Power Plate Benefits | Prior Skeptic to a Believer
20 Oct 2023 · 25 min
In this Flipping 50 podcast episode, host Debra Atkinson begins by sharing a personal sleep aid recommendation—Blue Sky CBD sleep gels—to address migraine‑related sleep issues common during perimenopause and postmenopause. She then introduces Power Plate, the leading brand in whole‑body vibration (WBV) technology, and recounts her own transition from skepticism to advocacy. Debra outlines several research‑backed benefits of Power Plate use, especially for women over 40: a 138% increase in muscle‑fiber recruitment during exercises, a 50% rise in energy expenditure, up to a 500% boost in growth‑hormone secretion, and a 2% improvement in bone density after six months of thrice‑weekly 5‑minute sessions in postmenopausal participants. She discusses how WBV can aid recovery from hip/knee surgery, support those with arthritis, osteoporosis, frailty, or limited mobility, and enhance balance and stabilization for athletes such as golfers. Throughout, she provides practical guidance—suggesting short daily sessions, noting safety considerations, and offering a 20% discount code (FLIPPING50) for the Flipping 50 community via a dedicated link. The episode blends personal narrative, scientific citations, and promotional elements to encourage listeners to consider Power Plate as a supplemental tool for musculoskeletal health, hormonal balance, and overall vitality during midlife.

Real quick, before we dive into this episode, I have a little sleep secret I want to tell you about. Look, sleep is crucial for your fitness, but it's crucial for just plain old everyday life and function. And I find I sleep great unless I have a migraine. And I've had more than my fair share since perimenopause all the way through postmenopause. My secret weapon was Blue Sky CBD sleep gels. Each gel contains 25 milligrams of CBD and 25 milligrams CBN for deep restorative sleep. Something about it helps to reduce inflammation, which I believe for me was key in helping me get to sleep. But the biggest thing is so many of the over-the-counter solutions, whether for sleep or migraines, can ruin gut health, and liver health. Neither one of those did I want to be problematic for me. So this option is recommended by healthcare providers worldwide and backed by thousands of happy customers, many of whom come from our Flipping 50 community. There is zero THC, so it's non-habit-forming. It's made by a trusted family-owned company that we all can feel good about. Third-party tested for purity and potency. And if you're interested, you too can try a sample for just $6. But even better, you can get 30% off forever with discount code FLIPPING50. That's FLIPPING50. Just go to flipping50.com/blueskycbd. We'll put that link in the show notes and you'll find it everywhere on Flipping 50 at My Favorites. What are you waiting for? Good night. Surely by now you've heard of Power Plate. I discussed in a recent episode about whole body vibration, and well, Power Plate basically has cornered the market on research, design, and utility. Here's how much. Very recently we were in a group coaching call for our Stronger cohort, and someone said "Which Power Plate do you like?" And I had to say, "That's like asking which Kleenex do you use?" Meaning we are using the brand name in the ask about which one, which brand, and we don't even realize we're doing it. That means they have cornered the market. They got us, right? So literally, whole body vibration is the thing. That's the research is done on whole body vibration. Power Plate is a brand selling whole body vibration products. So that's how key and core they are and integral to the development of this product. They've done considerable amount of research, and I'm going to be sharing some of it with you. You want to know some sneaky good Power Plate benefits? Stay tuned. We're all looking for a shortcut. There are a few, and I, I would have at one point said there are few, right? But there are a few. In fact, maybe for women over 40, there are more than you think, because if the effort is there, the time doesn't always have to be greater. In fact, many times it shouldn't be. I'm Debra Atkinson. You're listening to Flipping 50, where I, yeah, I address your top struggles and concerns, but most of all, we're to inspire you, not to just talk about what's not working and, and supposedly or hopefully we fix it, give you a solution and some hope. But I want to elevate far more than that. We want to change your expectations and maybe your demands, be a little more high maintenance occasionally so that we get what it is that we need. I share what to eat, how to move, and how to change your mindset. So you can have the energy and vitality that you want, need, and deserve in this second and better half. And this is one of those ways. So if we were concerned and we're really talking about the physical you and the health, given that for your, your spiritual vehicle, your emotional vehicle, and the cognitive mental uniqueness, the problem-solving that you bring to this world, in order for those things to be delivered We do