Greg Stevenson says CEO interviews aren't about technical skills. Boards are testing character: why you want the job, whether you own your mistakes, if you're honest, and if they can trust you when things go wrong.

If you're sitting in a CEO interview, here is something worth knowing before you walk in. The board already knows you are capable. Your record got you to the meeting. So the interview is not testing competence. It is testing who you become under pressure, why you want it, whether you can be honest about what you have got wrong, whether you are someone they can trust when it is hard, and the outcome is uncertain. Most people prepare for the answers. The board is reading the person giving them. They already know you can do the job. The real question is whether they trust who you are while you do it.
