A short spoken excerpt from a YouTube video titled "Steve Young Accountability" (Fortitude 365) in which the speaker describes a leadership lesson: taking personal responsibility for mistakes, framing accountability as forward-looking ("it's my fault" followed by action to "fix this and go win the game"), and how that approach motivates team members to admit errors and improve.

It wasn't that I was trying to tell everyone what happened to blame it on them. It was more, these are the things that went wrong and some of them are my fault and some of them you did. So let's just talk about what went wrong. And what would happen is the guys, they would just not respond. And so what I learned is that if I would turn to my guys and say, look, I don't care what happened. I had the ball in my hand and now it's in their hand, it's my fault, alright, okay, it's my fault. But that's not the end. That's not all. We're now gonna go back out. We're gonna go out and fix this and go win the game, alright? That's what we're gonna do. And my gosh, if those guys didn't. Yeah, you know, I shouldn't have let my guy come in. Oh, I draw. I turned the wrong way. You know, I just learned that when accountability is in future fused to a situation, really good things happen.
