Welcome to the Test Guild Automation Podcast where we all get together to learn more about automation and software testing with your host, Joe Calantonio.
Hey, it's Joe. Do you want to know the one thing you can do this year to accelerate your career in 2022? Well, today I want to share with you some of the sessions and speakers for the 2022 Automation Guild Online Conference and why. I think these sessions are really going to accelerate either a new or existing automation project, saving you time, money and headaches, and also tap into the Guild community all year long, on top of helping you acquire skills that are going to make you even more employable in the new year. So I want to officially invite you to join us at this year's event. It's happening February 7th to the 11th completely online. I've been doing it since 2017. It's the 6th annual event and our goal at Every Guild is you discover either a tip, tool, technique, best practice or mindset that's going to help you or your teams succeed in creating what we like to call automation awesomeness. You don't want to miss this year's event. Listen all the way to the end to find out why. I really think this is one of the must attend events of the year.

All right, so the first thing I just want to go really quick is how we decide what sessions we're going to have at each Automation Guild. It always starts with me emailing PASS and Automation Guild Conference attendees and asking them what is the number one thing that they are struggling with with their automation efforts. And based on their input I find out what type of topics the Guild are interested in. I then have a call for speakers. I open up for like three to four months where I list out the topics the Guild want to know more about and then once I get submissions from the speakers, I have the guild vote on just the titles and the session description. They don't know who who the sessions by or anything like that. It's just a title and a description and then I take that information and decide which speakers are going to join us for this event. So it is an attendee led event, completely 100%. So this helps me Ensure that I'm creating an event that you're really going to get a lot of value from. And so the first session that's actually going to kick off the whole event is stop over testing, taming the combinatorial explosion. And of all the submitted papers, this particular session was the one that got the most votes. So. So that's why this first one was chose for the shares event. Hi, I'm James. And I'm Marcus. This session will explore how you can target automated testing to deliver the most value in Sprint. We'll offer a three dimensional definition of test coverage which you can use to measure your testing and know with confidence when it's done. We'll also explore the types of changes from across the SDLC that should inform your testing risk profiles and how automated test generation can create optimized tests continuously based on these changes. Thank you James and Marcus for this session. Like I said, it was the highest rated one that the Guild wants to know more about. And I think it's a big problem area with a lot of folks with their testing efforts. A lot of times they have thousands and thousands of tests that necessarily don't necessarily give them a lot of value because they may not be focusing on the high risk areas of their application. And this session actually helps you whittle down your test suite to only have the most important test available to really highlight the risk areas of your application so that you can release in the wild with confidence, knowing that the most important areas of your application are covered and have been thoroughly tested without over testing and more importantly without under testing. So another thing a lot of Guild members told me in the survey results were that they want to know more about Cypress. So at this event we have I think three sessions around Cypress. One is Cypress Hacked Visual Testing, one's on demystifying the advanced capabilities of Cypress Test Automation frameworks, and the last one is how to speed up your Cypress test with CY request. My name is Christine. My talk is about how I hacked Cypress in different really incredible ways to make it workable and to just make it more stable. As everybody know, sometimes this can be really, really tough to make your test suite workable. And I found some amazing ways how to do that. Hi everyone, my name is. I'm going to talk about some advanced capabilities within the Cypress Test automation frameworks, how you can leverage API testing, visual testing, accessibility and much more. I've been many times presenter and attendee at this automation guild. Always excited, always love the content and the value that you get from this conference. Hey Everybody, Kristen, Jack Voni here. I'm the principal engineer for Quality Paylocity and my topic is going to be speed up your Cypress tests with CY request. So a lot of people have been using Cypress for their UI testing and it's a really awesome tool. I'm very excited about it, but I am even more excited about doing as many tests through the API as possible because API tests are faster, less flaky, more reliable than traditional UI tests. So did you know that Cypress has a CY request feature that you can use to make API tests? So what I'm going to be doing in my