Humanity had been stricken by the unknown plague. The final years of Pope Francis pontificate were marked with numerous appeals for peace against the Third World War that he called that was being fought in piecemeal, he said, as well as unfolding very dramatically in various countries, especially Ukraine, as well as in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon and Myanmar.
And as we know then, after his hospitalization from the 4th of July, July 4th, 2021, lasting 10 days for surgery at the Gemelli Polyclinic, Pope Francis on 14th February 2025, returned to the same hospital for a 38 day stay due to bilateral pneumonia. And back in the Vatican, he spent his final weeks at Casa Santa Marta, dedicating himself to the end with the same passion to his patron ministry. Though not fully recovered, we know we saw him on easter Sunday, on the 20th of April 20th, 2025, for one last time. He appeared on the Lodge of St. Peter's Basilica to impart the solemn Urbi et urbi blessing. And then he drove around on the papal mobile and greeted the faithful who had gathered at St. Peter's and then he left us. The following morning we see these beautiful images coming live from the basilica, the cardinals and the bishops beginning the procession which would lead us to the beginning of this solemn celebration of the Eucharist.
The deed that was placed in Pope Francisco coffin as we await the beginning of this Requiem Mass, recalls that his doctrinal magisterium was extremely rich. He recalls that he often offered a witness to a sober and humble lifestyle founded on missionary, openness, apostolic courage and mercy, and attentive to avoiding the pitfalls of self referentiality and spiritual worldliness of the Church. Pope Francis, we know, set out his apostolic program for his papacy that lasted just over 12 years with his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium in November 2013. And he released four encyclicals through the year, such as Lumen Fide in 2013, Laudato Si in May of 2015, which became the first papal encyclical dedicated to ecology and on care for our common home. Later, In October of 2020, the Pope released his encyclical Fratelli Tutti on human fraternity and social friendship. And then just Last year, in October 2024, he released the Lexit Nos on devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of. The Holy Father, also famously was elected in 2013. For as the cardinals recognized the need to begin reform of the Roman Curia, the governing body of the Church, the central governing body that assists the bishops throughout the world in their ministry and seeks to help the Church be united. And he did that, famously, through reorganizing the Roman Curia and setting this reorganization, to which he was asked by the cardinals. Into a solid document with the apostolic constitution, Predicate Evangelium, preach the gospel, which was his focus. And now we see, still in the silence of a quiet St. Peter's Basilica in St. Peter's Square, the coffin of Pope Francis has been raised upon the shoulders of the pallbearers to bring the late Pope Francis, his mortal remains to the steps of St. Peter's Basil.
And we then want to prepare ourselves and solemnly participate in this very moving celebration. We will join the procession very symbolically with the casket carrying the remains of Pope Francis. We participate as pilgrims of hope, a theme which was very particular and important to Pope Francis. And then we journey forward as people of hope, knowing, as Pope Francis taught and preached, that death is not the end. We remember in one of his audiences in November 27, 2013, he says, our life is a journey. If we look at the most painful moments of our lives, when we have lost a loved one, our parents, a brother, a sister, a spouse, a child, a friend, we realize that even amid the tragedy of loss, even when torn by separation, the conviction arises in the heart that everything cannot be over, that the good given and received has not been pointless. There is a powerful instinct within us which tells us that our lives do not end with death. The thirst for life found its true and reliable answer in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus. Resurrection does not only give us the certainty of life after death, it also illumines the very mystery of the death of each one of us. And that's our prayer today for Pope Francis as we join silently the procession towards St. Peter Square.

As the pallbearers bring the late Pope Francis coffin to the front of St. Peter's Square, we hear the infants. Antiphon. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

And if you have just joined us this morning, we come into you live from St. Peter's Square, where thousands have gathered to bid farewell to Pope Francis as we celebrate his life. We currently see the procession, the cardinals processing to begin the celebration. And of course, the procession symbolizes our journey towards God and the heavenly sanctuary. It reminds us that our life is a pilgrimage. We're moving from the temporal world towards eternal life. And as the procession moves forward, it evokes our journey towards heaven, guided by the light of Christ and the symbol of the Gospel. The book of the Gospel has just been placed on the coffin of Pope Francis, reminding us as well that he lived his life guided by the gospel he preached. The Gospel.
Jim, that is accompanying us.
Accompanying the bishops and cardinals who are filing into St. Peter's Square in procession. He calls Praise is due to you in Zion, O God. To you we pay our vows in Jerusalem. To you who hear our prayer, to you all flesh will come. Our evil deeds are too heavy for us, but only you can pardon our transgressions. Blessed the one whom you choose and call to dwell in your courts. We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple. This name is taken from the Psalm 64.
