And welcome to the Get Attitude Podcast, the Gap. My name is Glenn Bill and I am your host. And this is season three. And our theme is Carry the Light. And we are so excited to have our guest today. Today, Ms. Jill. Is it Lublin or Lublin?
Lublin.
All right, Lublin. I knew it. I had it. See, there you go. Jason, you owe me a Coke. Jill, it's so great to have you with us on the Get Attitude podcast. Now, listeners, I'm going to tell you up front, Jill is in such high demand, we only got 25 minutes. Jill has been known to speak with over two, has been known to speak over 200 times each year. Mastering publicity strategists for if you're a business person, this podcast and what Jill has for you today is going to help you understand what publicity is and what the strategy behind publicity is. She's a best selling author and consistently wows audiences with her entertaining and interactive keynotes and seminars. Her training programs on publicity, networking, kindness, which is why I picked you, and influence marketing are something that everybody wants to do. She's got 17,000 followers on LinkedIn. She's been doing this for a little while. She's a spitfire and I am told that she's an awesome guests. So, Jill, welcome to the Get Attitude podcast.
Oh, I am grateful to be here. Thank you.
Awesome. I see all the books behind you, profits and kindness, something about publicity. On the other hand, maybe you got four books out there. What we always like to do and what our goal is, Jill, is to help the entrepreneurs and the people that are listening to this bridge the gap between who they are and who they want to be and from where they are to where they want to go. What is your advice talking to our audience today? Whether they're entrepreneurs, business people, or, you know, maybe they're pilots, maybe they're accountants, attorneys, we have all kinds of folks that are listening to this. What's your number one? I guess success hack when it comes to transforming into the person that you want to become?
Well, I love being here because guess what? It's all about attitude, really. And, and that is every day is a choice, right? What do you want to. What do you want to do? Like people say practice random acts of kindness. I say practice conscious acts of kindness. And you know what? That goes to your life. You know, I wake up every day, I say five things. I'm grateful for now. You know, some days I wake up more alert and more alive. But what I notice is that on those days that I don't feel as much that way, that five pieces of gratitude bring me to a new state. Because I do think, and this is my sort of bottom line advice, is that we manage our own energy, right? So take steps, whatever that is, for each of you to have something in place. Mine is gratitude, mine is meditation exercise. All of those really help to elevate where you are to where you want to be. And it's a choice. And then remember to smile. You know, it just amazes me that people could smile a little more.
Yeah, I totally agree. You can not only change your day, but you're going to change every other person's day that you're with throughout the day. So being kind and we're going to get to the kindness part, but I want to stay on the attitude a little bit. What is your definition of attitude? And who was your best attitude coach in your life?
So attitude, somebody taught me about attitude determines my altitude, right? How high can I fly? And some of that is just believing in things that you can't see. Don't know how. You know, plenty of places I've jumped and hope and that appears. And you know, honestly, sometimes it has and sometimes I fail. But here's the deal. Life is about getting back up again and trying again and new things. And that's part of the adventure. And I think for me, it's a lot about the adventure of life and that, that helps with having things to look forward to. You know, that's really important. And I've had, I've been blessed to have many mentors, some of who've been on your show. James Malenchek's been a great mentor. Les Hewitt, who wrote the Power of Focus, has been an amazing mentor. Jack Canfield, who I've had the blessing of working with, his habits, you know, all of those are things that I've incorporated into my life. I, I stay in constant personal and development as well as professional development, but I really keep myself in a practice, a consistent practice of getting better. And, you know, I think life is about practice. It's not like we've arrived and, and if you stay that way, then you're stagnant. Right. It's just a consistent sharpening of the saw, getting better and whatever that means for each of us. I know for me it means consistent development.
I like it. I like it. Tell me about a time in your life where you knew that you had to grow where you knew you had to develop, where your attitude maybe wasn't that great. What was that time? How did you shift your attitude? What did you do to your mind to help you think better? And maybe out of that, we can help some people that are listening today that may have had the same issue you had.
Well, I will tell you, I come from a family of mental illness, a lot of depression. And to come out of that and to recreate was something I knew, oh, I better. I better take care of this. And I got into, I think it was called lifespring at the time, you know, and asked. And all these wonderful programs have been very good for attitude adjustments for me, certainly. And I stayed in some kind of particularly personal development for quite a while. And, you know, guess what? Through all that, there was a time I fractured both ankles at once in multiple places and ended up in a wheelchair for close to six months.
Oh, my God.
