Learn more when we start comparing our life to someone else's life. So if you compare my life to someone else, they might look at me and go, well, what has she done? But then you compare my life to another person and I look like the most successful person out there. And at the end of the day, we can't do that. You are enough. You are enough.
Yet attitude means how can I proactively change the way I think? How can I proactively increase my life? How can I proactively create better relationships and better work situations for me to enjoy it? Hello again, everybody, and welcome to the Gap, the Get Attitude Podcast. The Gap Bridging the gap from who you are to who you want to become and from where you are to where you want to go. Hello, my name is Lynn Bill, founder of the University of Attitude, keynote speaker and author of the book the ABCs of Attitude. I've been fortunate enough to help tens of thousands of people Get Attitude. Attitude, the secret formula to success in your life and in your business. And this podcast, it will help you get yours. So let's get some. Hello again, everybody. I want to welcome you to the Get Attitude Podcast. Today we are with the one and only Susan McLean. Susan is the founder of the Natural Success Institute. Susan got some attitude. She has just whoop, whoop. What's up, Susan? Welcome.
Thanks. I'm so excited to be here.
All right, I'm excited to have you. Susan's been a longtime friend of mine. As with most of our listeners, Susan got some attitude and switched careers. And recently, and when I heard about this thing called the Natural Success Institute, which you can Google it and you can hit it on Facebook, I said, I got to know what this girl's doing because Susan was with a company with me for about 11 years and built an incredible presence and really, really grew the company. But you know what? She felt unfulfilled. She felt like there was more for her. And my guess is people who tune in to the Get Attitude Podcast much faster feel the same way. They're stuck in a job, they're stuck in a relationship, they're stuck inside themselves going, I think there's more for me. I think there's more than what is just inside of these walls. And Susan's going to talk to us a little bit about today. How she got in touch with that feeling, how she left what most people would consider a dream job, amazing job, and then to say, I'm just gonna start it on my own. So, Susan, welcome. I'm so happy to have you.
Thank you. I'm so excited to be here. So you know what? You hit on a nerve of mine, actually. We talk about people who feel like there might be more for them. And that's really the difference between left and right brain, right? So your right brain is responsible for right now. Your left brain is past and future. And your left brain is usually the part of you that tells you, you know what? Don't make a leap now. Don't make a change. One day, maybe. Remember what happened the last time you did that? It didn't work out so well. Your right brain is the one, is the part of you going, do it now. Start the business, you're awesome. But we usually don't listen to it. We listen to that left brain. And more people need to listen to the right brain saying, you're awesome, you've got attitude, go do your thing. And that's what I did.
Why don't people listen to their right brain?
You know, I think it's conditioned from just when we're children. So we reach for the cookie jar, we reach for the hot stove, and it's slapping the hand. And, you know, just your parents trying to keep you safe. Your body's designed to keep you safe. Your body exists to keep you safe and keep you alive. So a lot of the habits that we acquire over our lifetime, smoking, eating, not so great, right? Like, I had pie for breakfast this morning.
Yeah, congratulations, I did.
I'm a little embarrassed to tell you that now, but I did. But you know those habits that we have, our body keeps. Keeps us going. It keeps us with, hey, you need another cigarette? Hey, you need another piece of pie for breakfast?
Right?
Because that's what we've always done and we've always survived. So it's just that habit that our body and our minds get addicted to.
So, Susan, we are here today to talk about attitude booster number three, which is believe in you. And I felt like you would be an appropriate guest because it had to take a lot of self belief, right? And moving from a corporate structure into your own business. And I know that there's people that are listening here that are going I really should open my own business. And so what I want to talk about and help people get to know is, number one, just tell us a little bit about your background, who you are, and what is your attitude, and who helped shape your attitude.
Ah, that's so great. So let's talk my background. So I've been in sales and sales leadership for. For a really long time. I won't go into how many years, but a long time. And really, if I look back at my career, starting as an agent and then asked to be a trainer, asked to be a real estate coach, and then I was offered a position in management, offered a position as a regional vice president, then vice president of a company, the one thing that I've seen, the one recurring theme, is that I never tried to climb that corporate ladder. But studying mindset, meditation, power of the brain, for 15 years, I've learned that the natural principles of success, if you apply those, your life will turn out and, you know, things will always work out for you. Oh, you had a. I've got to give a shout out to Lori.
