But it's funny, there's a lot of people that when we talk about goals that get all upset and they think goals are stupid. They think they're hokey. And so we change the word goals to target. Maybe if we call them something different, they will become a little more friendly and a lot less threatening. It amazes me how many people, when I go speak in front of large audiences, when I ask who has their goals written down and on their person, maybe 10% of the people do. So this is not a lecture, right? I'm not here to lecture you each and every day. I'm here to. To open your mind, to open your heart, to open your attitude towards all the different topics that we've talked about, whether it's humor, whether it's empathy, whether it's challenge. Well, today we're going to talk about this thing called goals. Why? Because I know that the most successful people in the world, the happiest people in the world, the people who have the most vitality, oftentimes have goals that are written down, goals that they could refer to targets that they can aim at. And they're not wandering aimlessly through life. I believe that you can see them, right? There are people who are actual zombies that walk amongst us. It's a beautiful sunny day here in Broad Ripple, and I know as I take a big walk on the Monon a little later today, I will see people milling around. And you can tell there's they're zombies. You can look at them. They're just like, empty inside. They're just kind of wandering through life. And guys, that's not the way I want to see my good friends and my followers at the Attitude Nation roll through life. And so I just wanted to present this as hopefully a attitude action for you. We're down to, like, we only got, what, four more days and we're done. And I want you to really think about it. Do you have goals and do you have goals in writing? If you do have goals, I'd love to see what they are, put them in my comments box. But if they're not in writing, maybe the attitude action is very simply this. I'm going to write down three goals that I will accomplish by the end of June. And those could be many different things. The definition of goals. I always like to start with definitions. If you hadn't figured it out, goals are simply the object of a person's ambition or effort. It's the object, right? It's the end target of a person's ambition or effort. Are you a person of ambition? Are you a person of effort? One of our keynotes is the secret is effort. I can't go into that, that's a 50 minute speech. But I want you to ask yourself, on a scale of 1 to 10, how ambitious am I? And on a scale of 1 to 10, how much effort am I putting into my life, my business, my relationships, everything that results from that? It's an aim or a desired result. I sure hope that you're aiming for something. I sure hope that you have a desired result. Because if you, I know you'll hit it. Some people have a little question about what does ambition mean? And I think I'm going to do the attitude of ambition tomorrow. But the definition of ambition is simply a strong desire to do or achieve something, right? So it's a strong desire to obtain the object. That's why ambitions in the definition of goals and it typically requires determination and hard work. So the question is, on a scale of 1 to 10, how ambitious am I? How much effort am I putting into my life, my business, my relationships? Do I have a strong desire that fuels me and do I want to achieve something? And if you do, congratulations. I'm telling you, your life is getting full. And what I'm hoping over the next four or five minutes you start thinking about, gosh, you know what, I don't have goals in writing or I don't have targets in writing. But maybe, maybe I'll give it a shot. And I think you'll find that your attitude will change. You will find more vitality, more energy. You will find more creativity in your brain as you search for what you desire. Look at the mind is a goal seeking device. Sometimes you don't even need to write it down. Hell, I just would be happy if you got a goal. And my guess is a lot of you have goals because you're on here. But maybe it's there's somebody in your life that you know who's down, depressed, misguided, that could use help. But you know to say, hey, do you want to go set some goals? That sounds really hokey. So maybe talk about targets or directions. But I know this, if you have something in your mind and it's in your mind, it does Drop down to your heart and your mind is a goal seeking device, whether you want to or not. If you truly set a goal, whether it's in writing or not, your mind will push you towards that end. I love what Steve Garvey said. He said you have to set goals that are almost out of reach. If you set a goal that is attainable without much work or thought, you are stuck with something below your true talent and potential. I think one of the biggest, most fun things in goal setting when I work with teams and companies is we do the 100 impossible goals. One attitude action, one attitude assignment that I'll give you. Just write down five goals in your life that you do not think you can attain. And then I want you to go back in 10 years and go, wow, that actually happened. I've done this in my life. I said, there's no way I'll be able to do some of the goals that I had. But I can tell you what, the mind's a goal seeking device. You want to have some fun today? Go sit out in the sun, drink a couple beers, Write down five goals that you have that you go, there's no way in what the world I'll ever be able to attain them. And you know what? You will. Bill Copeland said, the trouble with not having goals is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score. I mean, just think about that. Are you aimless? Are you ever able to score? Do you say to yourself, why don't I accomplish what others accomplish? Doesn't it drive you insane to see that people with the same amount of time in a day accomplish so much more than you? Or maybe you accomplish so much more than them, depending on your relationship? Well, I'm guessing that's probably because of direction and goal setting. The last one is from the great Lou Holtz, which he said, if you're bored with life, you don't get up every morning with a burning desire to do things. You don't have enough goals. And I think the biggest problem we have, when I look at attitude, when I talk to people, when I coach people, they go, glenn, I just got no fire, I got no juice, I got no vitality. And you know what? They usually don't have goals. They don't, they don't have something that they're going after. So I want you to think about it. I want you to hopefully grab three goals and say, you know what? By the end of this quarter, June 30th, I'm going to set those goals and then set goals. Three goals, maybe for the end of the year, probably. If you're watching this, you do have goals. You don't even need this talk. But if you do like it, hit me with a like. Please share this with somebody that might need it. I want to just talk about the eight areas of goals which everybody does. The wheel of, right? The wheel of life. Personal development, health and fitness, family and friends, hobbies and passions, career, adventure and travel. You may have to play this one back, but if you write those eight things down, that's a great place to start. And when we talk about life goals, which are a little different, I want you to write these words down. Marriage and family harmony. Super, super thing to have goals for proper mindset and balance in life. Commitment to improve physical health. That's a repeat from the one above. Career passion and personal satisfaction. Empathy and gentleness. That was day number 15 on empathy. Financial stability. A lot of us are extremely stressed out because of our finances right now. Goal setting and finances is a big stress reliever. It doesn't make things so huge and it will help you calm when it comes to these things called finances. And last is service and social responsibility. Am I going to be somebody that understands booster number 10 to be a part of something bigger than me? Ladies and gentlemen, this was your goal setting attitude workshop today. I hope you enjoyed it. I hope you always remember that we cannot win in life, we cannot win in business, and we cannot win in our relationships unless we win in our mind first. That's why you guys come to the University of Attitude every day. I want to thank you so much for joining me and I will see you tomorrow when we talk about the attitude of ambition.
