BEFAST Exam

Now let's talk about the BFAST exam. The BFAST has been gaining traction over the Cincinnati Stroke Scale due to its increased sensitivity in detecting strokes, particularly in identifying posterior circulation strokes. By incorporating two additional assessments, balance and eyes, the BFAS exam allows us to better identify stroke symptoms that might have been missed using the Cincinnati Stroke Scale. This ultimately leads to quicker identification and treatment of stroke patients, reducing the risk of long term damage and improving patient outcomes. By implementing the BFAST exam in our EMS protocol, we we aim to enhance the overall effectiveness of our emergency stroke response. What does BFAST stand for? Balance, eyes, face, arm and speech and time, representing the six key indicators of a potential stroke. This comprehensive approach not only helps paramedics identify strokes with greater accuracy, but also reinforces the importance of timely intervention. The sooner a stroke is identified, the faster the patient can receive appropriate care, which is crucial for minimizing the impact of the stroke and maximizing chances of a full recovery. As we transition to the BFAST exam, we are taking a significant step toward improving the quality of care provided to our stroke patients and ultimately saving more lives. There's one last important point about the if a patient presents with any balance or eye related symptoms, the beginning, you can now call a stroke alert for up to 48 hours after the onset of these symptoms. This extended window of opportunity is crucial as it enables a rapid activation of necessary resources and facilitates timely intervention even in cases where symptoms might have initially been less apparent. By adopting the BFAST exam, we are empowering our personnel to make informed decisions and provide the best possible care to stroke patients, ultimately improving patient outcomes and potentially saving more lives.
