Dr. Brian Alman (speaking in a YouTube video) argues that the primary human fear is the fear of intimacy, which causes mixed desires (e.g., wanting one-night stands yet wanting long-term relationships) and self-judgment. He frames these tensions as part of personal development (growth metaphor: roots/branches) and advises celebrating life while being honest about readiness for deeper connection. He emphasizes that at the end of life people mainly want to heal and resolve relationships—making relationships the central priority.

The number one fear, let it be known today, is the fear of intimacy. That's really what it is. And when you're out and you're doing the one night stands, for example, and somebody really wants more and you do, you don't. You have all these mixed feelings. You're simply stuck in committee. You don't know what you want. You want to be close, but you don't. You want a one night stand, but you really want a long term relationship. You're just all over the map. That's okay. Everybody's a process in development. Everybody's growing as a person. Like a tree grows, branches grow, the roots grow. So do we. So if that's where you are, have a great time, celebrate your life. Make sure the sex is fantastic, make sure you're having a great time with each other. In fine. Then when you're ready to move out of that community, out of all those mixed feelings, out of your own self judgment and self criticism, and you're really ready to go deep, the person that you're really wanting, they will show up. As long as you know how to do that with yourself, you will make that connection with somebody. That's where everybody wants to go anyway. Number one thing in life, I hear it all the time, is relationship relationships. So when I'm working with people at their end of their lives, days, weeks, months left, they only want to solve and heal their relationships. That's the number one issue. Sam.