Yeah. And that changed everything, by the way. And so what did I do? I asked, what does this mean for me? Why is this happening? Why is a bit of the booby prize question. But sometimes I think it helps to understand, but most importantly, like, what can I do to stay in positive positivity, even during a place where I had to actually stay really contained, so to speak, especially for somebody like me who was at that point also still traveling half the month and speaking in different places. And guess what? That was out the window. So, you know, it's just like, okay, what do I need to do? What can I focus on? And for me, it ended up being a TV show that I created called Messages of Hope. Because guess what? I want to stay positive. I want to give positive messages to people and always have seen publicity and the media as an opportunity to do that.
I love it. So you started your own TV show called Messages of Hope. Like, where did that debut? And how in the world did you get that from idea to on screen?
Well, this is one of the things I actually teach in my virtual publicity courses, because everyone can do this in your neighborhoods to speak. There are, you know, whether it's Comcast or whatever, Warner Brothers, et cetera, they have studios that are designated that must. You know, the FTC is mandated to give a certain amount of free opportunities to wonderful people. So guess what? In your own communities, there's public access channels and you can do your own shows. It's super simple. It is free. And that was the opportunity that I used to actually shoot 90 shows. I did 90 segments, half hours, well, 26 minutes. To be exact. And it was wonderful. And now it continues on my website. I got the opportunity to interview amazing people and frankly, it's something I'm really proud of. And that becomes part of my library of media.
Yeah. That is so fantastic. Didn't know that. Jason, did you know this? I'm guessing no, I did not. Well, me and you are going to start our attitude show. That's what's going to happen with that. So just walk into Comcast Spectrum, whatever provider there is, and say, Jill Lublin sent me and they're going to go, oh, my God, another Jill Lublin follower. Right.
Well, you all have a bit of a training to go through. Get through that. It's boring. But other than that, it's a wonderful opportunity to host your own show and have all the control. And it's awesome, actually. We had a three camera shoot. Amazing technology and it was really well done. Studios.
Well, I want to thank you for wearing the university of attitude red sweater and lipstick today. So excellent job on your. What do we call that? Wardrobe today, which is great. Talk to me a little bit about. You said your family's from mental illness and we've had a few, you know, unbelievable people. We all come from some mental illness in our families. But what I always love to ask people about is, did you know your grandparents and what did your grandparents teach you about attitude? Like, what did they do? Was there one that you were closer to? And I always just believe that generation has so many inspiring stories for our show. And we always love to ask our guests about their wonderful, wonderful grandparents. Did you have a relationship? Who were they? What did they do and how did they change your attitude?
Well, I wish I did. And this is one thing for me that's a bit, you know, a pain from my heart and that is that I did not actually have grandparents I knew well on my mom's side. A little better. A little better. I remember, I remember Grandma, she had this flaming red hair. She was outrageous and fun and way ahead of her time, as was my grandpa, who she actually divorced and at that time getting a divorce. But he was kind of a gypsy, carnival kind of circus guy. Owned fur stores. Don't tell everybody. Yes, F U R fur stores. He was. He was kind of a traveling guy really. As I reflect on them, they were ahead of their time, but they weren't with me for a long time. I mean, I think by the time I was seven or eight, I lost all my grandparents.
Oh.
And yeah, so I didn't grow up as much with them. And my Dad's mom, I don't remember much of my dad's father died when I was a year old. So unfortunately I didn't have that really grandparent kind of upbring, which is to me a missing. You know, because it's a beautiful thing to have for children and especially that they're not your parents and they shower you with all kinds of goodies.
I love it. Let's talk about kindness, which seems to be one of your keystones or your hallmarks. Why did kindness, teaching kindness and researching kindness grab you? Why are you the messenger of kindness, do you think? And tell us a little bit about what, what is kindness? What does it mean to be kind and what are the benefits of being kind?
Well, a couple things. It grabbed me because of my 85 year old friend. I think she turned 86 in a few days. And I've been the one responsible for her. I'll call it aging journey, meaning I run over when she falls down. I've taken her to lunch, doctor's appointments, letting her know that she's forgetting and all kinds of stuff. And it's been, it's been a little rough. And I remember. And honestly, right now she's in a state of dementia that I don't even think she knows when I'm there. Which is sad, right? When you've seen a friend through 30 years and know who they are. And so I think this is hard for all of us, no matter where what part you're playing in this. And there was a point where I was driving her, I think, to lunch and she said, you know, Jill, you are so kind and wouldn't it be great, she said, if we had a new currency? The currency of kindness. Yes, exactly. And that was like boom, boom, boom. And all of a sudden I approached my publisher and I said, what do you think of this book idea? They changed it to the profit of kindness, but that's okay. Funny enough, this book has done Amazing, I mean, seven Fox News interviews in the first 30 days on TV. I mean, just has legs in Inc. Magazine and Entrepreneur multiple times. So. And it's consistent, right? And then when the book was born, as I like to say about books because they do come out all of a sudden. And when the book was born, I had had an inspiration to do kindness circles. Well, the truth is, listen, I'm a publicity woman, I understand the importance of publicity. And we were busy promoting the book. Then a few years later, literally Covid hit, you know what happened? The world shut down. And I said, this is the Moment. Like, we're going to do this, we're going to do it online. We're going to do it. And we did. 60 people showed up for the first one. I thought, I think I'm onto something now. We have a community of over several hundred people. And then every year, and this year I'm doing it on November 12th we have a kindness summit where we bring four people together who talk about kindness and we have lots of circles. We're doing it for two hours on November 12th. So super excited about that. Happy to invite all your listeners.
