. And that's where I think people can feel like they're out of the woods when they're not. You know, I've tested Dr. Mercola and Donna Gates and Ben Greenfield and a lot of very healthy people. They have tons of metals coming out because their body detoxes. Detoxes really well. So when someone has no metals, then I know that they have problems and they need to facilitate their body's natural ability to detox.
Okay. So when you say tons of metals coming out, is that evidenced by the hair analysis or by something else? Are you talking other things coming out? Okay.
No, they'll have high metal levels on their hair test, and that means their hair is— their body's excreting it into the hair to get rid of it. Our hair is kind of like a garbage can. The body's like, ew, let's get this out of here, and they get it out and it excretes it in the hair. And so we'll see that in inheritance, the metal levels will be really high.
Okay. If we were going to talk about things— so you mentioned mercury and you kind of passed over it, but I think one of the biggest things is we're talking to an audience who grew up dieting, you know, and the lower fat something is, the better it was in our minds at one point. A lot of people will default to tuna. Talk to me about tuna or canned fish.
Yeah, I think the canned tunas are relatively okay because those are skipjack tuna. They're not nearly as high in mercury as the kind of the other, the bigeye tunas and the, the tunas used for ahi at sushi. Those are like, those are 400-pounder fish. They're huge. The skipjack tunas used for the canned tunas are a different type of tuna and they're a lot smaller. I'm not worried about the little fish. But the large migratory fish, those are, are high in mercury.
Okay. Can you pinpoint certain heavy metals that might be getting in the way specifically? I think is there something that gets in the way of thyroid or something else that gets in the way of the sex hormones?
Yeah, so I know a lot of women out there listening are having hormone issues and we're having them well before menopause. But you know, you're still producing hormones after menopause, which is less than before. But there's a lot of things throwing a wrench into our hormone production, our thyroid, sex, and stress hormones. And so for, as far as thyroid's concerned, which sets your metabolism, which sets your mood, because you'll be depressed if you have low thyroid hormones, you know, not to mention for other things that we need. Mercury. Is a big, big culprit in low thyroid function or even hyperthyroidism, where it's revving up too much. And so what the mercury does, it interferes in thyroid hormone production a few different ways, and it deposits in the thyroid. And your body can develop a sensitivity or even an allergy to mercury. And if it does so, you could develop Hashimoto's, which is autoimmune thyroid issues where your body is attacking your thyroid tissue and destroying it, trying to get at the mercury. And so that's cause of thyroid dysfunction, but it also poisons the body's ability to produce thyroid hormones, convert T4 to T3, which is the active form of thyroid hormone. And it interferes in a lot of other different ways. It deposits in the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and all these other glands that are the orchestrators of our thyroid and hormone signaling systems to tell us to produce more, produce less, go here, go there. The mercury is very devastating. To the thyroid. And everyone's being exposed to mercury. And it's one of the reasons that we have so many people on thyroid medication or have low thyroid function that's maybe undiagnosed yet. And then when it comes to other hormones, like our sex hormones, our libido, our estrogen and things like that, a lot of things interfere in that. Mercury, lead, thallium, arsenic, aluminum, tin, cesium, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, glyphosate, organophosphates, phthalates in beauty products, household cleaners, things like that. And what happens is there are hydroxylase enzymes that are very susceptible to heavy metal inhibition, and you need these enzymes to make your hormones, to convert hormones to other types of hormones. And DHEA, which you need to make other hormones, also very susceptible to toxins. So if you don't make enough DHEA, you're not going to make enough hormones. And I can go into other specifics, like what specific metals interfere in your testosterone or whatnot. But the bottom line is, if you have low libido, it's usually going to be a toxin issue. If you have estrogen dominance or low estrogen production, it's going to be a toxin issue. There's a lot of toxins that mimic estrogens in our bodies, and they go in and they block the receptor sites on the cells. So they go and they lock into those hormone receptors on our but they're very weak. But your body gets a signal, oh, we have plenty of estrogen down here, don't need to make any more. And so you end up not producing enough estrogen and then not getting the effect of estrogen that you need. And you get in this estrogen-dominant state even though your labs come back as low estrogen. And so it's just kind of this strange conundrum. And long story short, heavy metals are interfering in your hormones. And there's like, there's so much research. Like on my website, I have an article on heavy metals that interfere in your thyroid hormones, 180 research citations. Another article, how chemicals interfere in your hormone or your thyroid. Lots of other articles specifically on estrogen, testosterone, the exact mechanisms. If you're a big nerd and you want to dive right in, you can go do that. But the long story short is your libido is tanked and you just feel like your hormones are out of whack, or you have reproductive issues, you have endometriosis, fibroids, other things like that, PCOS, those are all caused by toxins. And I've had umpteen doctors on my show that have written specific books about endometriosis, specific books on PCOS, and that one of the main underlying root causes is toxins, pesticides, chemicals, heavy metals, things like that. No matter what age you are, these metals are interfering in your hormones, interfering in fertility. 1 in 5 couples has fertility issues and metals, they're destroying your hormones. And they're partly responsible for some of the fertility issues that millions of couples are having around the world.
