Podcast interview (recorded June 1, 2022) in which Guy Kawasaki interviews Dr. Jennifer Kerns (OB-GYN, UCSF associate professor and director of Complex Family Planning Fellowship) about the impact of overturning Roe v. Wade. Key points: abortion is common (about 1 in 3–4 people aged 15–44 will have an abortion); over 90% of abortions occur at ≤13 weeks; so-called six-week/"heartbeat" bans are strategically restrictive (six weeks counted from last menstrual period, effectively ~4 weeks of embryonic development) and would prevent timely care; third-trimester abortions are very rare and typically for severe fetal or maternal complications; restrictions will increase maternal morbidity/mortality, force people to self-manage or travel, and disproportionately harm people with fewer resources; estimates cited: ~300,000 people in states that will ban abortion may need care, only ~100,000 can realistically travel for it; Turnaway Study evidence shows being denied abortion increases physical-health problems, poverty, and harms existing children, while abortion does not cause long-term mental-health problems; contraception, emergency contraception, IVF embryos, and privacy (period-tracking, phone data) are also at risk. The guest emphasizes storytelling, voting, advocacy, and donations as responses.

Questions this episode answers

About 1 in every 3 or 4 people aged 15–44.

Over 90%.

About 300,000 people are in states where abortion will become illegal; an estimated ~100,000 of those will be able to travel to access abortion.

Six weeks is counted from the last menstrual period (LMP); conception typically occurs ~2 weeks after LMP, so embryonic development has usually proceeded ~4 weeks.

The Turnaway Study (conducted at UCSF).
