Gaston County EMS received 130 State of the art kits from a state grant to help them better treat children during medical emergencies.
NBC Charlotte's Brandon Goldner explains how these kits help first responders save seconds to save a life.
A nightmare for any parent. Medical emergency Patient's unconscious, your child has a medical emergency. Gaston county paramedic Travis Adams says any emergency involving a child adds pressure to first responders.
It's automatically going to get your heart rate up.
But paramedics here are now better equipped than ever to take care of your child thanks to a State grant donating 130 medical resuscitation kits customized exclusively for children. Adams says pediatric emergencies have unique challenges. They don't happen that often, but when they do, paramedics have to make complex mathematical calculations on the fly to make sure they're selecting the proper equipment and giving the right drug dosages.
Anytime we're doing math, there's room for error.
These donated hand heavy pediatric bags eliminate that air. Doing the math for the paramedics and providing them medical supplies designed specifically for children. About 160 paramedics are undergoing training right now to use them.
The more resources that we can give our paramedics to help them do their job quicker and safer is really our goal with the system.
Gaston County EMS plans to start using these kits for real emergencies in May. Reporting in Gastonia, I'm Brandon Goldner, NBC Charlotte.