Yes. Somebody.
Wilson. Lori Wilson. She was a recent podcast. So we are mantra sisters. I just need to give her a shout out. So my main affirmation is everything always works out for me. And she said that on your podcast. And I just listened to it. I know. So we're mantra sister.
That is actually today's release. Yeah, she was just recently.
I listened to it this morning.
You were on top of it.
Yeah, I know.
That's my girl. Yes.
Yes. I loved it. It was a great podcast. But everything always works out for me. And I had that belief. And you talk about attitude and where it comes from. Some of us are lucky enough to get it from our parents and our friends and the people that we surround ourselves with. And some of us aren't that lucky. But it's our responsibility. We are 100% responsible for our life and everything in it. So. So if you're not getting that from the people that are around, you surround yourself with different people. Go listen to a great Get Attitude podcast.
Right, right, right, right.
Talk to some other gappers. There you go. And get it from them. But I think I was lucky enough to get it from my family. And my parents are positive people. Everything always kind of works out for us as a family. But then I didn't just stop there. Right. It's constant learning and constant growing and pushing yourself and surrounding yourself with great people like you who push you to do better.
Cool. So we don't ask this of everybody. But I know you're good, so you're going to be able to handle it. And you've been through some of my stuff before. When we think about that pivotal question that we talk about in the book, in times of great stress and in times of great decision making in your life, which you were just there like literally six days ago or whenever, you just left, what is the one question you find yourself? What is your pivotal question? What's that question that plays in your mind that never stops going when you're experiencing the world? Do you know what that would be?
So, I mean, there's a lot of questions in there, right. Like, it's probably a really scary place that no one wants to be inside my head. But the main thing that I'm responsible for is making sure that whatever is playing, whatever that track is playing, that it's a positive one. So I think the main question I've probably always grown up with is, am I good enough? Right, right. And that I think we all kind of ask it, but when we start comparing ourselves to others, the game's over at that point. Right. And that's where, you know, when we talk about success and what natural success is, when we start comparing our life to someone else's life. So if you compare my life to someone else, they might look at me and go, well, what has she done? But then you compare my life to another person and I look like the most successful person out there.
Yes.
And at the end of the day, we can't do that. You enough. You are enough. Just where you're at, you're enough. And so you have to stop asking yourself, you know, am I good enough for this? Am I good enough for that? You are good enough. You've got to believe it, you know.
And I think, Susan, that that hits on what we talk about, the three biggest mistakes of attitude. The C mistake can't conundrum. Are you focusing on what you can't be, what you can't do and what you can't have, or what you don't have? Or are you focusing on what you can be, you can do and what you can have?
Yeah.
And that gets into this thing that we call self belief. We are here, it's attitude booster week number three or month number three with believe in you. Talk to me a little bit about focusing on what you can do, you can be and you can have. But I know you have some really powerful information on what stops most of us. Like with your question, am I good enough? Which is called limiting self Belief. Talk me through a little bit about what you work with your clients on that. What's the platform there?
So first of all I want to go back to the first part of your question. You know, so a lot of times we look at our life and we think, well, why was I born in this dinky little town? And we have to stop asking why and we have to start asking how. So how can I? If you think you're born in a dinky little town, how can you get out and experience life the way you want to experience it? Sure, you know, why was I, why did I get the big bones from my parents? You know, stop asking that and ask, you know, how can I live the life that I want to live? But you're right, it does come down to those self beliefs. And that was a big, big thing that I saw. You know, big issue that I saw in my corporate job is that, you know, we talk about goals, goals and you know, goals all the time. It's goals, goals, goals and that's great. I love goals, I love big goals. But if we're not talking about the beliefs that someone has primary before we even start at all to talk about the goals, that those goals are not going to mean anything. So you have to worry and you know, get your mindset and figure out what those limiting beliefs are and truly take some time and go through them one by one and start eliminating those, those limiting self beliefs before you can really start sitting down and talking about the big goals and the vision that you have. Whether it's for your life or for your job or if you're the owner of a company, you've got to address the beliefs before you address the goals.
And then how do you do that? Is there a process that you go through? I know at the nsi, I think you talked about there's a three step phase on what it means to be naturally successful. I'd love to hear a little bit about those three things and what you're talking to your clients about. How do you unravel those self limiting beliefs and then re anchor them and then tell me a little bit about those three phases of success that you like to teach.
