Beyond Clinical Work: What’s Really Causing Provider Burnout?

In this segment, Hallie Bulkin explains that provider burnout often stems from factors beyond direct clinical duties. She highlights how dysregulated families and children create emotional spillover that leaves providers trying to manage treatment amid heightened stress. Communication breakdowns and unclear expectations further exacerbate tension, as providers are often left to carry the full emotional weight without adequate dialogue. Additionally, the extra collaborative work with other professionals—frequently performed outside regular work hours—adds to the burden, contributing to burnout in varied and subtle ways.

  1. When you have families that are dysregulated and kids that are dysregulated, I know we were talking before we hit record about this, the parent becomes dysregulated or vice versa. Like everything impacts everything else. And I think that what I've seen is a lot of providers who are then left to try and manage treatment with these burnt out families. And there's emotions, there's communication struggles sometimes, there's unmet expectations 'cause nobody even asked what the expectations were to begin with. And I just think there's so much burnout that starts right there. It's not even always the clinical work itself. It definitely can be, but it's the weight of trying to like carry the entire experience without even— without that communication or enough communication or even collaboration. And then there's the burnout that comes from being the collaborator with all the other professionals, because like we were talking about, like you're doing it on your own time outside of, you know, your work hours or outside of treating the patients. And anyways, I've just seen burnout happen in so many different ways, shapes, and forms.
