Hadar Shemesh (Accents Way) explains why non-native name pronunciations often fail in English and recommends converting native name sounds into American-approximate sounds to make introductions clearer and reduce misspelling/mispronunciation. She gives a Starbucks anecdote to illustrate the difficulty listeners have mapping unfamiliar sounds, and announces a mini training: viewers should send a short video saying their name once in their native tongue and once in English. Submissions are accepted until November 10, 2017 (Friday); contact via video upload link, blog, or messages on Facebook (Accentsway) and Instagram (Accentsway by Hadar).

Hey, it's Hadar. And this is the accent's way. And today I'm gonna teach you how to say your name. It's the first thing you say when you introduce yourself. It's the way people acknowledge you by. It's the one word you hear the most since day one. That's how your parents named you or you named yourself. And let's agree that there's only one way to say your name. The way it's pronounced in your native tongue, with the sounds that you're born into, with the sounds that were spoken by your family around you. But let me tell you this. If I were to walk into Starbucks and order a tall cappuccino, and then the person at the counter would say, what's your name, ma'? Am? And I'd say adar, because that's how you say my name in my native tongue, what do you think would happen? Do you really think they'd get my name right or spell it right? Uh, I don't think so. You know why? Because it's really difficult for them to understand the sounds that I'm making and to analyze them as American sounds. They would never get the sound that I'm making at the end of my name and think that it's an R. They'll probably call me Adele, a Duh, or Joanna, I don't know, you know, Starbucks. But what I'm trying to say is I need to help them understand what my name is by turning the sounds into American sounds. Now, I may not be loyal to the way I truly pronounce my name, but. But I don't want to shoot myself in the foot. I don't want people asking me, what's your name again? Misspelling it or mispronouncing it, or all of the above. Right? I want it to be as simple and clear as possible so I won't deal with my name and how to say it and make other people uncomfortable because they can't remember my name. So the best way to do it is by turning the native sounds into American sounds. And it's not because they're stupid or they're not willing to really understand how to say your name. It's really hard to analyze new sounds the first moment you're meeting someone. Think about it. There's all this information that you have to remember once you meet someone new. So also, trying to understand or detecting new sounds that don't exist in your language is almost impossible. So what I decided to do is make a mini training for you to help you understand how to say your name English. But for that I need your help. Listen up. What I want you to do is send me a short video of yourself saying your name once in your native tongue and once in English. And then what I'm going to do is I'm going to use those videos and I'm going to feature them in my next video and explain how to turn those sounds into English and what you should think about when you want to say your name in English. Okay? So it's not just going to be specifically about those names, although examples are always great and really help us out with understanding. But also I'm going to show you the way I look at it, what I focus on when I'm trying to analyze a word or analyze a name and say it in English. So again, you have until November 10th, it's a Friday, 2017, to submit your video to be able to be featured in my training and to have me talk about your name. And, and if you have a funny story that is related to your name or how you say your name in English, also let me know in the comments below. So maybe I can feature that as well. Alright, that's it. If it's still not clear, you'll find all the information in my blog and right below this video. And of course, if you have any questions, write a comment below the video or send me a message on Facebook Accentsway or Instagram Accentsway by Hadar I always read all your comments and messages. Even if I don't respond, know that I read every single comment. So don't be afraid to contact me. All right? I'm super excited about it. I think it's going to be very, very helpful. I mean, what can be more helpful than knowing how to say your name, right? So let's see. Looking forward to seeing your videos. Have a great week and I'll see you next week in the next video. Bye.