So most of our self limiting beliefs, our limiting beliefs are things that we don't even realize are our self talk. You know, so it's the things that we heard when we were little. So you were teased on the playground. You know, I've got a story, maybe not appropriate to share but you know, so like I had kids that would make fun of me Right. So I'll share it. He can edit, right?
Yeah, we're good.
So I've always had a big butt. Okay. So, I mean, even when I was little, so.
Which is now very popular.
Yes. Yes, it is. Apparently, people are, like, getting butt implants. I'm like, geez. But anyway, so he can edit this out.
No, it's good. It's raw and real, man. To get attitude.
I already know. Oh, my God. It's already in.
It's already in.
Okay. So anyway, but so people that, you know, the kids, the boys would make fun of me for it. And so it's. You know, those are the beliefs. Like, oh, my gosh, I'm fat. I'm not good enough. I'm not pretty enough. I'm not skinny enough. But those limiting beliefs are things that we most likely don't even remember, you know, when something happened to us. So we kind of have to dig deep. Right? It's going into, like, who you are as a person. Listening to yourself, getting quiet and listening to yourself before you can really start to understand what those beliefs are before, then we can go back and try to change them.
And you're a trained meditation coach, correct? Yeah. What?
Only talk to her because.
I love it. I had to do it. I had to do it, Jason. Oh, my God. There you go. There's your.
There's my song. I'm telling you, can't play too much.
Cause we'll get flagged in Pedro. They'll get flagged, and we'll get shut down. You're paying the fine, bro. Okay.
And it may have something to do with, like, the pie that I eat for breakfast.
I don't know. That could be it. I want to. Or not digress. I want to get back on track with you being a meditation coach. When you talk about digging in and listening to yourself, do you find that you do that through meditation? And is that a service you work with people on, too?
Yes. So. Really? So I've developed something called journaling meditation. And really what it is is it's getting out. So what's the number one? I'm gonna put you on the spot here. Yes. Number one reason why you hear people.
Say they can't meditate because their mind's too racing.
They can't shut their mind off. And so, number one, you're not supposed to. Right. It's like telling yourself not to blink. And when I said that, you probably blinked.
I did.
Right. So your mind is supposed to think thoughts, and that's okay. But if you journal before you sit down to meditate. And there's a specific set of questions that I have people ask themselves and journal about before they then start to meditate. But if you can get that out, what happens is you sit down and your brain goes, finally. I've been trying to get through to her all day, but she wouldn't stop. So, yeah, don't forget, your mom's birthday is next week. And then, oh, you didn't call Glen Bill back. And then you need to go do this. And this meeting's coming up and you're not prepared for it. So all of these things that your brain has been trying to get into your conscious brain, which is only 5% of your brain, by the way, all of these things surface. And so if you journal first, you can work through them, then you can meditate.
That is really good. That's great advice for our people. And I do that every Sunday night. I actually break my life into four different parts, and I write down the 10 most important things that I need to get through in the week. And what's fascinating is I looked at that list this Monday, and I didn't do One of the 40 things I was supposed to do. Right. And I'm guessing that's because you don't stop, take your time to focus on it. You just go, go, go.
And that's the third element of natural success is tranquility. So the three elements of natural success is positivity, sustainability, and tranquility. So positivity is really. It's thinking positive thoughts. Right. It's, you know, but it's understanding that you can control your thoughts. And most people, whatever, you know, whether it's good or bad thought enters their mind. They kind of sit down, they strap in, they put their hands up, and they're. They're going for the ride. So having a positive life and embracing that positivity is really changing how you think and from what level you think.
Right.
So that's the positive.
It's dedicating. Dedicating yourself to seeing the good in everything.
Yes, exactly. Yeah. But that's where. Changing the level that you're thinking, that's where that comes from.
Sure.
So then the sustainability piece is really living a big life. It's getting out of your comfort zones, doing things that maybe others wouldn't expect, like maybe quitting your job, you know, great job, you quit it. But, you know, it's living a big life, and it's having a balanced life, not only for yourself, but for the greater good of our planet and everyone on it. And then the tranquility piece is listening to a higher power. So listening to your intuition, to God, to the universe. They're always trying to talk to you and help us on this journey of life, but we're so busy, we don't stop to, you know, to listen to that guidance. And I'm sure. So I have this mental image of God looking down on me, going, really, Susan, I've been trying to tell you this, and you're not listening to me, but you're gonna go down that path anyway. But it's understanding how to listen to that higher power.