Okay. So I want to ask this question. There's a bunch of them, but I want to ask you this one. So primarily we're talking to women, you know, 45 to 70. They're either in late stage perimenopause or they have hit postmenopause. Was. The majority of them, I'm going to go out on a limb and say, are probably on a thyroid medication. Many of them have also— they're taking some kind of hormone replacement and DHEA as a part of it. If that's true, based on what you've said, am I interpreting correctly that if nobody said to them, let's do a heavy metal test, that could be part of the reason they need these things, but we're not actually getting to the root cause of why we need them? It's not just menopause, but the toxic level is amplifying menopausal changes. Is that right?
Absolutely. And that's the thing with your conventional doctor and even your functional medical doctor, they're not looking at heavy metals because they don't know what to do about them and they don't have the right test. They'll do a blood test usually if you bring it up to them. Hey, I think I'm exposed to this. You know, most doctors will do a blood test for lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium, and that's it. And there's a whole lot more to that. And usually the blood work will come back false negative because the body doesn't let metal just float around in the blood. They cause a lot of problems. They store them away in your fat tissue and your bones and things like that.
Yeah.
So the tests they're doing are inadequate if they even do them at all. That's part of my mission is educating people about this so they can, you know, you have to advocate for yourself and look for answers that you may not be getting at your primary care physicians.
I think detox is a word thrown around a lot, and it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. That gets to be superficial, that a lot of people just think, oh, well, the body detoxes itself naturally, so it's no problem. But talk about the additional things that we can do for detox. First of all, maybe some of the really easiest things that somebody could start doing today at home with very low or no cost, and then talk about maybe some of the more— I've got to invest in something to do infrared sauna, or what other are your favorite things?
Yes. Yeah. And so going back to what you said before about our body detoxing naturally on its own, yes, it does, but it was meant to do that in caveman times. You know, it's equipped to do that in caveman times, not now when we've got dozens of heavy metals being scrudged up from the planet. If you look around, everything has metal in it. That on your desk or in your house, that— where's that coming from? It's coming from a mining company and industry. All this stuff is being spewed into the planet. All the coal burning, that's bringing mercury and cadmium and lead and stuff into the planet, settling. That's where the fish get it. It's all the coal burning. That's where all the mercury is coming from that's in the fish. So yes, our body is equipped to detox, but it's not equipped to deal with the 100,000 chemicals that are on the planet today. And so it gets overwhelmed and it just starts— it can't deal with it. It just starts sticking the stuff in our fat, in our brains, in our bones, in our glands, our organs, and eventually they break down in function. Okay. And so that's why it can be hard to see them on tests because the body is very intelligent storing this stuff away. But it does start causing problems. And so what you can do about it is very simple things. Hydration, super important, very basic things. So I'm more of a proponent of getting the body— optimizing the body's ability to excrete this stuff. And you can do that with hydration, with taking minerals— magnesium, calcium, trace minerals. And we can unpack that a little bit more as well.