presentation is I'm going to be taking a set of traditional UI tests in Cypress and I'm going to be converting a bunch of them over to be API tests instead and then you'll be able to watch them run efficiently. Thank you Christine and Ron and Kristen for these great sessions. I think you're really going to learn a lot about about Cypress. But a lot of times, even if you're not using the same tool as a speaker, and this is important, you could still find concepts you can apply to any tool or technology. And even more important, after the session each speaker will be available for live Q and A. So because they're experts in automation, if the topic didn't cover something that you're interested in, you could still ask them a question around automation in general, how they will handle something with automation so it doesn't have to necessarily tied exactly to the topic. You also can ask them other questions pertaining to issues that you may be struggling with as an automation engineer, because all these speakers are hands on automation experts as well. Besides Cypress, if you use Selenium, we also have sessions on that as well. Here's an example of one on selenium 4. This is actually by a previous attendee of the last Automation guild. So I love people that were originally attendees and then they become speakers. It really helps create more of a guild feel for sure. Hello, I am Nikolai Stanojev. The topic I choose to present is called Making possible possible with selenium 4. During the session you'll be able to see how to use devtools in your tests in a PDD style, how to mock data in order to automate negative or coronal case scenarios, and last but not least, how to validate your network request or responses while your tests are running. All the examples which I'm going to share are from my real experience. Now, besides sessions around tools specifically, we also have sessions that really help for automation in general. And one area I think a lot of testers lack in is how to apply programming design principles to automation. Because as automation engineers, we all know automation engineers are software developers. So we need to include the same type of processes and techniques that developers of application and also apply them to our automation test. So here are a few examples of some of those sessions that you're going to get at this event as well. Hello everyone, this is Manpreet here talking to you from Bangalore, India. Today I'd like to take this opportunity given to me by Joe and the Gale Conferences team to talk to you today about design patterns and you know, as a senior test engineer, the job mostly involves writing frameworks, tooling, performance tools, things like that.
For continuous delivery and other stuff. And a lot of the times when you're writing the automation code, the stress is on writing following good design principles when we are doing that, because that code, we don't know how many years it's going to be staying in use and what kind of changes might need to be introduced. So we want to follow good design practices. Hi everyone. Today we're going to talk about an interesting topic which is not so popular within test automation engineers, rather within developers. Its topic is how to use big annotation in your development. Before we start, short brief About Me My name is Dmitry, I'm from Kyiv, Ukraine. I have a great passion. It's scalable and reliable test automation framework and fast and efficient tests are the great base for that. So today I want to share my practical experience how big osimking can extremely increase speed and efficiency of your tests. So I don't know if you've been on an interview lately, but a lot of times when you go for an SDAP position, they actually interview as if you are a application developer. So you'll get asked the same questions like what is big O? So if you join this conference, you'll know what Big O notation is. You'll be able to go to a whiteboard and explain it. And also Manpreet goes over design patterns that you'll probably get asked like what's a singleton, what's a factory, What's a builder, when should use them? When are they useful, when shouldn't you use them? So those are the type of skills you definitely will get out of these two sessions. Also, if you do any sort of mobile test automation, we have you covered as well. So we have one session on getting started with test automation using Flutter, which has been a very popular framework the past year. I'm sure it's only going to increase in 2022. And we also have Jonathan Lips, who is the main contributor, the main maintainer of Appium joining us, talking about the power of Appium 2.0 plugins. Let's listen in really quick to their sessions everyone. It's Jonathan Lips here. This year's Automation Guild and going to be contributing a little something on Appium 2.0 plugins. You've probably heard that Appium 2.0 is coming. It has been coming for a very long time should it's, you know, already out in beta. So hopefully we'll be officially out here pretty soon. One of the biggest new Parts of Appium 2.0 is the plugin ecosystem. So in my Automation Guild talk, I'm going to be going over what Appium 2.0 plugins are and kind of do a deep dive into a new one that I'm developing that I think you'll all find pretty interesting. Just as an example of the sort of power and flexibility of the plugin system.
