Nicole Johnsey Burke explains why she avoids growing potatoes in raised beds: they require significant space (about 1–1.5 sq ft per plant), have specific and heavy nutrient needs (prefer slightly acidic soil pH 5–6 and extra N-P-K and micronutrients), and they disturb companion plants because of hilling and disruptive harvest digging (tubers can extend 6–18 inches). She recommends alternatives: planting potatoes in the ground near flower beds or in wine-barrel containers (about two plants per ~2-ft barrel), and promotes her vegetable-gardening workshop and podcast resources.