Ra. Sam ram. Ra.
To him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. That's how the choir is leading us to the beginning of this celebration. Cardinal Giovanni Batista will be the celebrant, the main celebrant, leading us to know the celebration. He's the dinner of the Cardinals.
And.
He'S currently in the altar. Image of our Blessed Mother. And of course we know that the rising smoke of incense symbolizes the prayer of the faithful ascending to heaven, as mentioned in Psalm 141. Let my prayer be directed as incense to thy sight, O Lord. We then prepare ourselves to begin together as the Cardinal leads us in this celebration.
Sa.
Brethren, let us acknowledge our sins and prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries.
I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed through my fault.
Fault.
Through my fault. Through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask, Blessed Mary, ever virgin.
All the angels and saints, and you.
My brothers and sisters, pray for me.
May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
Ram. Ram.
O God, immortal shepherd of souls, look on your people's prayers who presided over your church in charity. May, with a flock entrusted to his care, receive from your mercy the reward of a faithful steward through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
The first reading is from the Acts of the Apostles and will be read in English.
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. In those days Peter opened his mouth and said, truly, truly, I understand that God shows partiality, but in every nation, anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to Him.
Him.
As for the word that sent Israel preaching good, good news of peace through Jesus Christ. He is Lord of all.
You.
You yourselves know what happened throughout Judea. Beginning getting Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed. How God anoint Jesus Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and. And power.
Power.
He went about doing good and healing. All were oppressed by the devil. For God was with him. And we are witnesses. Both in the country of the Jews and Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. But God raised him on the third day and caused him to appear not to all people, but to us who had been chosen by God. Witnesses who ate and drank with him after he rose to death. And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prosper. Bear witness that everyone believes in him. Receive forgiveness through his name.
The responsorial psalm will be sung in Latin. The Lord is my shepherd. There is nothing I shall.
It.
Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me. Near restful waters he leads me. He revives my soul. He guides me along the right path earth for the sake of his name. Though I should walk in the valley of the shadow of death, no evil would I fear. For you are with me in your staff you give me comfort. You have prepared a table before me. In the sight of my bones, My head you have anointed with oil. My cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord's own house shall I dwell for the length of days and endings. The second reading will be read in Spanish from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians. Brothers and sisters, our citizenship is in heaven. And from it we await the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like a glorious body by the power that enables him him even to subject all to Himself. For my brothers and sisters and long for my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord. My beloved.
Ram. Ram.
As the deacon who receives does the deacon who will proclaim the Gospel receives the blessing from the presider. We hear the choir sing. This is the will of my Father, says the Lord. Everyone who believes in the Son should have eternal life. And I will raise him up on the last day.
Sam. Sa.
It is a reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. When Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, feed my lambs he said to him a second time, simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, tend my ships. He said to him the third time, simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him that that time, do you love? And they said to him, lord, you know everything. You know that I love you. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk whenever you wanted to. And when you are old, you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. This he said, to show how by what kind of death he was to glorify God. And after saying this, he said to him, follow me.
Sa. Sam.
The deacon now carries the book of the Gospel.
Cardinal Delivery in this majestic St. Peter's Square, where Pope Francis celebrated the Eucharist so many times and presided over great gatherings over the past 12 years, we are gathered with sad hearts in prayer around his mortal remains. Yet we are sustained by the certainty of faith which assures us that human existence does not end in the tomb, but in the Father's house in a life of happiness that will know no end. End. On behalf of the College of Cardinals, I cordially thank all of you for your presence. I extend expected greetings and heartfelt thanks to the heads of state, government and official delegations from many countries to express their affection, veneration and esteem for our late Holy Father. The outpouring of affection that we have witnessed in recent days following his passing from this earth into eternity, tells us how much the profound pontificate of Pope Francis touched minds and hearts.
The final image we have of him which will remain etched in our memory is that of last Sunday, Easter Sunday, when Pope Francis, despite his serious health problems, wanted to give us his blessing on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. He then came down to this square to greet the large crowd gathered for the Easter Mass while riding in the open top popemobile. With our prayers, we now entrust the soul of our beloved Ponti to God that he may grant eternal the bright and glorious gaze of his immense love.