Yeah. And people don't listen when it's all said and done.
Well, they're too busy. They're multitasking. Right.
Well, and they're also overburdened with messaging. I mean, I think we're getting 20,000 messages a day in our life right now.
Yes. Yeah.
15 or 18,000 of which are negative input.
Right. And it's crazy. And so we don't. But we never turn it off. We never take vacation. You know, we're. Oh, I'm just gonna check my email really quickly.
Yeah.
I'm just gonna respond to one message. But then we're posting pictures on social media. You know, we're never really away and disconnected.
What would you do if President Trump called you and said, hey, I need you as a coach from the Natural Success Institute? What? President Trump. Congress. What if you could go to Washington, D.C. what would be the first one or two exercises you might give them? Or what would. What would. I mean, that's a big one. But let's just say it happened. You got $100,000 contract, and they go, fix this, Susan.
Okay.
What would you. Maybe. Where would you start with them?
I'd start with tranquility. Right. So listen to yourself and listen to.
He would go, oh, my God, Higher power.
Yeah. Listen to your intuition versus. And I can't even imagine, I mean, truly can't imagine having so many people that I report to and am responsible for my actions. But I think I would start with that tranquility piece of just be quiet and just listen to your intuition.
And that gets us into chaos.
Right.
If we want to throw ourselves or spin ourselves into a whole hell of a lot of chaos, don't listen to your intuition.
Don't listen. Right. Yeah. Just keep living life the same way you are and stay chaotic. There you go. And see how it works.
Let me ask you this. What's your definition of attitude? And what does attitude mean to you?
I knew you Were going to ask me this question. Sorry, here's the thing I'm not prepared for.
There's no wrong answer. But we want your gut right?
So I really think that attitude is the ability to do absolutely anything that you want to in your life. Truly, if you have the right attitude, you can do it. Absolutely anything. Right. You get rid of the limiting beliefs and all the, you know, I'm not good enoughs and all of that.
Right?
Yeah. What was second?
Now, the great Zig Ziglar will tell you that a good attitude will help you do a lot things better than a bad attitude, but it won't let you do everything. I mean, you know, if I wanted to dunk a basketball, no matter how good my attitude is, I ain't gonna dunk a basketball.
But you can find a way. Can you get a chair?
I can get a chair.
You can. Do you believe you can get it done? How can you get.
So, yeah, finding answers might be, you know, do you have the ability to find an answer? And if you're listening to this podcast, walking on the beach, sitting in a car, sobbing, because you're at a point in your life going, what is going on with me? The great thing to know that Susan brings to us is that there are answers out there.
If you just look, the answer to everything is inside yourself. I 100% believe that. But the problem I think that we run into is, you know, let's say we have a bad marriage, and people go to Google and they start Googling, well, how do I have a better marriage? Instead of sitting down with their spouse looking them in the eye and saying, okay, how can we have a better marriage? Or listening to yourself and saying, you know, how can I be a better husband or a better wife? Everything is inside yourself. But we don't. We don't take the time to listen.
What do you think? We talked about the three layers. How did you come up with this thing called the Natural Success? So why the word natural? What does that mean? And maybe you've already covered it. I don't know. But, like, what was the thought there?
So natural. Okay, so really, the true story is.
That'S what I'm looking for.
Okay, so I'll tell you. So I played around with natural versus balanced. Right? Because it's all about balance. Life is about balance. It's about eating pie for breakfast, but not every day. Right. But it was easier to say Natural Success Institute than Balanced Success Instrument.
I think it's a better name, personally.
Thank you. I appreciate that.
I think you Picked the right one.
But really natural comes from the fact that every area of your life is in alignment and balanced. So I think we talked earlier today about the poker chip theory. A lot of people live their lives thinking that they're only given so many poker chips. And so for me to be successful in my job, I need to take some of my poker chips away from my relationships or my finance pile or another pile and put them into my job. But there is an unlimited amount of poker chips available for our life. But if we don't know that, we don't live our life like that. So that's how I kind of look at having that natural success. Meaning you have an equal stack of poker chips in every area of your life.
