Greg Stevenson explains why the most qualified candidate often loses the CEO job. By the final round, every finalist has the credentials boards want. What actually decides it: whether you fit that specific board's culture, leadership style, and unstated expectations. Most candidates never figure this out.

Most executives preparing for the CEO role are preparing for the wrong assessment. They're building the case for the outside— the track record, the credentials, the strategic capability, the financial acumen, the industry experience. They're all visible, measurable, documentable evidence that they are ready. All of that matters. A board will scrutinise all of it. And I'm not suggesting you stop building it. But here's the thing. If you have made it to serious consideration for a CEO role, whether internal succession or external appointment, the credentials have already done their job. Everyone in the final round has a credible track record. They wouldn't be there if they didn't. Everyone has relevant capability. Everyone has been assessed as technically viable. The question the board is now trying to answer is a different one entirely, and most candidates don't know what the question is.