But when you say trace minerals, what does that mean?
Yes, just sea salt. That's it. Just sea salt, not land salts like Himalayan pink salt, because these sea salts match our body chemistry perfectly. So that's really what I prefer people eat. It doesn't really matter though. If you have some pink salt, use it up. But sea salt, I, I like the Celtic sea salt, Redmond sea salt, not with like table salt cuz that's mostly sodium, but with sea salt that matches our body chemistry perfectly. So we need to be getting more of that. We're all mineral deficient. And when you take minerals, it pushes out and displaces heavy metals. So it's a very simple—
yeah. And how would a woman know she needs more?
We're all deficient. We're all mineral deficient. If you're breathing, if you're breathing, you are mineral deficient because it's not in the food. And everyone's freaked out about salt because the doctor's, oh my God, the sodium. So yeah, people are And they think they're so virtuous by not doing it. Yeah, that's smart, but not— don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. We need sea salt that has 80, 100 minerals in it that we need. Your body just doesn't function. Minerals are the spark plugs of the body, and that needs to be the focus of your supplementation. And it's not very sexy because minerals are cheap. I used to do this too when I was learning about health. I'm like, oh my God, I gotta have turmeric, I'm gonna have resveratrol, and I gotta have this, and all these antioxidants, and they're really expensive. But you need to focus on minerals first when it comes to your supplementation. That's magnesium glycinate or malate. Calcium lactate is great. Zinc, copper. I put bee pollen in my smoothie to get copper and other vitamins. Beef liver is amazing for minerals. Thyroid glandular is amazing also. Iodine and other nutrients your thyroid needs.
Talk about iodine just for a little bit because I think that also goes both ways depending on who you're talking to. You know, should I have less iodine or do I need more iodine to optimize my thyroid?
Yes. Well, so your thyroid hormones are made of iodine. So if you don't have iodine, you don't have thyroid hormones. That's how it works.
Okay. Why are we told so very often, "Go lower in iodine"?
Yeah, that's usually for Hashimoto's. They'll say— because in research it shows that when people take iodine, their thyroid antibodies go way up. So the antibodies that are a marker of their body's attacking their thyroid. But the key, I think, is that you start with maybe 300 micrograms a day of iodine and slowly work your way up. I think people will take too much of a good thing. They'll take too much iodine, it revs their thyroid up, and they have heart palpitations or anxious, and they can't sleep and sweaty and stuff like that. And they're like, ooh, the iodine's bad, but they just need to take less of it and slowly titrate their way up. Because long term, you know, I don't feel like people will recover from any thyroid issue unless they are taking iodine, because you need it not only for your thyroid but to get rid of fibrocystic breasts. You have thyroid receptors, and so we need iodine for other things than just the thyroid, not to mention it detoxes you protects you from— there's a lot of radioactive materials in our environment. From— there's been thousands of nuclear testing and accidents that have put cesium and other radioactive materials into our environment. So iodine protects your thyroid from that, you know. So there's just a lot of different reasons.
So good. Yeah, it's so good, I think, to hear you say that, because iodine is a big source of confusion for a lot of people. And which way do I go? And do I or don't I? And so thank you for clearing that up. And to ask follow-up question. So is that a forever thing? I mean, you're taking about 50, you said. Are you going to continue taking that forever? It's not like you're building yourself back up to a certain level and then you're going to coast on that. You're going to continue it?
It just depends, you know, things change as your health status changes. So that may very well change for me at some point. So I was taking a lot less than that. I was taking 10 milligrams a day and it just wasn't enough. For me. And so it's just really everybody is different. So what works for me may not work for the next person. I do bioenergetic testing based on what I need, but I also do muscle testing as well.
Explain to somebody listening who doesn't know what muscle testing is.
Yes, so it's a test you do based— like, you can hold a supplement, and it's a test of your autonomic nervous system telling you that you need something or not. And so you'll kind of sway forward if you need it or backward away from it if you don't need it. And so there's an art to that and a fine-tuning, but there's lots of doctors out there, Dr. Klinghardt and other practitioners I've gone to that do muscle testing to see if you need something or not.