Right. And you just got to know how to manage that and yes.
Yeah. And it comes down to the tools, the tools that we talk about and.
Teach when it comes to techniques for self belief. Do you have any thoughts on, like, if somebody's listening and it's like, how do I believe in myself, Glenn? What if I were to come to you and say, susan, I don't believe in myself, fix me, what would your advice be?
I can't fix you, Glenn. You're too far gone. No. So it really comes to discovering and determining your purpose for being on this earth. Right. So I firmly believe that we are all here to accomplish something. We all have God given talents and gifts. And once we uncover those, our life becomes easier. Our life becomes more meaningful. We don't get tired because you're on, your soul is on fire for what you, you know, what you're doing in life every single day. So if you don't believe in yourself, what are you doing every day? Are you living that purpose and that power that you're supposed to be here? So it's really, that's where I would start with you, Glenn, is let's determine your purpose and passion for being on the ear.
I love it. So if you guys want to engage with Susan, hit her on her Facebook page at naturalsuccessinstitute. Right. On Facebook. Or go to thenaturalsuccessinstitute.com and you can kind of engage with Susan and see what she's up to and get little practical tips. I know that you just posted 5 Ways to Relieve stress, I think.
Oh yes, yes. There's a little freebie on the website.
There it is right there.
Oh yeah, the one minute stress buster.
Why don't you walk us through that just very quickly and what it means to you, those five Little tips.
So stress is a huge problem. Right. It's a $300 billion issue for corporate America. So from lost work days to poor performance, it is really, it's being called the black plague of our generation because we never are unplugged. Right. We're never away. So if I can give people tips, and that's really, when we talk about the natural success formula, the last step of that really is going into how to eliminate stress in your life. So the stress buster is just if you have one minute and you're feeling stress in the now. So there's two types of stress. There's stress that's memorized in your body from every time you feel stress over a life event, your body memorizes that stress. And so that's usually released through meditation and some deeper practices. But if you feel stress in the moment, like you're getting ready to walk into a big meeting and you feel stress in the now, this little one minute stress buster can help. So it's just, we keep so much tension in our jaw and in our face.
Yes.
So just unclench your jaw, let your tongue fall from the roof of your mouth and soften and relax your facial muscles. And then you go down from there, you go into your neck and your shoulders and you do a quick little stretch because we keep lots of tension in there. And then you put your. This is from an acupressure point. So you put your thumb into the palm of your hand and you press gently for about five seconds.
Cool.
And then you switch and you do the other hand. So you put your right thumb in your left palm and you press for five seconds. And it's actually proven to relieve the stress that you're feeling in that moment. And then you take five very slow, deep breaths. So dantian breaths is what they're called. So very slow, very deep breathing in to about three finger widths below your belly button.
All right, Susan, thank you so much. One minute. We've relieved some stress. We've talked about self limiting beliefs and where they come from. We've talked about the Success Institute, the Natural Success Institute, and the pst, which.
Is again, positivity, sustainability and tranquility.
Right. We've learned that three great steps in order for that. And what we're gonna do right now. If you guys want to engage with Susan McLean, really go hit the Natural Success Institute on Facebook, please check out her website at the National Success Institute, Susan works with large corporations and teams on how to. What, what do you tell them? Yeah, tell us what you do for companies. Like, what's your elevator pitch?
Yeah. So again, so I use the Natur formula, and the formula is five steps, and it is how to lead your leadership team through the natural success formula. So step one is life optimization. So that's your mindset, your limiting beliefs, your vision and your goals.
Cool.
Step two is taking action, and it's uncovering what happens when you start to take action. So you run into usually roadblocks, considerations and fears. So understanding those. Step three is creating culture. So it's hiring, recruiting, and retaining. Step four is thinking big. So it's setting those big goals as a company and getting your employees and your leadership team to think bigger and set bigger goals. And then step five is letting go, which is all about the stress reduction. And if you can teach your employees how to reduce stress, you'll keep your employees longer.
Yeah, that's good. So step five, that's probably like you finish your fifth seminar or whatever that you do with them and everybody's feeling great.
Feeling great. That's right.
Well, I'm feeling great just being around this trendsetter, this leader, this influencer named Susan McLean. We are ready to roll through knowledge through the decades with our special guest. You ready to go, Susan?