We are enlightened and guided by the passage of the Gospel in which the voice, the very voice of Christ resounded, asking the first of the Apostles, Peter, do you love me more than these. Answer was prompt and sincere. Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you. Jesus entrusted him with a great mission. Feed my sheep. This would be the constant task of Peter and his successors, Our Master and Lord. Despite his frailty and suffering towards the end, Pope Francis chose to follow this path of self giving. Until the last day of his dirty life. He followed in the footsteps of his Lord, the Good shepherd, who loved his sheep to the point of giving his life for them. And he did so with strength and serenity, close to the Church of God.
When Cardinal Bergoglio was elected by the conclave on March 3rd to succeed Pope Benedict VI, he already had many years of experience in religious life in the Society of Jesus, and above all was enriched by 21 years of pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, first as auxiliary and then as coadjutor and above all as Archbishop. The decision to take the name Francis immediately appeared to indicate the pastoral plan and style on which he wanted to base his pontificate. Seeking inspiration from the Spirit of St Francis of Assisi, He maintained his temperament and form of pastoral leadership and through his resolute personality, immediately made his mark on the governance of the Church.
Church.
He established direct contact with individuals and peoples eager to be close to everyone, a marked attention to those in difficulty, living himself without measure, especially to the margin line. He was a Pope with an open heart towards everyone. He was also a Pope attentive to the signs of the times and what the Holy Spirit was awakening in the Church.
With his characteristic vocabulary and language, rich images and metaphors, he always sought to shed light with the wisdom of the Gospel. He did so by offering a response guided by the light of faith. It encourages us to lead as Christians amid the challenges and contradictions in recent years, which he loved to describe as an ethical change. He had a great and an informal way of addressing everyone, even those far from the Church. In human warmth and deeply sensitive to today's challenges. Pope Francis truly shared the anxieties, sufferings and hopes of this time of globalization. He gave of himself by comforting and encouraging us with a message capable of.
Reaching.
In a direct and immediate way. His charisma of welcome and listening, combined with a manner of in keeping with today's sensitivities, touched hearts and soughts to reawaken moral and spiritual sensibilities.
Evangelization was the guiding principle of his quantity. With a clear missionary vision, he spread.
The joy of the Gospel, which was.
The title of his first apostolic exhortation. It is a joy that fills the hearts of those who entrust themselves to God with confidence and love. The guiding thread of his mission was also the conviction that the Church is a home for all a home with its doors always open. He often used the image of the church. After a battle. Meaning had been wounded. Determined to take care of the problems people and the great anxieties that tear the contemporary world apart. A church capable of bending down to every person, regardless of their beliefs or conditions and healing their wounds. Favor of refugees and displaced persons are countless. His insistence on working on behalf of the poor was constant. Significant that Pope Francis first journey was to Lampeduse. An island that symbolizes the tragedy of.
Immigration.
With thousands of people drowning at sea. In the same vein was to Lesbos together Ecumenical Patriarch Archbishop of Athens. As well as the celebration of a Mass on the border between Mexico. During his journey to Mexico. Of his 47 arduous apostolic journeys, the one two Iraq in 2021. Defying every risk will remain particularly memorable. That difficult apostolic journey was a balm on the open moons Iraqi people who had suffered so much from the inhuman actions of isis. It was also an important trip for into religious dialogue. Another significant dimension of his pastoral. With his 2024 apostolic journey, four countries in Asia and Oceania reached periphery of the world.
Placed the gospel of mercy at the center. Repeatedly emphasizing God never tires of forgiving us. He always forgives, whatever the situation might be. Asks forgiveness in return to the right path. He called for the extraordinary jubilee of mercy. In order to highlight the mercy is the heart of the gospel. The joy of the gospel are two key words for Pope Francis. In contrast to what he is recalled the culture of waste. He spoke of the culture. He spoke of the culture of encounter and solidarity. Ran through his his entire pontificate. He wanted to revive a worldwide aspiration to fraternity. We are all children of the same Father who is in heaven. He often forcefully reminded us that we all belong to the same human family and that no one is saved. 2019 during his trip to the United Arab Emirates, Pope Francis signed a document on human and fraternity for world peace and living together. Common fatherhood of God.
Addressing men and women throughout the world, he drew attention to the duties shared responsibility for our common home. Stating that no one is saved alone. Raging wars of recent years with their inhuman horrors and countless deaths and destruction. Francis incessantly raised voice imploring peace.
Calling. For reason.