And so, and they would go just simply. We'll go ahead and post that on the Get Attitude podcast Facebook page. I'm sure there's a link. Probably if I just go to your website, we'll copy, paste it and put it in.
There's a special link for the guests that we can get to and I'll even put it in the chat.
Yeah, yeah, put that in the chat. And Jason can copy and paste that, hopefully and text it to me. And we'll do what we can to help you. And so how many are you going to have? Several hundred at this one.
Yes. Usually the summit in particular gathers a bigger crowd. It's always beautiful. I'm big on 10 minute speakers because the real purpose is for people to be connected in kindness, to give to each other in kindness. And that's really the stand I'm taking in this world that we need to practice conscious acts of kindness every single day. Do one, Just do one. I promise you it's simple and easy. And if I get to the end of the day and for some reason haven't, I'll just send a text or a nice email and just acknowledge someone.
I love it.
So always doable and very simple and free. Really. Kindness is one of those wonderful pieces in life that just enable people to show up simple and easy without having to do much except maybe even a smile at times.
Yeah, I love that. We have Global Attitude Awareness Day and Attitude Fest and do a lot of that. And our number one rule for our attitude boosters is be nice. And we talk a lot about the positive ripple effects of being nice and how it compounds when you just simply do it. We try to tell people, get in 10 compliments. We talk about complimenting, get in 10 compliments before noon.
Oh, I love that.
When we're talking and we do our seminars and I'm keynoting, I always tell people, all right, compliment the person to your left. And then I say fake, compliment the person to your right. And all the fake compliments, the room explodes and they're like, I'm like, see guys, even when it's a fake compliment, everybody's feeling better. So I don't want, I don't want anybody to be, you know, like not authentic or real. But complimenting and kindness helps. Let's talk about publicity. What are the three things our listeners need to know about publicity? What are the three most important things that maybe somebody could go out and do right now to help promote and publicize their business?
Oh, the first thing is your message. You gotta have a good message that's concise and precise, that focuses on providing solutions. Not like, here's what I do, this is what I do. It's about you, the reader, the viewer, the listener, what's solving problems in the marketplace and then deliver golden nuggets as you speak those solutions. That's how to do a message in a quick moment. And by the way, that's a great lesson in what a message is focused, concise and simple. Five year old language, my friends.
I love it.
So that's really a key. Secondly, I want all of you to go to Google Alerts right now and put in your name as well as maybe a phrase like for me it was kindness. When I wrote prophet of Kindness, that's how I found out we have World Kindness Day. Because what will happen is it will alert you as reporters are writing things or featuring your subject. So you'll get notified. That's a really great thing to do. And then third tip is spend an hour a week, an hour a week creating what I like to call visibility building activities. It could be following reporters on certain social media. It could be doing the actions we're talking about. Right. It could be networking. But make sure that you're spending literally an hour. We can divide it into segments if that's too much, two 30 minute segments and focus on building your visibility. And I promise you results will happen and that consistency will create momentum to bring your name to the forefront. The power of publicity. What it does, I love it. It's the three M's. It magnetizes you, it monetizes you and it multiplies you. And that is something that's simple and easy and free. And that's the power of publicity. And I just want to say, Glenn, that I'm having a super cool challenge and I'd love you to post that too for, for all your listeners, just simple and easy publicity tips that are going to move you quickly.
I love it. And that is there's a Challenge, I think. Is this what it is, Jason, you just got it. Is my producer the best? He's so good. So. Way to go, Jason. So, yeah, we're on Spotify. We're on, on the video platform of Spotify. So people will be able to see this as well. And yeah, go check it out. Maybe I'll jump in there and try to do some of that with you. That sounds like a lot of fun. Let's talk about your keynoting. Are you still doing 200 keynotes a year or have you backed that down to 50 or so?