I'm ready.
All right. So now I know that you probably don't remember being born, and so I always give people the out. But what is the attitude lesson of a newborn baby or your you from your very first memory? What. What is there to learn?
So one of my earliest memories is crying, literally in elementary school because I was separated from my mom. Like, I was very, very needy and clean.
Very traumatic.
Yeah. Very clean.
Separation anxiety.
So I would tell my younger self that it's all gonna be okay. Yeah. And, yeah, just experience life and for what the day is gonna bring, I like it.
And so for our gappers out there, look at no matter the chaos you're feeling that we just talked about, no matter the stress that's in your life, no matter the distractions that are occurring, no matter the negative self talk, the lack of belief, the lack of income, you know what? It's going to be okay. And there's always somebody that's probably got it worse than you.
Right, Right. But can I give them another piece of advice?
Yeah.
So we're, you know, if we look in our bank account and we see that zero or that very low balance, it's hard to get out of that. But if you have to change that, that's from the past, that zero or very low bank account balance is because of your past decisions. You can change the future from today going forward.
Awesome.
From this exact moment in time, you can make different decisions. And that starts with your thoughts.
That's good, Jason. How'd that make you feel? Real good. Real good. Why are you singling me? I don't know. I'm broke too. Hey. Yeah, but the two. Yeah, we're all broke. I ain't broke. Look at this place. I know. Studio J. We are here at Studio J on the south side of Indianapolis. If you are ever thinking of hosting a podcast, need video services. We recommend the great Jason Joliffe, my producer and Studio J. He is just killing it here. And so thank you, Jason, for your continued awesomeness. Pleasure to work with you after all these years. But you know what? Yeah. Your past does not equal your future, period. I mean, that's just so. You know, what if you had a shitty past? Who cares? Nobody cares.
Right? Right. But you've memorized those emotions from that past and you keep replaying it. You wake up in the morning and you think about those, you know, whatever happened in the past and you replay those emotions again and again and again.
Yeah.
So every day start from zero.
Yeah. Why do you think people constantly do that?
I think we get addicted to it. You know, it's that body that we get addicted to feeling those emotions. You can like really get addicted to feeling anger at someone. So, you know, we talk about like, look at the superhero movies. There's always a nemesis. Right? And we just get addicted to that emotion. And you've got to break yourself from that addiction.
That's cool. So now I'm guessing, the story you just told us, you were maybe six or seven, so you broke it a little bit. You were supposed to do a newborn, but that's okay.
I'm sorry, my bad.
She's a non conformist. That's why I like her. So do you remember being 10?
You know, I have very few childhood memories. I really did.
It must have been very bad.
No, it was a great childhood. I have very few memories. In general, I have a bad memory. I have a bad memory. But being 10, third grade, I think.
That'S third grade, isn't it?
Probably something like that.
Yeah.
But. So I was very, very. What's the opposite of outgoing?
Introverted.
Introverted. Yes, I was very, very introverted.
Wow. Not a lot of believing in yourself?
No, no. I was very shy. Very introverted. And again, I would tell myself that you got to get out of your shell. You got to meet people and move and groove. And shake and yeah, get out there and be you.
But you felt like that at 10, the attitude lesson was is you really had recognition that I'm uncomfortable being an introvert. Right. I mean, you're probably still an introvert.
I know, 100%. I'm an introvert. 100%. Yes.
But you can perform like an extrovert.
Yes, I absolutely. I can bring it. But then it drains me.
Right, exactly. Which is, I think, the case with most successful salespeople. You'd be surprised at how many are introverted. Okay. So we went from this little introverted girl on the playground in third grade and she said, I think there's more to life. And then she became a teenager and she started blossoming and became the great Susan. What was your maiden name?
Byers.
Susan Byers.
Bloomington, Indiana.
And then at 20 years old, where did you find yourself and what was the attitude lesson when you were 20?
So I was a late bloomer from a, you know, like believing in yourself. Right. So I am, I'm in my 40s. I'll just leave it at that.
Okay.
But at 20 years old, I was very, very different. So I was in college and I really didn't know what I wanted to. What I wanted to do or be. I got a degree from the school of optometry, but really didn't. Yeah. Didn't have a. Who Lot of direction. Got engaged. Right. Actually, I was a senior in college, got engaged, had some kids, stayed at home. I was a stay at home mom for a really long time. Very different from the person that I am now.
