Hamel Husain and a colleague discuss companies using AI to write employee performance reviews. Hamel recalls a manager reading his review verbatim from a paper without adding anything personal, which felt like the company didn't care enough to write it themselves.
I was just in a situation where I was— became aware of a large company that was using AI to generate essentially performance evaluations for employees. I feel really protective about performance evaluations because I feel they're personal.
I was at a big tech company. My manager did a performance review, called me to the room, and just read off like verbatim from a piece of paper. And the performance review has like peer reviews and just read them to me. I was so jarred by it because it felt so impersonal because now you don't You don't even have a human. You just have like, hey, I'll put it through a machine. Cause I could care less. Sometimes if you use AI, you are signaling, I couldn't be bothered to write this, but you know, you should read it.
I'm important. Your time is not.
You can smell when you overuse it, right? When I smell it, you'll just, one reaction is like, just stop reading. It's where people get lost somehow.
