Hadar Shemesh argues that to improve speaking fluency you should stop prioritising learning new (passive) words and instead activate words you already know but don’t use. She explains the ‘vocabulary circle’ metaphor (large passive outer circle vs smaller active inner circle), recounts a personal teaching anecdote, and gives a step-by-step practice routine: keep an accessible list of underused known words, practise pronunciation and sentences daily (one word/day), and commit to using them in speech.