Well, you know, as you know, I like others, kind of got spoiled on the. I'm not getting on a plane all the time unless you pay me a good amount of money, honey. So what I would tell you is I'm doing a lot of virtual speaking. I haven't a blast at that.
Yes.
I actually did do my first in person keynote literally this year. First one.
Wow.
But that doesn't mean I haven't been speaking. I've been speaking probably more than I've ever spoken before on virtual forums and summits and all kinds of groups and associations who bring me into their virtual meetings. I'm having so much fun doing that. And, you know, I've adopted new behaviors. You got to get props, you know, learn how to be a star. You know, just say yes to the media. You gotta have, you know, some fun and, and do some things that are different on Zoom and different in meetings. But, you know, listen, I try again, trained myself. I took a class, James Malincheck actually, about how to speak powerfully on Zoom, and that was super. So, so staying, you know, up and at em, this has been one of the best recreations for my speaking career is the opportunity to speak for groups and associations virtually.
I love it.
It's fantastic.
I love it. So before you were a speaker, what were you?
Ah, well, I've been in the wonderful world of publicity for a while, so I would tell you. I was a publicity consultant, then turned into a PR agency. Once guerrilla publicity came out, I recreated that into virtual publicity courses. Right. And so I've been doing that or some variation thereof for quite a while. But I started my career, interestingly enough, in the music business. Oh. And yeah, I was the director of promotion and publicity at four, count them, yes, four independent record labels, which gave me great experience with learning how to promote music, which, you know, the music business, acting, it's all about perception. It's all about perception.
Yes.
Simmons of Kiss, I mean, brilliant businessman, understood the Value of perception.
I love it. And so you maybe. I know I only got three more minutes left with you. I was going to ask you, you've been around a lot of powerful, successful, influential people. Who was that one person? If it's Gene, that's fine, but like, who is the one person you're like, I'm a little nervous. And what did you do to get your confidence up for those people that are listening, right, that may have that big appointment, that may have that big sales call, that may have that big challenge in front of their life that maybe they're feeling like I'm not enough. I'm not sure I can do this. What is your attitude and what was your attitude when you got into, you know, that realm of the super powerful or super influential? And how did you, how did you flip that switch for the people that are listening?
You know, interestingly enough, Dr. Timothy Leary, I met him when he was 70. He had on a blue blazer with a cashmere white turtleneck. I mean, I remember this because he was like, he could have been my grandfather walking in, you know, and he probably, he was 70 at the time. Brilliant man, regardless of any perception that people might have of him. And interestingly enough, I got hired by the Learning Annex to support a tour that he was doing about virtual reality. Now I didn't even know what virtual reality was, so I had to kind of do a quick course on that and help promote. Tim actually was a big voice for promoting virtual reality, which of course now is, is in all kinds of opportunities to play with that. And, and he was, he was amazing. And I was a little nervous. And especially that day, we had interview after interview after interview lined up and a big photo shoot at a very nice San Francisco restaurant. You know, literally he had interviews every hour and a half. So it was kind of like that superstar fun thing that publicity people enjoy. And it was a wonderful day. And Tim was an amazing, graceful host. And the hardest thing for me was that 7am interview downtown San Francisco. You know, looking good and meeting Tim and having fun. But it was, it was a wonderful, rock filled day. And part of that, you know, one of the things I've noticed when I am afraid is that excitement, excitement is the same energy as fear. And when I am afraid, you know, here's what I say. I'm so excited.
I love it. Spoken in the words of the Pointer Sisters. Well, as we always end our Get Attitude podcast, we love to just give you an opportunity to speak one to one to the folks who are looking to bridge the gap from who they are to who they want to be, from where they are to where they want to go. And if you could just give us, do your best PR to tell them your message of hope for them and your thoughts on their success.
So, first of all, I just really want to say to each of you, number one, congratulations for being here, for listening, for putting yourself forward to take a next step to learn to grow. That's the first big thing, right, is to be willing to grow. And I think that that's really key because you are always growing. See this, your beautiful garden. And you are an evolutionary flower and messenger. And that your message matters and that you grow your garden consistently throughout your life. And it's important to know that your message matters. Your message matters, and that's the way your garden grows, to keep knowing that.
Thank you so much, Jill, for that. That is an inspiring message. Your insights on publicity, networking, and kindness have changed us. You maybe have started the television show that Jason and I have been wanting to do for years, and we're just so grateful that you were part of the Get Attitude podcast. We appreciate your positivity and your attitude, and we wish you as much success that you can handle. And we hope that everybody goes to Jill Lublin's courses, goes to her Kindness Day, and goes to her challenge, all on her website. If you want to enhance your life, Jill is somebody that you want to follow. Thanks so much, Jill.
Thank you.
