The One Question That Reveals Your Ideal Member
22 Oct 2026 · 10 min
In this solo episode of People Magic, Gina Bianchini shares a step‑by‑step framework for launching and monetizing a high‑value community. She argues that a community can start with just ten founding members, treating the first cohort as a mastermind or group‑coaching experience rather than a mass audience. The core of the strategy is to identify an "ideal member"—people who are in a transition and highly motivated—and to build an ambassador culture where every member actively nominates new, similarly motivated participants. Gina stresses the importance of a purpose‑driven pitch that promises transformation (the "best year ever") rather than a sales pitch or cult‑like appeal. She then moves to practical entrepreneurship advice: keep expenses low, maintain a reliable revenue stream, and have a six‑month emergency fund before launching a side‑hustle community. Time management tips include carving out a consistent daily hour for community work. Throughout, she highlights the role of community software (specifically Mighty Networks) in making the creation, engagement, and monetization of such communities increasingly accessible. The episode concludes with a motivational call to action, emphasizing that early, focused effort leads to rapid progress.

I cannot stress this enough. You can have an absolutely killer community by starting with 10 people. There's a few nuances in the whole strategy around launching where you start with your people, you are aiming to reach out to their people, and ultimately you have your community's people. The goal is that you have 10 founding members and your 10 founding members are the ones that you're launching with and focused on right out of the gates. The reframing is maybe that That first cohort is more like a group coaching experience or more like a mastermind than it is— some people, when they hear the term community, they think, oh my gosh, that has to be 1,000 people. It does not need to be 1,000 people to be a community and to be valuable to the members and the people that you're bringing together. I think fundamentally you wanna go back to who are you bringing together and why are you bringing those people together? Because if you feel like you have to convince somebody to join, I question whether or not they are your ideal members. Because by definition, your ideal members are in a transition and they are highly motivated. So you are looking for the people who are the most motivated to join your community, especially as part of your founding members. And one of the things I found is when we think about, well, who's your ideal member— I even heard this last week, somebody was like, oh, I wanna find regenerative thought leaders. And I was asking myself, what is a regenerative thought leader? And for example, if you're listening to this, you probably are like, I don't know what that means. And neither did I. The first question you've gotta ask yourself is, am I too broad or too general in my ideal member? And what can I do? So first of all, with regenerative thought leaders, I wanna get into, well, what is regeneration? What does it mean to be regenerative? That's the first definition that we've got to get more specific. And then a really great shorthand, and this is true for really anybody, is beginners, intermediate, advanced. And why is this important when you start thinking about even your, you know, your people and your people's people? It is not a requirement for you to ask every single person who you are bringing into your initial cohort, your initial 10 founding members, to also bring in members right off the bat. I think it's more important, though, that you understand why your community is so valuable to people and why it's so important to those first 10 people or those first 50 people Your big purpose is there to help somebody else achieve results and transformation that they can't get on their own. Taking yourself out of it, the pitch is, we're going to build something amazing together. It's not about you joining my cult. It's not about me trying to sell you something. This is about that bigger purpose. This is about why you wanna join. And the why you wanna join is so that we can create our best year ever. Well, what's our best year ever? That's why somebody's joining. And that's the transition from a beginner to somebody who is a leader informing and impacting the future. That is always a good place to start as you think about building this kind of people magic relationship-driven business that not only can bring tremendous profitability, but also— Purpose. Significant impact. So when you think about when to ask somebody for nominations, when to ask somebody for other people, I want you to come from a place of so that we can— I want to be able to offer more and more people their best year ever because they are my ideal member. They are people who are in a transition. Figuring out what that is is going to give you such a better foundation to invite in your founding members and create what I like to call an ambassador culture, where from day one, it's everybody in the community's job to take notes on, think about who else would be phenomenal to bring into our community, to grow our community of people on the same path. Seeking out their best year ever so that they can achieve results and transformation that are absolutely impossible to do as an individual or do in the course of ordinary life. The reality of the world that we live in today is that it is super dynamic, and it feels at times like the world is accelerating, and you're not sure from one day to the next what you can count on. So I feel very passionately that software, software like what we're building at Mighty Networks, needs to play a role that makes that moment where you want to become a solo entrepreneur or a business owner or a creator, not just possible, but easy. And we each and every month are getting closer and closer to that promise, to that reality. So the good news is. The ability for you to create that community that actually you can monetize is getting easier and easier to grow. And then it will get easier and easier to both engage and continue to make more and more money from it. What's the right balance between working for other people and investing time and energy into creating your own business for your own economic opportunity? Here's what I would say. Is start by making sure that your expenses are as absolutely as low as possible. I know that this is basic math, but if you are dealing with a period of uncertainty, the more that you can control your own destiny— I talk about this from the perspective of being an entrepreneur and having been an entrepreneur for a very long time. There have been some dark dark days, days where I wasn't sure how I was gonna pay my bills. And so you want to start by making sure that you've got a handle on your expenses. The second step is if there is a revenue stream that you can build, whether that's as a consultant, that's as an employee in another company, go ahead and do that. The idea that you're gonna just cold turkey other revenue streams that you can generate or other income streams that you can generate. Be smart. Make sure you've got that 6-month emergency fund and that you are in the strongest position that you can be in, in order to launch your own business. Which is also why what I like to, to do is encourage people to have that revenue stream helping people, being able to offer them value in important ways, and then Create your community on the side. So what does it look like to create something on the side or have a side hustle? Number one, you want to carve out time on your calendar every day for it. So if you have the most energy in the morning, then get up an hour earlier to be able to invest in your side project, in your community that you are building. So now that you have the lowest cost base that you can possibly have and you've freed up an hour a day, now you have the time and the space to start to make an ongoing investment in that side hustle. And if you just follow people magic, start with people in a transition, give them their best year ever. Pull those 2 things together to create your big purpose or what you can go out and start talking to people about. I or we bring together, and then who you're bringing together, those people, your ideal member who's in a transition, so that we can get practice, get your reps in around talking to people about your big purpose, what you're building, why you're building it. In every single conversation, you are going to learn something that if you don't Make the time, move from a place of fear and uncertainty into focus and action, you just won't learn as fast. And somebody just shared this with me on a project that I've been working on that I was procrastinating and kind of afraid of. And they said to me, action begets action. The hardest step you're gonna take is the first one or the first 5. But pretty soon after a few weeks, just a few weeks, the things that felt really hard become easy. And actually even better than easy, you just stop thinking about them. You've changed your life just with that, with that small shift. Action begets action. I'm Gina Bianchini. This is People Magic, and I will see you in the next episode. Woo!
