Are you playing to win?

Jesse Ecker asks if you're playing to win with money or just trying not to lose. Work backwards from specific long-term goals into yearly benchmarks. Use separate accounts for necessities, investing, security, and play. Model what successful people do, like Warren Buffett holding cash when markets are uncertain.

Hey, it's Jesse Ecker here and I got a really important question for you today. Are you with your personal finances, when it comes to your financial success, are you playing the money game to win the money game to actually win it, or here's the question, are you playing not to lose? It's a really great question, right? Are you playing the money game to win the money game to actually win it, or are you playing not to lose? Well, determining what you are doing, whether you're playing to win or not to lose, is really going to give us a good insight into if you're going to actually succeed financially or just get by financially. Or maybe not get by at all financially. Why? Because where attention goes, energy flows and results show. Let me say that one more time. Where attention goes, energy flows and results show. So if you're playing the money game to win, then your attention, your energy and your results are going to go into to winning the money game. If your attention is to not lose, well, guess what, your attention, your energy and your results are going to make sure that you're not losing, but you're also not winning. Right? So today I'm going to share three principles to help you make an instant shift to making sure that you are playing the money game to win and not playing to not lose. Okay? So principle number one, really important is to know your objective. We love to always make sure that we know what we're doing. If you don't know what you're going to do or what you want, you're not going to get what you want. So understanding your objective of what you want with your money is really important. If you're just trying to pay the bills, guess what, you're just going to pay the bills. If you are trying to just become comfortable, guess what, you're just going to be comfortable. If you're trying to get rich, then there's a better chance of you getting rich, right? So knowing your objective, having those objectives clear and specific so that you know exactly what you need to do to achieve those objectives is going to make sure that you are playing to win, not to lose. So an objective really actionably intangible, how you're going to achieve your objective is know your objective long term and then work yourself backwards. What are the benchmarks, milestones that we're going to know that are going to help me keep on track to make sure that I know that I'm on the right track going towards my objective? And then what are the actions that are going to help me hit my Benchmark or my milestones to make sure that I'm on track. Right, so work backwards. You just have the big goal. You start to make smaller chunks so that you can make smaller actions so that you can make that goal become a reality. So that's number one. Number two, manage your money. We talk about this amazing money management system that T. Harv Eker came up with, the JAR system. And the reason why managing your money is so massive when it comes to the money mindset and winning the money game is because when it comes down to managing your money, you have specific accounts or jars, metaphorically to do specific things with your money. So if security and security is a big value for you, if money brings you security, I'm not going to take that away from you. You have a specific account for that security for you to be able to hoard your money if you really want to. That account is there for you to be able to feel good about that. But it also doesn't take you out of the offense of making sure that you are at least having an account for one is for financial freedom. So it's your investing accounts and make sure that you're progressing forward into actually creating that financial freedom. And the second one is playing, making sure that you are spoiling yourself. You're living that life of, you know, of being able to just do something because you just want to do it, not because like you had to budget for it or something like that. So the plan account is really important for the mindset wise of making sure that you get to experience things just going crazy. Right? That's what the play account. So managing your money actually puts you in a better position to winning the money game because you get to play the offense and you get to play the defense, which is so, so, so important. And the third thing that is really important here is to do what successful people do, do what they've done to get. They are now I get it. You don't maybe know the behind the scenes of like what successful people are actually doing. And that's why we share our own experiences in the millionaire mindset with what we're doing with our community so that we can give you the back, the behind the scenes of what we've done to go from where we were to where we are now. And it's important to know what they're doing so that you can model, learn and study from them. Well, here's the thing. When you are a successful person, that's when you get to take your foot off the gas. Okay? Think of it like this. If you're playing sports, right, you would never start playing defense only if you were not winning the game. The only time that you actually decide to pull your foot off the gas is when you feel like you have won the game or when you want to protect your lead. Right? When you want to protect your lead. But if you have no lead yet, if you have no. If you're not winning yet, why would you be playing defense? So understanding that to get to where you want to go, you need to press forward, you need to play offense, you need to go after the things that you want. You need to think, act, and be like a successful person. So that's just simply looking at the things that you're doing with your money and asking, would a successful person be doing this right now? Now, when it comes to this current time, right now, and what's going on, the pandemic, I'm not saying go and spend all your money and put it into investments and do all these things. This is probably not the best opportunity, best time. It might be a good opportunity. It might not be the best time for you to do that. Why? Well, because there's a lot of uncertainty in the markets. There's a lot of unknowns. No one knows what's going to happen. This can be a very risky time for your money. So it might not be the best time to actually play offense with your money. But what do you think successful people are doing with their money? Well, let's look at Warren Buffett, for example. He just took away all his investments and so he's got about $50 billion worth of cash, probably way more. But I know he sold recently $50 billion worth of his airline stocks anyways. So what is he doing? Well, he took cash so that he can start to look for more opportunities when they present themselves so that he can play offense again. Wow, that's something that we really need to look at. If you're not doing anything with your money, what are you looking for right now as opportunities that you can start to making your money work for you? What opportunities are you going to get into once things start to get back to normal? Once opportunities present themselves to you, once you're able to be a little more confident in your investing strategy or whatever your strategy is for starting and growing your business? It doesn't even matter. Just think about what successful people are doing. So if successful people are not investing right now, what are they doing? Well, you better damn believe that they are scouting lots of different opportunities, waiting for the right time so that they can invest. So maybe their actions are not playing offense specifically to actually invest, but their offense is playing of like, let's make sure that we're ready, we're prepared and we're ready to seize the opportunity once it presents itself. Okay? So in summary, the three things are know your objective and if you know your objective is something that maybe is not playing to win, then become aware of that and change that objective to play to win. Make sure that it's outside your reach, outside your comfort zone so you're progressing and pushing to get there. The second thing that we want to make sure that you're doing is you're managing your money so you can, you know, your money personality. If you're a saver, you feel good about that. You have different positions for your money, different accounts for your money to do different things for you to make sure that you're saving, to make sure you're investing, to make sure that you're playing, to make sure you're taking care of your necessities. You have different accounts for different reasons. Managing your money is number two and three is act, think and be like a successful person. Do what successful people would do. Your best guess, Think about it. Think about what you're doing and ask yourself, would a successful person do this? Would a successful person do this if they want to achieve X? Would a successful person do this if they want to achieve? Why Think about that. All right, so I hope you enjoyed this video. I think it's going to shed a lot of light into what you're personally doing. Take a deep breath, take an examine, be an objective of like what you're thinking, what your habits are, how you deal with your money. And I think you're going to get so much from just knowing what you are currently doing versus where you currently want to go. And if those don't match up with your thinking and your actions, then this is a good opportunity for you to make a change. A good opportunity for you to become aware and make a quick change so that you can achieve the goals and objectives that you want in your life. Thanks again for watching. Hope you enjoyed this video and bye for now.