And inviting honest negotiation to find possible solutions. War, as he said, results in the death of people and the destruction of homes, hospitals and schools. War always the world. It is always a painful and tragic defeat for everyone. Build bridges, not walls was an exhortation he repeated. And his service of faith. Successor of the apostle Peter always linked to the service of humanity in all its dimensions, Spiritually united with all of Christianity. We are here in large numbers to pray for Pope that God may welcome him into the immensity of his love. Pope Francis used to conclude his speeches and meetings by saying, Do not forget to pray for me. Now. Dear Pope Francis, we now ask you to pray for us. We ask you. From heaven. May you bless the Church, may you bless Rome and bless the whole world as you did last Sunday from the balcony of this basilica in a frieny embrace with all the people of God, but also embrace humanity that seeks the truth with a sincere heart and holds high the torch of hope. That was the homily delivered by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Rey, Dean of the College of Cardinals, who is presiding at this Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis. As we transition from the Liturgy of the Word to the Liturgy of the Eucharist shortly we recall and we reflect on Christ's presence in all of our lives. The constant reminder of Pope Francis that we have only to turn to him in order to receive forgiveness and to be welcomed back into the loving arms of God our Father. And now we will pray.
Let us pray to God of who today, together to commemorate, May he welcome him into his peace and bestow every blessing upon the Church and the whole world.
For the late Pope Francis, that the Chief shepherd who eternally lives to intercede for us, may welcome him into his kingdom of life and peace. For the Holy Church of God, that in fidelity to her mandate she may be in Christ a leaven of renewal in our human family. For all peoples and nations, that by the tireless pursuit of justice they may be ever united in fraternal love and persevere in seeking the paths of peace. For the souls of the deceased Roman Pontiffs and of all those who in the Church proclaim the Gospel and exercise the priestly ministry, that they may come to share in the Heavenly Liturgy. For all the faithful departed, that they may be granted entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. For us gathering, gathered here, that having celebrated the sacred mysteries, we may one day be called by Christ to enter his glorious kingdom.
Welcome to the assembly of. The prayer of the Church through Christ our Lord. And we move now to the Liturgy of the Eucharist. As we see the procession of the gifts, the gift gifts of bread and wine to be offered during this celebration. On the altar the choir will be leading us. Give light into my eyes, lest I fall asleep in death, Lest my enemy say I have prevailed over him. So the Words of Psalm Psalm 12. And of course, the offering of gifts or the offer tree is a moment when the faithful present bread and wine which will be consecrated into the body and blood of Christ. In today's context, during the celebration at this require Mass for Pope Francis, this air takes on additional meaning as we also symbolically offer his life to God. It is a gesture of surrender in trust, avalating that Pope Francis is now in God's care. And as you know, Pope Francis once said, our lives do not end with death. The thirst for life found its true and reliable answer in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The gifts on the altar, the gift of bread and wine, and the choir currently leading us with song, chanting the words of Psalm 12. Give light to my eyes lest I fall asleep in death, lest my enemy say I have prevailed over him. And of course, the bread and wine offered during the offer to represent not only the gift of creation, but also our own lives and sacrifices. And therefore, in this require mass, we are united. We unite our grief, our prayers and hopes with the sacrifice of Christ, who conquered death and opened the way to eternity eternal life. Pope Francis dedicated his life to serving Christ and his church, and this moment reflects his lifelong commitment to following Jesus.
Sa.
Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

We pray, O Lord, on the peaceful offering of your people with which we confidently commit to your mercy the soul of your servant, Pope Francis. And grant, we pray, that having been in the midst of the human family an instrument of your charity and peace, he may merit to delight in the same forever with your saints. Through Christ our Lord. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. In him the hope of blessed resurrection is dawned, that those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come. Indeed, for your faithful Lord, life is changed, not ended. And when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven. And so, with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, with all the hosts and powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory as without end. We acclaim.

So we it's the conclusion of the celebration, as you notice. The conclusion the celebration concluded with the final commendation which reminded us serves as an emotional reminder of our faith in the resurrection and the eternal life promised by Christ. It's not just a moment of goodbye. It is a sacred act of entrusting our beloved Pope Francis into the merciful hands of God. So Cardinal Daniel will let led the prayer entrusting Pope Francis to God's care and asking for eternal rest and peace. We sang the litany of the saints and we invoked the intercessions of the saints. And we now begin the procession to the basilica. And then from there the body, the remains of Pope Francis will be taken to his the real place. It's Maria Machore. And of course the prayer which was repeated a number of times during the celebration. We pray for eternal rest and we pray that may the perpetual light shine upon him. My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. For he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed. For he who is mighty has done great things for me and holy is his name and his mercy is for those who fear him. From generation to generation he has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble state. He has filled the hungry with good things and the rich he has sent away empty. He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his offspring forever. Crowd of nearly an older 250,000 people estimated by the Italian authorities we hear applause erupt as the coffin of Pope Francis enters St. Peter's Basilica for the last time.