Sure, but what did you learn about being a stay at home mom?
It's the best job ever. It's the best job ever. And that's the thing with success and comparing yourself to someone else's life or someone else's version of. Of success is that I think I look back at my life and especially being a stay at home mom, I feel very successful in doing that.
Yes.
Other people would look at that and think that's not really successful, but that's that, you know, don't limit yourself based on what other people think.
Yeah. Now, and my guess is when it comes to the fulfillment question, I get this a lot because I'm sure you were fulfilled both being corporate mom and stay at home mom. But do you, I mean, do you have the guts or maybe it's not the gut. Do you maybe feel like you were maybe a little more fulfilled when you were with those kids every day or was it just different and you can't.
Really measure it, you know what it was. I always felt like there was something missing. So I said yes, it was the best job ever, and it really was. And I wouldn't have traded being a stay at home mom for anything, but I always felt like there was something missing. I just didn't know what it was. And so now I don't feel like that. Obviously I'm busy every day.
You're glad you did it, though. I'm glad I did it for you. Stay at home moms. All right, you may feel like you might be missing something, but take it from Susan that you know what, you.
Can'T get that time back.
You can't get the time back. Right. And for those of you who didn't stay at home, it doesn't mean you're wrong or anything like that either. Right.
But then I was a working mom, right? And so I think the one common denominator that whether you're a working mom or you're a stay at home mom, have you feel guilt, you feel guilt that you're not helping contribute to your household, or you feel guilt that you are and you're missing what you think you're missing with your children. And you've got to eliminate that guilt and get past that. Because the opposite of guilt is being mindful in every stage of where you're at in your life.
Right. And I think guilt comes from a lack of self belief, which is what we're talking about. I mean, if you walk around as a guilty person, the one thing that you're, you're probably not in tune with is how great you are, how wonderful you are, how much you have to offer the people in your lives and how much you're helping people around you. And guilt is a wasted emotion. It is, yes. I mean, it's completely. It does absolutely nothing for you. Right.
So we talked about the limiting beliefs, Right. So I looked at I'm not good enough in guilt. Those were probably the two emotions that I felt the majority of my life as I felt, felt guilt, you know, and I felt like I wasn't good enough. So I, I literally wrote them down, crossed them out, replace them with powerful emotions, you know, love and acceptance and, you know, power. The feeling that I, I am good enough and I can do whatever I, I want and I can be on.
Glenn Bill's podcast, that's a girl. And so, yeah, we know the two biggest fears in everyone's life are, number one, am I good enough? And number two, will I be loved?
Yeah.
I mean, that is Straight up. When you talk about fear and people do 18 hour seminars on fear and breaking through the fear, basically you're answering two questions, am I good enough? And will I be loved with what I do? So very good. So Susan, you were in optometry school and you graduated and you know all about the eyes. What's the number one thing about the eyes that we should know from you after all that years? You're looking at me like Glenn. That was a while ago.
That was a long time ago. Get your eyes checked. Checked every year.
You know, they say when I got my eyes checked that they can see future health issues through your eyes. Right. They have all these crazy weird stuff with the eyes. So yeah, that's what I was looking for. But you got nothing.
I got nothing. It was a long time ago.
You need to bring that into your training. I think that would be good. All right. And then this 20 year old turned into a 30 year old swan. You remember being 30?
I do. I do remember being 30.
And now your kids are starting to get a little older and you're sitting there going, I'm getting ready to start really blossoming my probably career. Right. So talk to me about your attitude lesson when you were 30.
Gosh, my.
What did you learn?
Yeah, my 30s, that was, that was a fun decade. I met my, my now husband when I was in my 30s who's amazing. The biggest attitude lesson. Oh gosh.
You made some big changes when you were.
I did, I made. Yeah, I made some big changes. I should have been prepared for this.
No, that's why it's good. Nobody wants to hear a canned speech.
Yeah, well, this is certainly not canned.
Here's the thing. There's women in their 30s that probably face the same challenges you did.
Well, and I was gonna say, so.
I went through divorce and that are facing right now.
Right. I went through a divorce. I was a single working mom, split custody with my kids, met my now husband, who's amazing.
I remember when that happened.
