Steve Campana shows how to secure a patient's arm after placing an EZ IO in the upper arm bone. You must immobilize it with a sling and swath for conscious patients or strap the hand to the stretcher for unconscious ones, or the catheter will bend and shear. Never lift the patient by that arm.

Hi there. Steve Campana, EMS 23 on the A shift with your safety tip for the day. When we're using the EZ IO in the proxima humerus, we have to remember that the arm that the catheter is in must be restrained. Whether our patient is conscious or unconscious, we have to make sure that that arm doesn't lift off the patient. As you can see here in our conscious patient, we're using a sling and swath. In the unconscious patient, you could restrain the hand or the wrist to the backboard, scoop stretcher or just to the stretcher. What we never want to do is do an extremity lift on a patient that has the Ezio in the proximal humerus. The potential for catheter shear and bending is very high when we start to move that arm around. And what we're seeing is difficulty in removal of the Ezio at the hospitals after we've dropped the patient off. So let's make sure that when we're deploying the Ezio into the proximal humerus, we make sure that we restrain that arm that that catheter is in. Thank you.
