Local 10's Todd Tongan is live with this heartwarming story. Hi, Todd.
Yeah, this one has a happy ending. Sharon Blackett has been in and out of the hospital since last June, recuperating from this horrific car accident. Today she felt good enough to come here to Davie fire Rescue Station 104 and thank the people who saved her.
Sharon Blackett was too choked up to speak when she met the first responders that saved her life.
Thank you so much.
Sharon's not only lucky to be able to walk, she's lucky to be alive.
A lot of people have told me, doctors included, that.
It'S kind of a miracle.
On June 17, Father's Day, Sharon and her boyfriend Alex Martinez were driving home from the Keys when they got into a life threatening accident. That's when Davie fire Rescue Station 104 got the call.
Along with her being trapped in the vehicle, she was also suffering from a life threatening bleeding condition.
They ended up hitting the turnpike guardrail head on.
I looked down and I saw my bone sticking up.
Her boyfriend spent six years in the Coast Guard as an ems. So he applied a temporary tourniquet using his T shirt. But then an FHP trooper arrived and he had training and a kit that.
Was instrumental in saving Ms. Blackhead's life.
I received the training about two weeks prior.
I would have bled out because I did have a severed femoral artery.
So that's the femur fracture you're seeing on the left.
Sharon has had four surgeries on her leg.
She's able to walk with a cane.
And doctors at Memorial Regional's trauma center.
Deserve a great deal of credit. They say they're glad they had the opportunity.
We absolutely 100% agree that the stop the bleed kit saved her life. These wonderful people went above and beyond. I can't thank them enough.
Sharon says between her rehab sessions she is happy to be a spokesperson for Stop the Bleach. She thinks it'll save other lives as well.