I know, I know it wasn't. I don't know how you did it long ago, honestly. But the biggest attitude lesson I would tell my 30 year old self is that you got this, you know, and I probably stayed in a marriage way too long. He's not a bad person. We just weren't. We shouldn't have been married probably. And so I should have believed in myself. You know, if I could go back and tell my 30 year old self something, it's believe in yourself and you know, go do, go do you and.
You know, not to get on the marriage course, but it's like self limiting beliefs. I mean especially. And I don't know, maybe it's not, I'm not a marriage counselor or I don't have the stats, but when, when we talk and when, when I work with divorced women. Right. It's like, why did you stay? And so much of it is, you know what? I wrapped my identity so much of into my marriage.
Oh yeah.
I lost my identity. I didn't believe in myself. And that's, that's 100%.
100%. Yeah.
Do you feel, you know, as you just went, your friends or your family or people that you work with, I mean, what's the biggest reason possibly that women in that situation feel that way? Is it learned? What is it?
So I can only speak for myself. I'm not a marriage counselor either, obviously.
But don't listen to us for marriage counselor. Right?
Yes, exactly. But speaking for myself, I got married really young and I was a very different person then. Then I was when the marriage ended. So I really learned who I was in the course of that marriage and it didn't fit with, you know, with my, my then husband.
Yeah. And I think that's growth then.
It's growth. But, but yeah, it's becoming self aware too. I mean I was probably the same person. I just, I just didn't, I just didn't know it, you know, so I get. Maybe going back to your 20 year old. I'm gonna bounce around, I'm gonna make people dizzy. My 20 year old self, I might say, you know, take time to learn who you are before you get married and have kids and do all that.
Yeah, that's great stuff. And you can help them do that.
Yes.
There's no question. You just want to tune into her at the Natural Success Institute. She will help, I would think. Yeah. I think one of the things that you could do is work with the 18 to 25 year old female demographic. I think you'd have a lot of fun and a lot of good for you to do. All right, so now it's the last one you turn. Do you remember your 40th birthday?
I do. I was so depressed. I was.
What did you do? Did you sit in a corner and cry or did you party?
No, no. So I'm very much a creature of habit. So I don't think I did anything amazing and wonderful. I celebrated it with my husband. We were, let's see, I got married to Dave when I was 40, so we were engaged.
Big year for you then. Yes. New beginnings.
New beginnings. Yup. My biggest attitude lesson. Is that the question right now? So my biggest attitude lesson, man, when.
You think about it, it's like, did you start thinking differently?
Yes.
Yeah. And so, like, what was that like?
And that was really. I've been studying again, meditation, mindset for a really long time, but that's really when a lot of the work and the practice and the certifications that I really started getting into that and saying, I can change my life and I can be whoever I want to be. I needed to determine who that is.
Right. So you know what, you've been awesome to talk to today. We appreciate it. Susan McLean has bridged the gap from girl with a big butt on a playground to opening her own business. She bridged the gap with study, a quest for study, a quest for knowledge, self improvement. Yeah. She knew who she was and she knew who she wanted to become. She knew where she was and she knew where she wanted to go. And this podcast has been eye opening, and we hope that you, our gappers, got some great techniques, got some answers, but most importantly, we know this, the quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you ask yourself about your life. I think Susan did a great job with us uncovering some of the questions that will hopefully help you bridge the gap. Susan, anything else that you'd like to add about what you do or what you're into, or if you have an upcoming online course or anything like that that maybe people could subscribe to?
I would say just the one thing to leave you with, and this is something that right now is it's all over every mirror in my house. So I use dry erase marker and just kind of write all over the mirrors. I'm. My kids love it. They erase it usually. But who am I going to be today? That's the question that I ask myself every single day. Who am I going to be today and how am I going to get there? So if you start with that question every day, everything else can kind of fall into place. Cool. And then, yeah, my next class is in January. We'll be launching in January. And it's the empowerment path. So finding your purpose, passion, and power. So there's just a little signup link on the website. It says yes. Please notify me when registration opens. So just shoot me an email there and I'll let you know when registration to the class opens.
All right. So who you were today was a podcast guest on the Get Attitude podcast. I hope that Susan's message has influenced you. I hope that has given you clarity on how to become who you want to become and how to get where you want to go. Susan McLean, thank you for being a part of the Get Attitude podcast.