Love it.
Thank you for fielding all my questions very patiently and not for laughing at— you have a detox checklist that you were going to share with listeners. Where can they get their hands on that?
I actually have something even better. I have a docuseries that I produced called Heavy. And so this is a docuseries where I interviewed 107 experts on this topic. And we talk about how heavy metals and environmental toxins cause obesity and resistant weight loss. There's another episode on how toxins are the number one cause of diabetes. That may be news to a lot of people. Poisons your ability to regulate your blood sugar. We talk about how metals poison our mitochondria and our ability to produce energy. We talk about how toxins interfere in your digestion. Toxins play a big role in that.
Okay, how do we get our hands on that?
Yes, you can get your eyeballs on that at theheavymovie.com. We have all the solutions as well, like how to detox, what to do about all this stuff, and really has been the culmination of my life's work and educating people about toxins and what they do to our body. There's more and more research coming out every day that heavy metals are a big underlying root cause of so many chronic health issues.
So awesome. And before I let you out of here, I want to ask you about favorite ways to detox. So I know in the green room we talked just a little bit about chlorophyll. What might be two other of your favorite ways to detox?
Yeah, so I mentioned minerals are amazing. Binders are also really good, things like charcoal, modified citrus pectins, zeolites, anything that— like carbon, C60. PowerC6.com has a great one. Anyone can take these. They come in and they absorb toxins like a sponge, and then you excrete them through the urine and stool. Very easy and safe to do. You're getting a mercury filling removed, take a bunch of charcoal or another, you know, a binder. If you're going to sushi, I take some chlorella to help absorb those metals so they don't get into my body. Or go to a fast food restaurant. But I also like infrared saunas and ionic foot baths, you know, sweating, tried and true. There was a 25-year study, people that did an infrared sauna 5 days a week week had a 40% reduction in all-cause mortality because they're getting rid of all these toxins that are causing their health issues.
That's huge. I like to think of sauna— although I'm somebody who likes to get hot, I like to sweat, so I know that's a huge difference, some don't— but I think it's like a pampering kind of thing to me. I mean, maybe it's me, I imagine myself on a beach in Tahiti, that helps. But I would love to do that, and if I can say 40% lower all-cause mortality. Yes, please, I'll take that anytime.
Oh yeah, and you're killing all the cooties in your body. You're heating up your body, you're inducing a fever, so it kills off everything, you know, your Candida and parasites and all kinds of stuff as well.
So good.
Oh my gosh, thank you so much.
So again, let's say, where are we going to see the docuseries?
Yes, at theheavymovie.com. There's 10 episodes. And so tune in, it starts February 15th, 2024. It'll be available after that, but if you're listening right now, it starts February 15th. But you can join it every time, anytime. It's going till February 25th, and just, it's totally free.

We covered so much in this episode really about detox, and I think if you have heard about detox and the reason why you need detox prior to this, you know even a little bit more about detox. And listen, it's 2024 as we're releasing this live. It's still up to date no matter when you're listening. But in 2019, I was exposed to mold and then lived in it for about 4 months before I, I knew it was still going to be an ongoing problem, and I was able to move out at about 5 and a half months later. But that doesn't mean the damage wasn't done. And so I'm still learning more about detox and what I can do with mold. And mold and heavy metals are two of the probably forefront things to think about. In this episode, we talked about who needs detox, what kind of detox, and how much it costs you to do. And actually, it's very affordable, so be prepared for this one. We also talked about how If you're not detoxing, how heavy metals specifically—
and it—
we played essentially match.com between your toxic heavy metals and your hormones, whether it's thyroid, sex hormones, or your stress hormones, and which ones impact each other. There's a whole lot more in this episode as well as resources that we dropped about what to eat with your tuna. In order for it not to increase your mercury or heavy metal load and other good things. Tune in, don't miss this one.
