Hello, Hello. What is up Attitude Nation? Glen Bill checking in on day number six of Attitude Awareness Month. I hope we get some people on the on the hopper to our live show today, which is a show that I think everybody can relate with and we'll just give it a few seconds here to get our people on board across all of our platforms. Again, you can find us at the University of Attitude Attitude Movement, you can find us on YouTube, Periscope and I post to LinkedIn afterwards. So looks like we got some people populating, which is great. We're here to talk about the attitude of communicating, communicating with a positive attitude. How many of us have an issue communicating with a positive attitude or more importantly, maybe even listening with a positive attitude? And so I just thought it would be a good thing for us to do as a goal today that everybody, we communicate from now until the time we go to bed, we really try to make it a positive experience. And I think communicating at a positive level really starts with our expectation and it really starts with not letting negative people and negative communicating people dictate how we want to receive and share information. The bottom line is communication is simply an act of transferring information from one person to another. Pretty simple, pretty general. But you know what? We all have two things and problems. We all have two things in common. We have relationships which deal in communication and we have problems in common which a lot of times can be a result of our communication. So when we think about the rest of our day to day, when we think about going through the rest of our month, let's make a concerted effort to be a positive communicator. And I'm going to be giving you three different steps that I hope will help you become a more positive communicator. Are you a person that whenever people see you coming they go, oh my God, I don't think I want to talk to this person now. None of us want to admit that, but certainly there are people that don't necessarily like communicating with us. And on the other foot, is there people in your life that you go, oh my lord, I don't know that I'm going to be able to handle them. Here they come. And I'm going to have to start communicating. So look at communication between two people. But more importantly, I want to talk about effective communication and it's defined as the ability to convey information to another person effectively and efficiently. Do you understand that there are some people that can't efficiently communicate? They tend to go on and on and on to make their point. Now sometimes part of bad communication is people much like me and maybe much like you, have a problem with people that give us too many details. So brevity is something when we talk about communication that can be a very, very positive thing for people. And my question to you is, are you somebody that can effectively communicate and efficiently communicate? Are you using too many words to get to your point? Are you losing people as you're trying to explain things? And certainly body language and nonverbal communication will help you figure that out. And so when we talk about this thing called nonverbal communication, this is what we need to work on. This is what I'm hoping those of us that are engaged in this one month exercise together and at least for today say, how can I more effectively communicate? And I want to just give you some words for effective communication which is clarity and being concise. Friendliness. How friendly are you on a scale of 1 to 10, what is your friendliness level? I would love you to post on a scale of 1 to 10 how friendly you are or how friendly people think you are. I would love to see you post in our comments as well. And I'm going to turn on our chat just in case. It looks like we got a few. Hello Glenn, I don't know who my Facebook user is, but hello. And if you're on here watching, Post or comment 1to10, how friendly am I communicating with confidence? How confident are you when you're talking to somebody? You know, nobody wants to speak and communicate with a wimpy communicator. And again, that's probably a lack of self confidence. But if you are somebody that doesn't feel confident communicating, I'm going to give you some thoughts on how to increase that confidence. Empathy is a very overused word. A lot of people don't know how to describe empathy. But are you able to put yourself in the other person's shoes when you're communicating? Are you really, really able to put yourself in their shoes and have the open mindedness and respect for that other person that what they're saying, whether it's true or not, they believe it to be true. That's what empathy is. It's when you go, there's no way this person's true, this person's totally wrong. This person's annoying. But to really, really take the time to understand how to get in their shoes. So I'm going to give you three quick strategies. Number one, you got to listen to yourself. To become a positive communicator, you really need to first examine how are you at listening? How are you at communicating? What words are you using? Use words like always and never. Always and never. Not good communication words. Do you say, well, listen, this is what I believe. Or do you say, you know what? Here's what I consider. Or in my opinion, or as far as I can tell, there are words that we use that absolutely crush communication. Like when you walk in and say, what's wrong with you? You can say, what's wrong with you? But you know what? There are people that are going to go, hold on, back off. I want you to think about the first words that come out of your mouth when you're engaging with people for the rest of the day and actually for the rest of the month. What tone of voice do you use? How were you acting? And what was your body language? And is there a better way to choose different words that may not put people so on guard? Right. Instead of saying, what's wrong with you? You could maybe say, is there something bothering you? Two different results, Two different ways to receive what's happening. Number two is become a safe listener. I really think it's important that when you're communicating with people that they believe it's a safe place. I think you need to remove your distractions, get rid of the nose and phone disease. I mean, it's crazy. And I know many of you have kids that got their phone and you're talking to them and they're doing this. Totally not cool, right? So being a safe listener has to, number one, deal with empathy. Number two, saying look at whatever you tell me is cool. Right? It's safe. I'm a safe person. Don't worry about it. And it's being totally focused, making that eye contact and having that empathy that we talked about it. Show them with your body that you're interested in what's being said. Look and consider your body language with the next conversation that you have and focus on becoming and accepting your partner, if you will, or the person you're talking to, their point of view. It shows simply respect. Right? People feel so disrespected when you're talking over them, when you're Answering before they get to finish what they're saying, even though I know you really feel like you need to, you know. The third step is that researchers say that it takes a large quantity of compliments and positive statements ranging from 5 to 23, to counteract a negative ego blow that you may have been given somebody. Are you a person that likes to criticize other people? Right. Whether you know it or not, or to judge other people, it's all part of us. Like, we all do it and sometimes we don't mean to do it. But you may have somebody very close to you. It could be one of your children that you want to correct and you want to help them. And everybody goes, oh, I just want to help them. Well, you know what? It's not helpful. All they see it is as a criticism. And if you're struggling in your personal relationships, especially at home, and you deliver the blow, deliver the criticism. You're going to have to compliment that person 5 to 23 times in order to overturn it. So Global Attitude Awareness Month. I want you to become aware of, am I empathetic? Am I a safe listener? And what is my compliment to criticism ratio? I hope that you will improve that and I hope that this little 10 minute ditty was good for you. I want to thank you for continually tuning in. Thank you for liking this. Thank you for sharing this. Please share this out. If this needs to go to somebody that needs to learn how to communicate with the people that they love, please check us out at the Get Attitude podcast right there and know that we always have a positive message every single week coming to you. I hope this helped and I hope your relationships, your life and your communication become more positive.