need to take care of this physical vessel that we live in. So we're talking about muscle, we're talking about bone, and we're also talking about how they relate to your brain health. This is really important. I was a skeptic, so I, I put this in the title for a reason: Prior Skeptic to a Believer. There were years ago when I would have said you know, this is not really a high priority. You know, I'm taking a better look at it and I currently have a power plate in my kitchen. Who's eating crow now, right? So who knew that this would be true? And what I want to point out to you is this is really, really important, and that is that we still have an order of priority. Okay, important that it's It's clear to you that you probably still need to be picking up weights from the floor. You need to be bending over and supporting yourself in stabilization as you lift things because we do it every day. You may say, "Oh, I can't do that because I have osteoporosis." Well, I guarantee you, you are probably doing it. And if you don't do it in a weight room where you are safely thinking about your form all the time in your daily activity of life. When you bend over not thinking about it, distracted by something else, that's when you'll be hurt. So it is important that we do some of these things and we order. What's the order of my importance? So would I, for most of you, go directly to power plate is the key for muscle and for bone? I would not. Do I think now though it is a viable extra or an and? I absolutely do, or trust me, I do not want a Power Plate in my kitchen. Okay. In fact, it's sitting where I thought the puppy might. That's how important it was. Here we go. Power Plate benefits number 1: stimulate more, like 138% more muscle fiber during workouts. Meaning you are, say, doing bicep curls, you're doing squats, you're doing some kind of a lunge, and maybe you have your back foot elevated on the Power Plate. A study done by the American Chiropractor has shown working out on Power Plate activates up to 138% more muscle fibers compared to a standard workout. So let's say I'm doing a squat with the same weight on the floor versus doing the weight on the Power Plate. 138% more muscle fibers. I like that number. I don't know about you, but 138%, yes please. The micro vibrations of a Power Plate activate more muscles. So there's a little bit more stabilization going on. Your whole body has to be just a little bit more awake, so you're waking up dormant muscles, and the additional recruitment of those fibers results in more calories burned too. So quite a bit, in fact. Power Plate benefit number 2: expend 50% more energy than normal workouts. This reverts back to number 1. What happens if you recruit more muscle fiber to fire doing the same activity? Will you expend more energy? From it. Now, you know, if you've been here for a minute, this is not calories in and calories out. You and I can both do math, and if it were calories in, calories out, we would be thin, all of us. But it's not. It never was. It never will be. And that's the truth. What it is is how the calories either you eat or you're burning or not burning in exercise. Impact and influence your hormones. It is hormones that determine fat storage or fat burning, and you can't be in both. So your body, when confused or stressed, will always default to fat storage. It's a protection mechanism. It's keeping you safe, although we know it doesn't work really well. According to a study in the European Association for the Study of Obesity, this same workout done say on the floor, just a stable floor, gym floor, or your kitchen depending on where you exercise, versus on the Power Plate Move, and that's just the model that I have, I'll show you, increased calories burned by 50%. Now, I, that's kind of curious, don't you think? You increase your muscle fiber stimulation by 138%, and only increase the calories burned by 50%. But the part of that is some of those muscles are just small muscles, they're stabilizers. So what else we are doing, and this is not even one of the benefits I'm including, so think of this as benefit 4.2, okay? And that is that you are also increasing your balance because you're, you're on these tiny micro vibrational pieces. You're on something that's moving. Now, it's not moving so much that it's throwing you off balance unless you have a poor or a vestibular system, uh, something is wrong with it. You've got inner ear or Meniere's issues, or you may get on the Power Plate and realize, I didn't know I had a problem, but I do have a slight problem. I don't have as good a balance as I thought. And that may be true, but you are going to benefit from that micro-awareness in those muscles. If you can stabilize and get really comfortable on the vibrational platform, when you're not on it, imagine how much more stable you are. So increase your calorie burned or energy expenditure during exercise by 50%. But all that even better when combined with this. Power Plate benefit number 3 is increased endocrine stimulation. Now, you know, endocrine system means your hormonal system. Growth hormone. You've heard me talk about