The Hidden Price of High Performance

Greg Stevenson describes the hidden cost high-performers pay: exhaustion that makes you physically present but mentally absent, even at family dinner. He separates the exterior game of targets and results from the interior game of who delivers them, arguing that neglecting inner well-being makes success unnecessarily expensive.

There is a version of success that looks right from the outside and costs everything on the inside. Most people in high performance do not talk about it. Not because it's not real. Because the professional identity depends on not naming it. I'm going to name it today because I paid the bill for years without ever seeing the invoice. And I do not think you should have to. The family dinner. I remember an evening at the family dinner table. I delivered everything that week for the business— every target, every commitment, every expectation. Walked through the door and sat down. During dinner, my son looked at me and said, Dad, you're here, but you're not actually here. He was young, but he was completely right. I'd been running at a pace that left nothing at the door. Every unit of energy the role demanded, the role got it. And the people I love most got what was left. Which that week was not much. Call it the invoice. High performance has a hidden invoice. Most leaders never see it until after they have paid it. The invoice is not burnout. It is more subtle than that. It is a Sunday evening that does not feel the way it should. The drive home after a strong week where you cannot quite feel the win. The relationship that has been running on maintenance for longer than you want to admit. It's a quiet cost of a life run entirely on the outside game, without doing the interior work that makes it sustainable. I'm not telling you to perform less. I'm telling you there is a way to perform at this level without paying that price. But it requires a different kind of work. Work that most leadership development never asks you to do. The interior game. The exterior game is what you deliver— the targets, the strategy, the team, the results. The interior game is who is delivering it. Until you, until you do the interior work, the exterior results will always cost more than they should. Not because you're doing anything wrong, because you're doing everything right, just at the wrong level. The interior game is what this channel is about. Every video, every framework, every story, it all points to the same work. If you recognize yourself in any part of that, if the hidden invoice is something you're already paying, I want you to know something. It does not have to keep costing you that much. The work I do exists to change that. Subscribe for more on The Interior Game.