Hey everyone, my name is Satyan. I've been doing test automation for more than 10 years. I primarily mobile. Mobile is my passion. I've been doing automation starting from pre Appium moved on to Appium Espresso and I moved on from pure test automation role to development role. But at the core I'm still very passionate about testing and I was very glad to see that Flutter has very robust support Flutter testing and test automation and I want to share those principles too with the community before we get further right. Flutter is a multi platform framework which means that the same code will work for iOS, Android Web Desktop apps too. So your automation will also work for that. So I'm very excited to share share those learnings with you. Besides these technical talks, we also have other talks around things like how to have an automation mindset, how to level up your career. So let's give a little flavor for what those type of sessions will be like and how they're going to help you as well. Hello, my name is Maro Kuchi and I work as Senior QA Automation Engineer at NES. I am located in Slovakia on Automation Guild 2022. I will speak about automation testing mindset and habits which I think are important during your work on automation assignments. Also, what's different about this event? It's a three day event and a five day event so the first three days are dedicated specifically to functional automation testing. So you have one option to buy just the three day ticket or you can get the full experience. The 5 day event so would include the first 3 days which are dedicated just to functional automation testing. And the last two include what I know, it's a terrible term, non functional type of automation topics. So a lot of things that I think are going to be more important for testers as we go into 2022. So we'll have topics around Chaos Engineering, performance testing, security testing, GitHub, actions, CICD, a bunch of other things. So let me share a few of those sessions with you as well, because I think as an automation engineer, you need to be focused not only just on functional automation, but you need to have in your toolkit all the other types of automation you can help your teams with to succeed in this fast paced modern software development cycles we find ourselves in. Being a tester is a little bit like being a Pokemon trainer. A big part of our role is choosing the right tools or the right Pokemon for the job. A decade ago we pretty much had to make do with whatever was out there in terms of testing tools. But we live in a golden age of testing. There are so many tools out there. That's not the problem. Having multiple types of testing in the same project sounds nice in theory, but in reality you're going to be spending a significant amount of time and effort trying to create and maintain scripts in different languages and different tools and then somehow finding a way to make them all run together in the same CICD pipeline. What if you could create different types of tests in the same script, in the same language and in the same tool? But that's impossible. Or is it? Tune in to my session in search for the best Pokemon to find out and in the meantime, excuse me, I've got Pokemon to catch. What's going on y'? All? Evan, the Nojadlo AKA Random Thoughts tech here and we're gonna learn how to play Chaos Engineer for the whole band. So the focus of my talk is gonna be on the whole team approach to Chaos Engineering. I'm end up covering some of the basics of Chaos Engineering, some of the tooling and then how you can take some of your teammates, pull all y' all together. Hi, my name is Kevin Wittek. I'm a software engineer at Atomic Jar and a maintainer of the Test Containers open Source library. And I'm coming to you here from Istanbul. Behind me you can see the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. Very nice location in Istanbul. And I want to invite you all to the Test Automation conference in February. It will be from 7 to 11 of February and best to join today and there you will be able to among Others here my session where I will talk about test containers and how you can write better integration test and test automation using the Test Containers Library. And while I was here in Istanbul I discovered this thing and it's called a Turkish Delight, but people in Istanbul call it Locum and if you look at it it looks a little bit like a container, maybe like a test container. Hello everyone, I'm George Okuru. I'm a speaker at the Test Automation Guild event that is scheduled between February 7th and 11th of this year. I'll be delivering a presentation around cloud transmission testing and I'll be covering the best practices associated with accelerating the speed of both functional testing as well as non functional testing during this session. So I would love to have you all for this event and it'll be great if you can actually register and book your seat. Have a great day. Thank you. Hi, my name is Shane Evans and I'm one of the co founders at Game Driver Incorporated, coming to you today from Virtual Reality. I'm here to invite you to our upcoming talk at the Automation Guild Conference in February where I'll be joined by Ethan Fisher from InContext Solutions in Chicago. Ethan's going to share with us some of his experience as a veteran VR developer in bringing immersive experiences to the enterprise. We've all heard of the Metaverse in the news lately, but do we understand the impact that it's going to have on our day to day lives and the complexities of testing such an immersive experience? Ethan's going to give us some of their lessons learned so that hopefully you can apply that to your journey. It's going to be an exciting conversation and we hope to see you there. Besides speaker sessions, we're also going to have Ask Us Anything roundtables featuring a bunch of awesome experts in our industry. So we're going to have a roundtable on the journey to Quality engineering. Ask us anything about quality in engineering. We're also going to have a roundtable on Ask us anything about AI and automation testing. And we're also going to close the event with a closing roundtable on Ask us anything about succeeding with end to end test automation. Which really is what the theme of this whole event is, Succeeding with end to end automation testing. So it's not just functional automation, it's every type of activity you can do to help accelerate your delivery of software with better quality. That's what we're going to cover and that's what you learn at the Shares event. Also, all sessions will have subtitles burned into them and the full transcript of each session will be available to you in the membership site. So this is like a hybrid event. It's an online event, but it also all the recordings of the event will be uploaded to a membership site. So after it's over, if you missed anything, you could see what happened during the live sessions and review any time for any of the speakers. You can also download their sessions locally, keep them forever. You can also submit questions for Live Q and A if you're not available for Live Q and A. So you get value from this before, during and long after the event is over. So this was just a small sample of the type of sessions you're going to get at this year's Automation Guild.