that if you've been here for a minute. Growth hormone and testosterone together are both really key hormones for kind of pouring into the work you might have done with strength training and with eating protein. Those two things that increase your muscle protein synthesis when you do them separately, but when you do them together, even better. It's a higher peak. We get that lift The growth hormone is part of that hormone that seals the deal, and we release it in our deepest cycles of sleep. Anybody out there not having deep cycles of sleep, maybe your quality of sleep or the quantity of it or both, hopefully not for you, are a little bit less than they were, say, a decade ago or two. And by the way, if that's true for you, it doesn't have to stay that way. Don't accept it. And please don't say, well, that's always been true for me. I've been a poor sleeper my whole life. The more you say it, the more you make that your truth and you're owning it. You're living in there. And if you're talking crazy, I'm not going to get in there with you. But you can say, right now, this is my status, but I know I can improve it. That— those words, that language, that matters. That's going in the right direction. So We have a decline in our production of growth hormone just overall with aging. That occurs. That's complicated further for women in menopause who have, you know, a lower quality of sleep maybe than they have otherwise in their life. So our growth hormone, again, produced during those deepest cycles of sleep. So if you're sleeping with somebody who snores or waking yourself up with snoring, or it just waking yourself up with night sweats, or, um, you know, worst of all, I think, is most people are willing— most women are willing to leave their snoring husbands but not their old dogs. So, um, that one's a tough one to get through. Without adequate growth hormone, however, all the work that you put in in your strength training and even that conscientious eating of protein may not see It's just rewards. Good news is growth hormone is increased by up to— are you sitting down? Well, no, I hope that you're not. I hope you're standing. But increased by up to 500%. 500%. I know that sounds inflated, but it's not. This is not a typo. So you increase your growth hormone by 500% by doing workouts. With the Power Plate. Power Plate benefit number 4: boost bone density. Now, I'm releasing this podcast during Menopause Awareness Month, and the 20th of October is Osteoporosis Day. It's something we're all concerned about, and some of us have reached a point where I can't lift heavier because now I'm vulnerable, afraid of being injured, or I've got prior injuries or a condition, maybe, um, arthritis arthritis, whether it's osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, doesn't really matter at that point. If you can't lift heavy because of joint issues, what we have to do is find, okay, that's off the table. What else can we do? What can we focus on? So things like yoga, things like higher impact exercise, if you're able to do that. In fact, with any of those prior conditions, eating high protein, making sure you're consuming collagen, because it's certainly not going to hurt and it's gonna help other parts of your body if not your bone directly, but you also could be using Power Plate. And if you're not able to lift heavily, you may be able to use the Power Plate— I'm sorry, to your power point. Of course it slips off my tongue— it to your advantage. And you want to shift so that, you know, somebody who's able-bodied and strong and you can pick up and lift heavy weights and do all the things you may want to focus there on functional movement with a Power Plate if it works into your schedule, if it's convenient. But not necessarily do you need to invest in it. Someone who doesn't have the ability to lift heavy, I would suggest, is there a way you can get access to a Power Plate either at a gym or invest in one for your home use? And you're going to hear a little bit more specifics right now. One study featuring postmenopausal subjects, which is all we really care right? It's all about us. Had you— had the subjects using whole body vibration 5 minutes, 5 minutes, 3 times a week for 6 months, and it resulted in 2% increase in bone density. Now, if you compare that, you may say 2%, that's not much. 2% is a lot. So over the course of a year, if you didn't do anything or you didn't change what you were doing, you took a bone scan, you'd been doing a certain activity, if you keep doing that same activity and and make no changes, most likely you're going to decrease over the next year if you didn't have more stimulus for the muscle. And what you might decrease is anywhere between 1% to 3%. That's about average for losses. So let's say, no, you didn't even— it didn't even take a full year. It took half a year to increase by 2%. Let's just benefit of the doubt, a loss of 3% versus a gain of 2%. The difference is 5%. That's, that's more than significant. And that is something to pay attention to. Now, what I don't know and, and what I would hope that your next question is, is if someone continued to do that for another 6 months or another full year, would they continue to gain, say, another 2% each 6 months? That I don't have the answer to. I don't know that there are long-term studies yet out there suggesting, will there be a continued gain if there is the continued stimulus? It may be too early in the game to know that question. That's a great question to be asking, so hopefully you were. Um, but 5% difference in the right direction is exactly what you want for a 5th 15-minute-a-week investment, 5 minutes at a time, you definitely stop the scroll and start vibrating, right? So if you think you don't have time, my guess is you probably spend that much time on social media. You can— I can lose an hour scrolling through reels if I'm not careful. I don't know about you. I want you to listen to this, and this was something shared from Power Plate. This is not a Flipping 50 client, but this is powerful. Sherry said, I've been using my Power Plate Move for 3 months now. I've increased my bone density, lost body fat, and increased lean muscle mass. I'm 60 years old, 5 foot 5 inches, and 129. I'm very pleased with my results. My main health concerns are bone density losses. So if you are asking this question, who and when the benefits from Power Plate These are just a few, and this is not all-inclusive, but number one, if you were recovering, for instance, from hip or knee surgery, or you're right now currently a candidate for knee or hip replacement, then obviously, you know, moving very much is probably painful for you. And it's one of the best things we can do for our bodies is to keep moving, keep circulation going, and strengthen the muscles so that recovery is better. But you're, you're against this 6 of one, half a dozen of another because of the pain that you're going to incur. Power Plate may be a solution for that, either recovering from or preparing for. If you have limited ability to lift heavy weights due to arthritis or severe osteoporosis where you're really at high risk, again, a huge benefit. If you're already frail, you maybe have had a lot of bed rest, maybe you had long haul and you lost muscle and strength, your recovery from exercise could be faster. So there are ways to do that. Just say, you know, I wish I'd had that Power Plate with me the day or two right after we did the Grand Canyon. I would have sat on the floor at the foot of my Power Plate as if I were praying to it, yes, and I would have laid my cabs over the Power Plate and just turned it on in vibration. And that's what we've done with many athletes, for instance, in recovery from injuries that were very acute and traumatic, as well as just overuse syndromes and itises. Suffering from soreness due to exercise or to fibromyalgia also could be one. Athletes like golfers who are very aware of their bodies and need to stabilize, stabilize their spine in rotation, but also be very aware of where it is, can practice certain moves while on the Power Plate that enhance the stabilization work that's happening. So imagine if you're not a golfer, you can do this. If you're a golfer, you probably already know, you know, assuming a a stance as if you were gonna, you know, chip a 7-iron, or you were gonna, um, hit down the fairway with your 5-iron, or a 5-wood for that matter. You're going to have a slight hinge from your hip, right, with a nice long spine, slight arch in the back, but you're stabilizing. If you're not a golfer, a bent-over row, similar position. So you want to be at least 30 degrees down, so not upright but more over You're stabilizing your spine. But if you were to do that same move, or even the position without weight on a Power Plate, you're now stabilizing with much greater resistance. For somebody who also mentioned earlier is ill but well enough to do some movement, who has long haul or did and is still coming back from it, adrenal fatigue, preventing more exercise that might make it worse, you know, standing on a Power Plate for 2.5 to 5 minutes a day, much less stressful and yet still beneficial. So lots of really high interest. If I've piqued your interest, we're also going to put some images here, and I'm sharing some video clips as well on the YouTube channel and on various places on our social media. So I want you to make sure that you're paying attention. But if you're interested, I scored 20% off for our Flipping 50 community members. It's too soon for me to tell what benefit it's been for me for, say, bone density testing. Usually for me is on an annual basis, it's in March, and so I won't know, you know, for quite a while whether or not it's had an impact on me. But I can vouch for some other things, so happy to review and go over that with you. So we're going to put some notes in the show with other episodes that you might like about whole body vibration, bone density, and recovery, because it's a big month to cover all things regarding menopause and menopause fitness. So let's hit the science, let's update, upgrade your workout if you need to. And if the budget is right, the timing is right, and the need is there for Power Plate for you, it's fantastic.
